peak Nomar was 97-2000. and then it was just very good Nomar and then, as you say, the wheels came off. It was too bad, he was so fun to watch and so easy to root for. "Just very good Nomar" put up 6.8 and 6.1 bWAR in 02 and 03. I don't have the stats in front of me, but I'd be willing to bet no Sox SS has topped that 6.8 since Not to prolong the tangent but fwiw, that's because bref grades his defense those two years really well. On FG he was worth "just" 4.8 and 5.8 WAR those two seasons given their much lower esteem of his defense. Down from an average of 6.9 fWAR from 97-2000. As for your question, the only Sox hitters to top that 6.8 mark on bWAR since 2002 are Betts (16, 18, 19), Ellsbury (11), Pedroia (08, 11), and Beltre (10).

Mayer has now played 47 games in Greenville dating back to last year and he has slashed .286/.386/.479 over 233 PAs, good for a 133 wRC+. This year alone he's slashing .309/.393/.511 with a 140 wRC+ which includes his first week where he struggled. Since 4/15 he's at .365/.434/.595, a 171 wRC+, with a 18% K rate and 10% BB rate. Is a promotion to Portland in the cards any time soon if he keeps crushing A+ pitching?

Given Mayer’s pedigree, I think there always was a strong hope, if not expectation, that he’d reach Double A this year. The only question now seems to be when. Some time in June seems like a good guess, health permitting

Some time in June seems like a good guess, health permitting You have to be right about that. On Mayer's profile page his ETA is 2025. Not late 2025. 2025. Two years to go, and he has to get through AA and AAA to meet that timetable. The accelerating offense is easily visible. But his profile also claims that his defense was as good as anybody's in his draft class. Do the evaluators know if that is coming to fruition as well?

I don't want to throw cold water on Mayer's week, but not only is the ballpark in Asheville hitter friendly, it's also 2000 feet above sea level. Is it Coors field? No. Do I think Mayer is gonna be a awesome major leaguer? Yes. Based on what I've heard in many a podcast the gulf between A level and Portland is significant. I have a feeling adjusting to Double A pitching will be a much sturdier test.

Ashville is an easy place to hit and their pitching staff is terrible and Mayer did exactly what you want an elite prospect to do in that situation. I mean, he had 31 total bases in six games! I am excited about that!

ESPN has a new Top 50. Marcelo is up to 3rd. Behind Elly DeLa Cruz and Eury Perez. Roman Anthony is 49. No sign of Bleis or Rafaela or Yorke

Shouldn’t Jordan also be promoted?

For me, the most anticipated move up to Portland since Mookie.

I was curious to see how Mayer ranked in terms of time spent in A+ vs other top prospects in the system.
Mayer: 60 games, 243 ABs Casas: 2 games, 7 ABs (his traditional High-A year was the cancelled 2020 season. Doesn’t really count) Devers: 128 games, 503 ABs Duran: 50 games, 199 ABs Dalbec: 100 games, 344 ABs Yorke: 101 games, 421 ABs Betts: 51 games, 185 ABs Bogaerts: 104 games, 384 ABs
Definitely some variety here with college, high school, and international guys. Some were high A Salem and some were high A Greenville. Some were under Bloom and some were not. I think Yorke is the best comparison to what Mayer is now in terms of age, experience, and management.

Shouldn’t Jordan also be promoted? Maybe the most under-rated Sox prospect. I'm guessing scouts don't like his body type but all he does is keep hitting.

You have to ask at whose expense his playing time at Portland would come from. Meidroth, Kavadas, Hickey, Scott? It doesn't look like he's going to play anywhere other than 1B, 3B or DH.

I’m historically aggressive with my calls for promotions when guys are performing, but I’d be pretty okay with Blaze being in Greenville for the entire year. I’d rather give him the time to let the bat fully come to form and then throw a challenge at him than push him to a level where he might flounder and risk being too far behind to ever really catch up. While getting Mayer up as quickly as realistically possible is a huge boost to the overall Sox team building (given how expensive up the middle players are), there’s not a whole lot of downside to slow playing Blaze’s development, IMO.

Love the news that Mayer has been promoted. One step closer to Boston! Selfishly, I am excited as Mayer is now a mere 30 minute drive away from seeing him with my own eyes ! Pretty exciting that he is playing at AA in his age 20 season.

Mayer fits in so perfectly at the big show. Also would be sweet if Yorke takes the 2b job too .
