Not reading anywhere that he's in critical condition, so here's hoping. Favorite player of any sport. Love the guy.

Abraham saying it was in the leg. Ugh my first thought is Sean Taylor’s life getting taken by a robbery attempt and being shot in the leg. Prayers up!

This is even worse. Not the leg, but the lower back and exiting through his stomach.
From Marly Rivera at ESPN:
Marly Rivera Verified account @marlyriveraespn Follow Follow @marlyriveraespn More I just spoke to @dsoldevila who is at the clinic where David Ortiz is currently being treated. Dionisio said me that the attending doctor told him that David was shot in the lower back and the bullet went through and through; he’s currently in surgery.

Damn...that's serious, I feel so sick right now. That man has provided so many happy moments in my life - basically fulfilled childhood dreams that I never though could be fulfilled. And he is an amazing person, somebody I have always somehow some way hope to meet, just to shake his hand and say thank you from the bottom of my heart.

If he's talking to the docs, that's a good sign, isn't it? We probably won't know anything until morning.

Report: David Ortiz shot, hospitalized in Dominican Republic on Sunday Yahoo Sports Ryan Young,Yahoo Sports 1 hour 3 minutes ago
Former Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz was shot in the Dominican Republic, his father told ESPN on Sunday night.
Per the report, Ortiz was shot in a burglary at a the Dial Bar and Lounge in Santo Domingo, and transported to a local hospital. A suspect has been arrested, according to Dominican journalist Jose Monegro.
Ortiz was shot in the lower back, and the bullet exited through his stomach, according to ESPN. The 43-year-old underwent surgery, and reportedly told the emergency room doctor: “Please don’t let me die, I’m a good man.”
According to Dominican journalist Dionisio Soldevilla, Ortiz is currently in stable condition.
“They called me to tell me that David is injured and that they took him to a medical center, but they did not tell me how he is or exactly where he was transferred,” Ortiz’s father, Leo, told ESPN. “At the moment, everything is confusing. I'm trying to find out where they took my son.”
Ortiz, who was born in Santo Domingo, played in the MLB for 20 seasons, most notably for the Red Sox. The 10-time All-Star led Boston to three World Series titles in 2004, 2007 and in 2013 before he retired after the 2016 season.

Have to be skeptical of any information, good or bad, that we get, I think.
Fuck, man, this feels like family. Let's hope our frantic worry gives way to relief, not to unbearable grief.

Stable condition. They have the video (available on twitter but I won't post it here) and the perp is in custody (custody photos also on twitter).

As Ray mentions, there is video of the incident on Twitter. I am going to ask that nobody post it here. If anyone wants to see it (I have), you can find it pretty easily on Twitter.
For those who'd prefer not to see it - the guy basically walks up behind Ortiz and shoots him in the back. It's clearly not a robbery attempt, as first reported.

What shocking, horrible, news. The report that he is in stable condition is slightly encouraging though. I have my fingers crossed that he can pull through.
