The Reds had Wade Miley on a $10 million team option with a $1 buyout. The Reds elected to waive Miley so they didn't have to pay his buyout, and the Cubs picked him up. Miley is hard to get excited about but uh, he is coming off a 3 WAR season.
I would be furious if I were a Reds fan.

Yeah, the Reds are clearly in "let's suck this cash cow dry" mode. It's pretty egregious.

I would normally agree, yet Miley is so up and down. He's just as likely to have more walks than strikeouts next year than repeat what he just did. $10 million likely could get you Perez and Richards with money left over and I'd take that gamble all day long.

9 months a year away from your family. Not being able to go out for a drinks with your buds without constant autograph interruptions. It's not all gold. Without being in his shoes, it's hard to say but that doesn't sound like a life I'd be overly excited abo I can honestly say there isn't an athlete or entertainer that I'd swap lives with. I suspect Buster Posey could be drinking beers at the next table from me and I wouldn’t know it. Jason Varitek would be a more apt comp relative to fanbases and recognition. You wouldn't recognize Tek ? Not every player wants to be in the limelight.

White Sox picked up the option on Craig Kimbrel for 16mil. He's still very good, but that's a whole lot for a setup man.

Declining the option is probably best for the team by a mild amount, but it guarantees you a loud L on your record. Accept the option and maybe he plays well next year, and if he doesn't, well your reputation was already in trouble over this move.

So the Yankees, based on spotrac numbers, are 16.6 million over the cap at 226m and are talking about having a big offseason in the FA market. The Sox are at 176m. So why are so many people here seemingly uninterested in spending in free agency to make the team a lot better on paper anyways. I know they have extensions to work out for Xander and Raffy but you know what they don't have? Bad contracts that go years into the future. And they do have to worry about extending Judge, Severino and maybe others.
After resetting the tax cap why wouldn't the Sox consider a budget of 225m+, especially given the contracts coming off the books after next year.

Well, nobody knows what the rules will be. Under 2021 rules
210 is the magic line 210-230 are taxed an extra 20% Go above 230 and everything above 210 is taxed at 33% If you hit 250 it goes up to 43% and your top draft pick moves back 10 places
Everyone here would be loud and angry if they didn't close to $230 under those rules and some people would be mad if they didn't get close to 250.

Benny wins Gold Glove. Huh.
(I have no idea who was actually better defensively. I trust no defensive stats and do not believe a single GG voter saw enough of every player to render a properly informed opinion.)

That is part of my “huh.” That award seems like it involves a lot of factors that are not strictly defense. But I guess I’ve never once heard Benny described as an above-average LF. Sort of out of the blue.

Point: of all qualified AL left fielders, Benintendi was tied for best by DRS. Counterpoint: there were only two qualified AL left fielders. (Benintendi, Lourdes Gurriel, Verdugo, and Arozarena were all +7; Benintendi had the most innings of the 4. Austin Hays was +5 in 661 innings. Benintendi was also +1 by OAA, tied (with Verdugo) for 6th in the AL; meanwhile, Lourdes Gurriel, tied for best by DRS, was worst in the AL by OAA at -8. Benintendi, though, was best by UZR, but 3rd by UZR/150, behind Meadows and Grossman, who were both -1 by both DRS and OAA. In short: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)
Meanwhile, Joey Gallo - silver slugger nominee at DH, a position he did not play - actually won the Gold Glove at RF, despite not even being the best right fielder on his own team.

He's worth 8.5 million? Geez. He's been terrible. Wonder what the Dodgers see in him.

Heaney deal looks excellent to me. I'd love to see the Red Sox to load up on back of the rotation guys on value contracts and stuff the surplus in the pen.
$8.5 million isn't supposed to buy you much, and he has a long history of being fine. It looks to me like he was pretty much the same guy in 2021 despite his ERA going to hell.

Heaney is a fine back of the rotation starter. I don't think 1 year 8 million for one year is a bad deal but I also don't think it's particularly good either. Kind of an inconsequential deal if you ask me.

Just because it's cool. 1952 /photo/2 In the realm of useless information, I did some sleuthing to fill in the context. This was the picture on the back of the menu at Toots Shor's restaurant during the 1950s. Many living hall of famers gathered at his restaurant on Feb 3, 1951 which was a week after Jimmie Foxx and Mel Ott were elected to the hall of fame. There's quite a few examples of signed menus out there on the internet, below is one of them. sports.ha.com/itm/baseball-collectibles/others/1951-toots-shor-multi-signed-hall-of-fame-reunion-restaurant-menu/a/50029-80419.sHow about those prices for lobster in Manhattan - just 4 dollars?

Mickey Cochrane was a sharp dressed man.
John Goodman would have been perfect for a Jimmy Foxx role.

Going to be seeing a lot of Berrios: Ben Nicholson-Smith reporting its 131 million. 18.74 million AAV. No word regarding opt outs. I'd imagine for that bargain he's going to have least 1 opt out?
