Can we *please* get a RH OF? No Conforto, no Kepler, no Gallo (or getting wistful over him)… Right. Hand. Ed. Remaining FA options, sorted by projected WAR:
Brian Anderson - 1.5 Mancini - 1.2 Pham - 1.0 Pollock - 1.0 Wil Myers - 0.8 McCutchen - 0.7
Nothing else above 0.3. I have literally no memory of ever hearing about Brian Anderson.

I hear that… might need to be a trade. My point is that adding a Conforto or trading for a Kepler uses resources on the Sox’ least needed areas.

Unless you think Verdugo can do it. The fact they haven't used him there more leads me to believe they don't think he'd be very good at it long term.

The OF is lefty heavy, and their corner sluggers are lefty. They need a RH bat to go with Story.

While a RH corner OF is ideal (missing Hunter Renfroe more than I thought I would), a RH DH is more realistic with Justin Turner or JDM their best bets. I'm lukewarm on Mancini, Drury, and Profar, but they're viable options. That's why I wanted Mitch Haniger really badly and wanted the Sox to overpay a bit to have a good shot at getting him. Might not have mattered with his west coast preference anyways but I thought he was the best fit out there.

I’m out on a lefty corner OF. I think a centerfield capable one could make sense, but only if they also get a RH hitting 1B type (Drury or Turner work). Dalbec is off the roster in this scenario.

If the best option available is a lefty then I'm fine with it.

So, to play devil's advocate here... Right now they could roll out this lineup against lefties:
Kiké Yoshida
Devers Story Refsnyder Arroyo Dalbec Casas Wong
Against lefties, the only below average bats here are Wong and maybe Casas, no? Maybe they're fine with this? They need another position player or two, but I don't think it has to be a righty.

I suspect that Dalbec or FA RH bat (Drury?) will take some ABs from Casas against lefties, at least until Casas shows that he can put up better than a .600 OPS against them. Personally, I’d take Drury on something like 2/18M but I don’t hate Dalbec as a purely platoon 1B/3B. ETA: not just talking about Casas’ SSS, his AAA splits (esp slugging) show the same issues.

Yeah I think people really discount Refsnyder as the RHH corner OF guy. He was really really good last year! It’s fair to not be totally buying into him yet, but I think he’s a good bet to at least be above average offensively against lefties and he’s a capable defender.

Okay, Heyman is reporting this so....it has to be another team other than the Red Sox close to signing him.

Someone that hasn't been mentioned much but seems like a great fit is Justin Turner. He's a righty pull hitter who could play DH most days and be a RHH platoon option for Casas/Devers when needed. He fills the DH role, keeps some lineup versatility, while also not costing much. Wished for him for Xmas!

So basically, Bloom traded J.D. Martinez to the Dodgers for Justin Turner.

Kinda still want Kepler tbh I second this especially considering Yoshida is a subpar defender. I’d also love if Maeta or Gray came along with him too.

So, roster as of now is looking something like:
C McGuire 1B Casas 2B Story 3B Devers SS ?? LF Yoshida CF Hernandez RF Verdugo DH Turner
B Arroyo B Dalbec B Refsnider B Wong
They could roll with Arroyo at 2B, Story at SS, and Valdez on the bench in lieu of signing a SS. Either way, I think there’s room to option Dalbec and add a CF/RF. FA pickings are pretty slim. I still like the idea of trading for Ramon Laureano, as long as his cost isn’t exorbitant.

So they’re really comfortable with Yoshida in left and Verdugo in right then? Let’s hope Verdugo isn’t trying to bulk up this offseason.

But @ $12.5 million on the last year of his deal, Chaim might pull the trigger especially if they miss out on Eovaldi or Kluber. That said, call me nuts, but I’d greatly prefer Maeda. Yes, he missed all of last season because of TJ, but he’s also on the last year of a crazy cheap deal of a $3 million base salary for next season. Totally worth the risk if it isn’t costing you any substantial prospects (which it shouldn’t).

Pretty happy we didn't end up with Brandon Drury, who was on the scrap heap one year ago before he put up 3 WAR by beating his xwOBA by 35 points against the NL Central

So there is the obvious need for a middle infielder. Even if they wanted Arroyo to start, there wouldn't be anyone on the bench at the moment who could backup SS and 2B besides your starting CF.
The other spot that could be improved is Dalbec. Regardless of your feeling towards him, with Turner on board he's a bit redundant. Even if Dalbec learned how to play COF over the winter, they have that covered with Refsnyder.
The other gap in the depth chart seems to be centerfield. Kiké is great there but he also serves as infield depth, and there really isn't anyone else who can play there unless Refsnyder and Verdugo are expected to get time in center, but besides a 16 inning game I don't really want to see that.
So I'd say Dalbec's roster spot should be upgraded into CF depth. The question is who fits that role who is still available?
