I see this off-season as a test of CB's ability to put together a competitive team within some tight financial parameters. It would be unwise to go over the $210M LT threshold. I expect the slowest FA market in history with a lot of decent players (particulary RPs) unsigned in Feb. and forced to take short-term, low-money deals. Billions of dollars in lost revenue and uncertainty about next year's revenues will have a dramatic impact on any industry. That will play to CB's advantage because I think he has a keen eye for low-priced talent. FG has us ( www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource/payroll/red-sox) the 2021 payroll at $138M, not counting arb eligibles. I'll assume that E-Rod gets a raise from $8.3M to ~$11M, putting the projected payroll at $149M. I'd like to see them: - Finish the Wil Myers trade with SD. According to reports, this was going to add about $3M in AAV. Let's snag a CB pick along with Luis Campuasano. This is high on my priorities list. Tax hit: $3M.
- Move JDM. Eating money would suck but that's where his bad season has put us. Offer him around with a $10M 2021 subsidy. If he bounces back at all, the acquiring team won't have to worry about his 2022 salary. He'll opt out. Tax savings: $10M.
- Chase T. Bauer, who has said he wants short-term contracts. Does 2 year/$40M do it? In this catastrophic economic environment, it might. Tax hit: $20M.
- Buy out X's options by adding $5M/year to his deal and sign RD long-term at an AAV of ~$16. Tax hit: $21M.
- Sign JBJ or a player of similar value to play CF. Tax hit: $6M.
- Non-tender Barnes, Paraza, Brasier and other assorted arb eligibles.
- That leaves a payroll of about $189M, giving CB about $12M to sign BP arms and bench guys and have enough left for deadline acquisitions. The bench would be important, as I am going without a dedicated DH. We'd need a mix of platoon bats on the bench to fill that role. If they are willing to go over the LT threshold (as I said, I am not), they could chase Marcell Ozuna.
Lineup: 1B - B-Bombs 2B - Arroyo. (Have to go cheap here.) SS - X 3B - A slimmed-down RD LF- Beni CF - JBJ RF - Verdugo C - Vaz DH - Myers and an undervalued guy or two whom CB likes. Fourth OFer - Myers.
Rotation: Bauer Eo Perez Houck, Pivetta, Darwinzon, E-Rod (not counting on him, as Covid remains mysterious), maybe even Seabold, Sale (starting in June), openers, and guys we haven't heard of yet would get starts in the fourth and fifth slots.
It's not a sure-fire contender, but it's the best I got in what I see as a bridge year. Things will get better as the (Pedroia after 2021), Price (after 2022) and Eo (after 2022) contracts expire and we start to get real impact from the farm CB is building.

I’ve thought of that JD scenario as well, but my question is what team in this market would pay 10 mil for a player that just hit .200? We may be hoping he just rebounds for us next year.

I’d bet on JD Martinez rebounding as our DH more than Will Myers having a second consecutive, healthy season. Also, not sure San Diego is as eager to add a top prospect to simply take him given his season and one less year on his deal remaining this offseason. I think they’d like to deal him but not sure a top prospect is needed. Bullpen arms are volatile and we don’t have much back there...Brasier or Barnes could be effective for us in 2021 and help us win games or get us something decent for the someone else’s playoff push.

Well that seems completely disanalogous. JBJ has averaged about 2 WAR throughout his career, if you don't count his career year in 2016. He's provided surplus value to the team every season of his career. Arbitration has treated him kindly, but if he can be signed at $5-7million/year on a relatively short deal that's very good value. So you think jbj will take half of what he was suppose to make this season for a one year deal? All I have ever heard was hes looking for a deal similar to kiermaier. I'm sure he'd love a deal like that but that doesn't mean he's gonna get one. Kiermaier was coming off back-to-back 4 fWAR seasons when he signed it, which Bradley hasn't come close to since 2016. And then there's the bleak financial situation in baseball. That fact, too, might make him inclined to sign a shorter contract, maybe even a one-year deal.

I'm not looking to acquire Myers for his production - though he'll probably be a bargain at $3M AAV. I want to acquire a high-end prospect. CB did a good job at the deadline of adding guys in the 11 to 20 range. (I'm assuming Wallace will be at about 18 or 19 in the SP rankings.) Campuasano would be more impactful. To your point about the Pads' intentions, we have no idea. But again, I don't think there's any overstating the impact of the economic blood bath on teams' decisions this winter. The Pads are a mid-market team that is short 81 games worth of tix and concessions sales, not to mention two-thirds of their local TV and radio revenue. I'd be surprised if they're not looking to cut payroll and Myers is a logical place to start. Remember, his cost to them in real dollars - not AAV - is $22.5M/year for the next two years. If Barnes is non-tendered, he will go into the bin with a ton of other serviceable FA and non-tendered RPs. If the RS think they can get him back at a good value, they can do that. As far as Brasier goes, I want him off the team for BB and non-BB reasons.

We also don’t know if John Henry wants to eat 60 million for a potential .765 OPS DH for a couple decent prospects while also eating 20 million of JD Martinez’s contract when he is likely the better hitter and had two years left versus three. He lost lots of money this year and will possibly lose money next year as well so the real cost is factor as well as the luxury cap hit situation. Preller seems to think Campusano is a core guy And we ain’t getting him now, possibly never were. He clearly cleaned house on quantity to protect certain guys

The other factor here is that there are going to be a lot of non-tenders who should all pretty much go for less than their projected compensation.
There could also be a large quantity of DFAs with teams hoping someone might take over contracts.
This should be a vey interesting off season.

Same way they got Pillar on a 4m deal. no reason to overpay JBJ 6m+ on a 1, even a multi year deal when they should be able to find someone available and everyone should know by now Boras is going to look long and hard for every last cent before settling on any 1y deal.

Anyone that wants brasier gone does not want this team to compete next season. He is your second best reliever this season and is cost controlled for a long time. With him valdez and hernandez you build that bullpen back up makes no sense to get rid of him. He would be picked up in two seconds. Comments like those make me wonder if some ppl even watch the games.

Taylor and think Walden still have options if believe they can still reclaim what was 2019 effectiveness, rest are nothing and should be left to wander where they were found in the 1st place. You just cannot throw together an entire bullpen from 1 to 8 and expect to get anything that works. it ain't going to happen. there has to be a few pieces that did work and barnes, Brasier, hopefully hernandez and possibly another miracle from valdez is something. Finding 4 more will be hard enough. Just look at the mess from this year and the dozen plus pieces of rubbish we've seen wander onto the mound getting obliterated. Please think people.

I'm not advocating against him. I'm just saying that he's hardly untouchable or a totally must have. Even with Valdez. His ERA looks better than his FIP. Who knows what he gives you next year either? Again, I'm not advocating for dumping him either. Hell, a year ago Workman looked like a guy you might want to keep around going forward. Now he looks like a guy Bloom got rid of at the right time. All I'm saying is that Bloom might have a different idea of who'll be more effective going forward and for the long-term.

He has $22.5M (in real money) coming in 2021 and 2022. The reports from last winter (and I am conceding that we don't know squat about their accuracy) indicated the Holy Fathers would eat $10M/year. That would leave $25M over the next two years for the RS. But because of the unusual front-loading in the contract, the AAV hit for the RS would be much lower - about $3M, as I recall. This is difficult to discuss because we don't really know what was discussed last winter or even whether they talked at all. None of it was confirmed. My point is that the reported deal makes a lot of sense, given: 1.) the Holy Fathers' economic situation, particularly with the unprecedented economic crisis the sport faces; 2.) the RS' big-market status; 3.) our need to manage AAV; and 4.) our need for young talent to integrate into the mix starting in 2022. It's getting harder and harder for big-market teams to use their economic advantage. Taking on questionable contracts for prospects is one of the few ways left. I also think some on here are under-estimating the impact of the lost revenues. It's a an economic catastrophy.

From a BB standpoint, there's every chance that RB will be effective next season. There's also a chance he'll be average or worse. In other words, he'll be like many of the other RPs in the large discount bin of available non-tenders and FAs.

I think you're probably right on this. My estimates were just that - estimates. I actually think JBJ (and many other players of that caliber) will be by the phone as ST approaches. I like CB's ability to make the right decisions on choosing from that large pool. It might be analagous to 1995 after the work stoppage. DD was able to find guys on the cheap who contributed to a division championship: Troy O'leary, Eric Hanson, and Luis Alicea, to name a few.

The team’s recent telegraph on Erod was pretty interesting. www.masslive.com/redsox/2020/09/eduardo-rodriguez-boston-red-sox-starter-may-not-have-full-workload-in-2021-you-lose-a-lot-when-youve-been-down-as-long-as-he-has.htmlIt makes sense that with Erod’s injury history, the unknowns of Covid, the lack of work this year, and (I think) a history of conditioning issues, that he is (more) firmly in the wildcard category for next year. Of course, the 2021 rotation didn’t need any more contingencies for next year, as the whole thing is wobbly already. That means the difficult job of revamping the rotation just got harder. Maybe Erod will be an opener type to start the year or a bulk guy after a different opener. If there are any more hits to next year’s rotation, I will be rethinking my rebuild-on-the-fly-preference, but I really hope they never suck again like they do this year.

He should have been gone at the deadline for a bag of balls. I'm finding it very easy to root for the Sox to drop games when he's on the mound. Also, is anyone else nervous about a big incoming contract to Springer based on Werners comments that they expect to compete in 2021?

I will say I didn't appreciate what Brasier retweeted or whatever it was he exactly did and I'll leave it at that. My ears perked up when I heard Werner's comments as well which made me wonder if they're going to throw money around just show that they're not cheap for not giving Betts a Trout offer. I'd hate to see Bloom have to spend money that he doesn't feel like he really needs to spend just for the sake of spending money. I'll be interested in seeing the dynamic there between the front office and baseball ops - kind of wondering if it will be a little like 2011 when the FO was telling Theo and Tito that ratings were dropping and they needed some sexiness added to the team. , I'm hoping it's more along the lines of spending $ to make a deeper team or organization like taking on a contract to get prospects, although I suspect that the Myers/Campusano ship has long sailed. The Pads will hang onto Campusano and probably make Mejias available and I can see Bloom pouncing on that. Maybe there's another move like that they can make for prospects. Or maybe they make Bauer a huge single season contract offer - didn't he say he wanted to go from year-to-year? Or maybe I misunderstood or misremembered. I just hope Bloom is doing what he wants or was hired to do.

What is the Bauer thing? The guy is not even necessarily better than Odorizzi or Minor. In a season of 10 starts, he is better thus far. But before this season, the guy had one big year. Not nearly (nor as recently) as Minor, though, who was better last year than Bauer has ever been.
I’m not advocating for those guys. I am merely suggesting that none of them are certain to be especially good. (Bauer has had an ERA+ better than 109 *once* in a full season).
If he wants an affordable one-year contract, well, what’s the harm? But let’s not kid ourselves that that changes the AL East dynamic that substantially.

I think its the fact he will take a one year or two deal and that he is a pretty good pitcher. That is why he comes up as an option for the sox so much. And watching the yanks this season and the fact they have to cut payroll next season id say that the sox have a better then normal chance to win the division giving this seasons short comings.
