Stable condition. They have the video (available on twitter but I won't post it here) and the perp is in custody (custody photos also on twitter). I don't use twitter. Video of what exactly? Hope they give the shooter the god damn death penalty. Nightclub or restaurant surveillance video. The shooter is bloody but not bloody enough, he's still conscious.

Big Papi is an icon. I’m glad to hear the doctor’s have said he’s out of danger and in stable condition. Next step is administering justice to the cowardly piece of trash that shot him in the back. Not a chance that was a robbery. As much as it sucks fo say, Ortiz is lucky to be alive.

If it's not a robbery, perhaps it's a stalker type or somebody looking for their 15 minutes of fame even if it's for being a vile disgusting shell of a human being. I hope this piece of crap gets his "justice" in a jail cell - hope the other inmates beat the crap out of him or worse. I'd root for the death penalty but I don't know that this will be an option.

Things starting to trickle out though who knows, it might not be accurate. Gunshots that go through the abdomen can be tricky. You may not die due to the wound but from infection, hurting a vital organ.

If the guy is just some mentally ill dude, I wouldn't be surprised to hear Papi say he's praying for the guy and hopes he beats his demons. That's Papi.

You may not die due to the wound but from infection, hurting a vital organ. Those are my concerns currently. Until I hear he is out of danger I won't relax. Stable condition can deteriorate very quickly. Best case scenario is the bullet went through relatively clean and missed all of the major organs. Fingers continue to be crossed...

Jesus f-ing Christ dude. Who the f*ck would shoot Ortiz?
My god, stay with us big guy. All I'll be thinking about is you until you're okay.
Unfortunately, DR is a dangerous place in some parts. I hope Ortiz stays in the US more if he pulls through this.

This is horrible. I do not typically wish ill will to anyone nor do I celebrate violence visited upon those who vomit crimes, but if this a-hole gets beaten to death tonight, I may be a little bit happy. David Ortiz is an icon not only for the city of Boston, but for an an entire nation.
His good work and kindness outweigh his significant career accomplishments and the POS that did this is garbage. I am not religious but I would pray to any deity for David's health & safety.

They basically will. This guy will last 3 months at most in jail in the DR. Ortiz is idolized by everyone in the DR, even criminals. This guy will not last long.

Ortiz is idolized by everyone in the DR, even criminals. This guy will not last long. Honestly, I abhor violence, but in this case....I would think Ortiz is idolized by criminals and prison guards alike. This piece of trash hopefully will get what he has coming to him. I'm thankful that Ortiz will apparently make a full recovery. This night brought back the awful memories I have of the death of John Lennon. I was very young, but I was old enough to be aware of him and his music (1980 was a big year for me learning about baseball and the Red Sox - and music, too. I remember his double fantasy album and enjoyed that music). I remember watching MNF and I was up kind of late for my age, and hearing the news. I was too young to get the full impact. But as I've gotten older and learned more and was horrified by it, I'm thankful that Ortiz will be ok (still praying). In Lennon's case, Mark David Chapman, a deranged fan of Lennon, stalked him, and actually met him and was the recipient of kindness by Lennon, but nonetheless, he ambushed him and shot him in the back - and killed him. Here, it sounds like this POS got behind him and ambushed him, shooting him in the back, too. I'm glad the similarities will end there. I guess through time we'll learn of the motive. It certainly wasn't robbery. The speculation will run rampant until we know? Was he insane? Was he seeking his 15 minutes of fame? Did he see Ortiz much differently than the rest of the world sees him? I guess we'll learn soon enough and when we do we still won't understand.

Yeah the dude looked like he attempted murdering Ortiz. I mean, that's what the video showed. There was no hold up for a robbery. It was a no hesitation shot to the back before Ortiz knew what happened.
Didn't think I loved Ortiz this much though. I cried for like 15 minutes tonight, and that never happens.
We almost lost a legend, but the legend of Ortiz will never die. Can't wait until he's back in Boston, probably with a microphone, and making everyone smile again.

Especially when this was the guy that changed your baseball life as a kid. All I knew was losing and frustration before Ortiz came. He turned that into joy, expectations, fulfillment. This dude was a huge part of all of our lives, and thankfully will still be for it sounds like a long time. He'll be doing his thing with Arod joking around come playoff time, which I look forward to watching postgames every playoff series.

big Papi was bigger than life and to hear that some low life would try to take his life is an abomination. I pray for Papi's recovery and have nothing but revulsion to a low life trying to gain his 10 seconds of fame. I hope he has his fame in prison (if he survives it. I would like to know if there is a way to send Papi get well wishes through the Red Sox or this site. I feel miserable about this incident.
