Jose Berrios had a higher xERA, FIP, and xFIP than Eduardo Rodriguez in 2021 and 2019, and his 2020 was worse than both those seasons. He's signing a 6/120 extension, but the Red Sox didn't want to pay Eduardo 5/77.

Good get him off the board. I personally wanted nothing to do with Syndergaard. Interested to see what the contract will be though.

Not what I expected at all. Would not have wanted the pick loss for that.

Good deal for him. Gets paid on the prove it deal and re-enters the market without the QO-pick attached next winter.

Not sure I see the upside for the Angels there but I guess I'm also of the mindset I think Thor is cooked. I'm sure they're not done spending on that rotation though. Still need another guy maybe 2.

Seems like a weird deal. You pay a pretty big chunk of dough and give up a pick for Thor’s recovery season? Seems a good chance you get a guy working to find himself before he walks.

Don't think I'd be happy with that Berrios deal if I were a Blue Jays fan. Berrios needs to avoid arm trouble for like, 4 and a half years before they start to turn a profit on that deal.

Accounting for the draft pick, call Syndergard's deal a 1/25 contract maybe.
His last two real seasons he put up 4 WAR. He'll be two years past the surgery on opening day.
Looks like a deal in the ballpark of fair value to me.

Looks like a deal in the ballpark of fair value to me. The guys pitched 2 innings since 2020 and wasn't the epitome of health before then anyway. It's a big gamble if you ask me but maybe it'll pay off for them. However even if it does though he's going to be asking for a lot bigger deal next year. Just don't see the upside giving up a pick to give him this big of a 1 year deal.

Maybe one day they'll build an actual team. I would surmise that if Syndergaard got that, then Justin Verlander should do better than the 2 year 40 million projection thrown around. I'll guess he gets closer to 25 million per year for 2 years.

He's signing a 6/120 extension, but the Red Sox didn't want to pay Eduardo 5/77. But unlike Eduardo he is as durable as they come these days. He started 32 games in his last three full seasons with 190+IP each. According to his MLB profile the last time he was on the DL was in 2014. This is where the money difference comes from IMO. Eduardo also has that nifty/scary option, so "just" looking at 5/77 is only half the story.

In a scenario in which Eduardo is bad, you'd be comparing his 5/77 (starting in 2022) to a scenario in which Berrios is bad and paid 6/120 (starting in 2023).
It's true that Berrios probably projects to have the IP advantage over Eduardo though.

Just imagine this guy in Tampa for the next 10 years...our offseason workout should probably include glute squeezes...just to avoid cramps...

Well hopefully he doesn't pull an albies/acuna and accept some ridiculously team friendly deal. Though who knows with the CBA changes coming what will constitute team friendly a year from now. Also they'll probably just trade him by year 7-8 when he makes too much for them ala Longoria and snell.

Yeah probably doomsday scenario if he signs or doesn't sign. He stays with Ray's for cheap or goes to Yankees for top dollar in free agency. Lol.

I get it on some level but why do folks act like this yankees ownership are bound to sign everyone? They signed Gerrit Cole other than that they haven't really signed any huge deals. If a guy like Wander Franco theoretically with today's rules of free agency was available every single big market team would be after him including Boston. It's not the days of George steinbrenner anymore who only cared about winning at any cost.

The Cole contract is a good example why they're the Yankees. They blew away the next highest starting pitching contract by 100 million. The best scenario is that Franco goes to the Dodgers maybe. The Angels too with Moreno. Very few owners want to pay absolute top dollar for top players and soak up that much payroll.

The marlins paid for some of Stantons contract but I stand by my comment that the yankees aren't the same team that are going to blow every team out of the water and buy all the players. Also we're talking 6 years from now. Who knows what payrolls will look like. Maybe Bloom and the Sox are going to stay away from big dollar long term deals until then. Maybe they save their money for Soto who knows but I can say with decent confidence that if Franco becomes a free agent the Red sox will be involved.

As far as we know the Sox highest known offer to Mookie was 300 million? The Dodgers spent a extra 60 on Mookie. Not trying to get into the Mookie discussion. He's long gone, but even Henry has shown limits to absolute top dollar free agents. I don't see Bloom as that type of GM to not spread around the money more evenly around the roster, either.

Fair point and it's hard telling not really knowing exactly what happened with the mookie stuff. It was reported he wanted to go to free agency and find out what he could get on the market which is obviously his right. Then covid hit and could have had a big impact on him then turning around and accepting the giant deal from the dodgers. We'll never really know. But also the landscape of free agency is probably going to go through a rather large overhaul in this cba so I guess its probably pointless for us to speculate on Franco or any of these ultra players who will be free agents years from now until we know what the new rules will be. I guess maybe that might make it more likely Franco could accept a 10 year deal because who the heck knows.

The real unknown really to me is if the Sox ever met in the middle and offered Mookie what the Dodgers did. Covid or no Covid I don't think that happened. Turns out 360 million is what it took. Maybe he didn't want to accept that in Boston, and that's the only other part of the unknown we don't know.

Certainly once again you could be right on the money but I'll also add that currently the Red sox have 0 players signed to a contract the year Franco would be slated to be a free agent. The yankees, dodgers and angels can't say the same thing. Just can't count out the sox to go all in on one of these mega free agents.
