I’ve seen this blowpen blow more leads after 6 innings than I can count. If you wanna blame the starters for not going deeper into ball games, than we need to invest in a bartolo colon innings eater. You seem to have missed the point. The bullpen pitched 6.1,4and now 7 innings. Theyve pitched 7+ innings today and allowed 1 run. I guess in your mind it would have to have no runs in 7 + in order to not be "awful, awful." Yup. Short starts put so much pressure on the pen. Today, once again early offensive squanders put us where we are. Been a tough season to get all parts of this team working at once. As Cora says many times, they have been consistently inconsistent

Having Chris Owings, literal definition of a below replacement player, bat leadoff, is a microcosm both of this mediocre season and DD's fringe roster management failures. I've only seen the last at bat, but I like his swing...I'd like to give him a chance.

Makes as much sense as your obsession on my posts. I'm a sucker for circular logic. It got us all a week reprieve, I'll take the win. I clearly explained everything and made my point clear. There was nothing weak here. Nothing condescending. You got nothing.

Weber, the go-to guy following your "closer" at home. This team is embarrassing.

I'm a fan of never seeing Weber again after this year, Velazquez too.

The bullpen has been amazing today. If we lose its on Cashner and the offense once again leaving the bases loaded. And Cora for batting Owings leadoff and pinch running Mookie into that awful out rather than getting him an at-bat. Cora has been absolutely mediocre at his job this season.

Well he is still only 27...He reached the majors at 21. He has very good minor league stats and delivered .242 while up and down in the majors. As for where he hits in the order, no matter what, he will likely hit better than JBJ. Based on his 40+ games at Pawtucket hitting .325 plus 11 dongs makes him ok hitting first one game for me. It's not as tho he's a wide eye rookie overwhelmed by his first trip to the Bigs.

Watching the team come out so flat so often this season and lose these kind of games just makes me sad.
0-3 RISP, 9 LOB.

Another bad loss. No energy. No miracles. No call ups. None. Nada.
Play more JBJ, Leon, Nunez, Weber, Thornburg, Josh Smith, Colten Brewer. the dream is dead.

This bullpen is running on fumes. Our starters have not gotten the job done, too many innings on the bullpen.

I actually wasn’t critiquing the team. I was saying the better draft pick could have netted the Red Sox a really good player. My dummy self actually liked the Trey Ball pick. At the time I was all about the go big or go home with that high of a pick.

Sale leads MLB in K/9 after a season of injury, mishandling the injury, overuse, an incredibly long post season and next to no spring training. You'd think on a team where Koji recently dominated with an 88 mph fastball and Joe Kelly couldn't strike anyone out with a 102 mph fastball, that fans would understand that fastball velocity is nowhere near the most important factor in pitching ability. And still, Chris Sale hit 98 last night. Sale's arm is probably halfway to home plate by the time he releases the ball. He also has a very high spin rate. He can still strike out tons of people even if he's throwing 90. Sale also has let up the most home run per 9 for his career. Indicative of his fastball decline imo. As for Koji, we got a prime Koji. This will probably not be a prime Sale at 31 years of age next year imo. And I think it's safe to say guys with high velocity usually get more strikeouts -- if you want to believe he will have terrific strikeout numbers and sustainable high numbers with a declining fastball with minimal home runs allowed - okay but I don't think so. As for JKelly - he showed his fastball was not very effective overall for his carer but Sale has. So it is evident that the fastball was also a big part of Sale's success. His fastball was considered a "plus" fastball? Or "plus plus?" whatever. So if it declines by dropping a level then all of a sudden I'm supposed to believe it doesn't matter beucase "Koji" didn't need one? Nah. Different pitchers different styles. DIfferent circumstances facing number of batters etc. Yet one thing we know is Sale's numbers this year have declined in particular has f/b in Boston -the prior year he is hurt- and then we see what happens - this year turns into among the worst or 2nd worst of his career. ANd if we don;t look at career just look at this year vs the other two in Boston he has not been near as good. FIP of 3.34 vs 1.98 and 2.45. As far as spin rate -- yeah I see- but it is also scary that if he has a high spin rate - he still is performing among the worst of his career - so then what significance is it vs fastball decline specifically for Sale? Further- heck an article last year in Fangraphs (Link below) - Rich Hill suggested "David Wells" could have a good spin rate if he pitched today on his curve today yet we know he'd get crushed just as eventually Koji eventually did. Fastballs matter for the most part. I don't expect Sale to get crushed but just am more concerned that we could've gone after Cole instead. Further Rich Hill suggests spin rate performs better with age so if we go by that then what happened to Koji after his super year with SOx? Just like nearly all pitchers we see a decline in fastball. Fastball decline is a problem. not every pitcher can recover. With Sale's age combined with his injury issues and if his spin rate has been real good now-- why shouldn't I be scared he doesn't similarily get hit with a high number of home runs again next year? blogs.fangraphs.com/rich-hill-has-a-theory-about-spin-and-aging/Home runs are not a sign of aging. Whiff rate is a much better indicator, which Sale is still elite at. If Sale's HR/FB% regresses at all, he's the same damn pitcher he's always been.
