It’s not a false choice just because you say it is- just a heads up You’re downright offended they added an average swingman with starting experience. It’s honestly pathetic that he can’t sign depth arms without you bitching I’d be happier if he were a depth arm. But they traded Hembree and Workman at the deadline, and now they added Ottavino and Andriese. So there is no lengthening of the bullpen. They basically exchanged Hembree for Andriese in that 6/7 inning role. I’m not sure that makes them better. And it is a false choice because it ignores the third option of adding to the bullpen with different signings. Personally, I wanted Rosenthal. If they’d signed him and gotten Ottavino, you could have Barnes —> Ottavino —> Rosenthal in the 7-9th innings, which would be pretty solid. Just as an example. Andriese is projected to be considerably better than Hembree. Ottavino is projected to be considerably better than Workman. Why do you feel like these aren't improvements to the roster?

I’d be happier if he were a depth arm. But they traded Hembree and Workman at the deadline, and now they added Ottavino and Andriese. So there is no lengthening of the bullpen. They basically exchanged Hembree for Andriese in that 6/7 inning role. I’m not sure that makes them better. Not true, they have Darwinzon and Taylor actually playing now too. Barnes/Brasier/Ottavino/Hernandez are the late game arms. Brice/Valdez/Taylor for the middle of the games. Andriese is gonna be a guy that can spot start for them and eat up innings when necessary- Whitlock too if he makes the team. This idea that they are relying on Andriese in a 7th inning role is NONSENSE. He’s a versatile arm that gives them depth in multiple roles Btw you can’t cite Andriese‘s meh numbers last year then turn around and say he’s not an upgrade on Hembree when Hembree was the hottest of garbage last season Ok, that is fair. A few things, though: a) my point at the start of all this was that lumping Andriese into significant signings is an oversell. So in a sense we agree. b) that means the big off season moves are Kiké, Renfroe, Richards, and Ottavino, which, outside of AO, I think keeps the team equal to what they are replacing — maybe. A ton rides on Richards staying healthy. c) what I am reacting to is the sense of quantity of off-season additions equaling quality... saying they added guyS to the pen, an outfielder, a 2B , a starter... yes, that is literally true, but so is saying they added a bunch of starters last off-season. d) but what we also seem to agree on is the truly significant additions will be guys who were here anyway... primarily Sale and ERod. Now, you say it wasn’t Bloom’s fault various things happened. True. But Sale was hurt the previous season. Only a fool counted on him last year. McHugh was signed hurt, so only a fool was counting on him. ERod was a brutal hit. e) I struggle to be optimistic when I balance the added season and a half of Sale and Erod while still having a blackhole at 2B, a diminished outfield, a massive question mark at 1B.... all while the Yankees and Blue Jays made major moves. In other words, I see the Sox as better than last year’s Sox team, but still falling behind. f) I think this bullpen is still one of the team’s biggest question marks. I won’t go guy by guy, but one I’ll single out is Taylor, who I think is badly overrated. I am very hopeful about Ottavino. ADD: and that is my last post on the subject. No need for on-going head butts.

It’s not a given he lasts more than 3 months as far as I’m concerned, I just think he’s valuable depth. And I do understand the lack of optimism- I think they’re kind of accepting what they are as a middle of the pack team with wild card upside and that’s no fun to us when we’ve seen them win 4 times in less than 20 years. It is, however, unfortunately the reality of the situation given the composition of teams like the Padres and Dodgers. I do think they are ramping things up though. And by 2022 we’ll be back to where we want to be. I hope. Lol

Lol The Red Sox have won 4 WS in 17 years with roughly 80 percent roster turnover between titles, so this roster turnover is expected and necessary as the last 17 years has shown us. If the RS compete for title in 2022 or 2023 the Price, JD, and Pedroia contracts will be behind the RS, and they will ready to supplement a strong core with big ticket players for a 5th WS.
