I will play thread optimist tonight. Yes, sucks that Price is at least a bit injured. But we are getting to stretch out Brewer and find out how helpful he can be going forward. So far so good. If we can get the offense going this would be a sweet game to win.

Everytime I listen to Smoltz I genuinely ask myself "Does this guy even likes baseball"?

Why is Betts taking meat pitches and feast on crap afterwards?

Maybe Price should stop playing GM and worrying about the team's farm system and pay more attention to his own health. The $30 mil boy quits after 3 batters because he doesn't feel well. OMG.

Well earned loss.
Next time they need to stop sucking with RISP.

a wheels slowly coming off the car kind of game, I guess. two runs to this team with their pen is a big hill to climb...but not impossible.

The way they're going tonight I think they're going to lose another game and a half in the standings and will find themselves 7.5 games out of first, and the team they trail will eventually get their best players back healthy at some point. That's a tough hill to climb.
Meanwhile if they do lose this game and they have to stop being so awful with runners on, they'll face Verlander tomorrow trying not to get swept and fall to 1-5 against Houston.

In baseball, things do even out (in life as well). Last year so much went right. This year various things are going not quite the way we hoped to...the team is fighting through it, and I think they will be in the playoffs after a pretty interesting, pretty challenging season. My view, anyway. Moods will certainly fluctuate game to game (we are all intense fans - reason these threads are pretty meaningless to read after the fact - they are raw emotion). But...it's a long season, we are over .500, have lots of talent. Pretty lucky in that respect, methinks (we, as Red Sox fans). 67, this was one of the best posts I've ever read in a game thread. The Sox will play better than they're playing now overall. I'm pretty sure of that. They'll be better than 85-77 or whatever their record suggests. The league doesn't have too many great teams beyond the top ones so grabbing one of those two wild card spots is highly doable if they don't catch the Yankees, (and you have to be an absolute homer not to acknowledge the real possibility that the Yankees will continue to play reasonably well going forward making it extremely difficult for the Sox to catch them.) At the end of the day if you don't win the division it just means that you need to win 12 games rather than 11 and if you can't win that first one, then what difference does it make? But if they do, then they're on pretty much on even footing with the other teams, and then it comes down to how well they play. What strikes me about this team is the "IT" factor. It's funny because I saw it last year (in spades) with the Red Sox but I ignored it because it was preposterous to me that the Red Sox seemed to win no matter what last year. They just found ways. This year's team doesn't seem to have the "IT" factor. That thing that you can feel but can't really measure or explain does matter. They just found ways to get clutch hit after clutch 2 out hit to demoralize the Astros. Their defense made amazing plays at the most important times. Guys came through when it mattered the most. They just found ways to win. Wasn't hearing excuses about 400 foot outs and 325 pop HRs for the other team. It didn't matter because the Sox found a way to win no matter what. They just had IT. If they didn't that loss in Game 3 of the World Series should have sunk them, but it didn't. They had IT. They had a way to overcome. The Dodgers didn't have IT. Once they melted in Game 4, they barely even showed up for Game 5. They were a beaten team. Conversely, the Sox used Game 3 as fuel - which is a huge credit to Cora. I do have concern that the Yankees have IT this year. There's no way they should be playing this well after losing their guys that they did. I think the Astros do have more talent and should win this year - hell they should have won last year, but we'll see. Maybe the Red Sox can catch fire like they did in 2004 when it mattered the absolute most. They have the talent to do so, so we'll see. It won't be easy. That 2004 team couldn't catch the Yanks in the division either. They came close but were too far out. Ultimately it didn't matter.
