2023 Draft Signing Period
|
Post by Mike Andrews on Jul 11, 2023 12:40:28 GMT -5
Here are my "super wicked early speculative gut-check predictions" for the 2023 signing season. I don't have any inside info behind this yet, these predictions are just based on gut feel and years of history of making these projections and the little bits of news that have already leaed out. These initial guesstimates have been fairly solid in years past, but they're just that - projections with a significant amount of possible variability. Feedback is welcome and appreciated. I will update from time to time as more info comes in and as opinions evolve.
Top Ten Rounds (entire amount counts towards bonus cap) Round, Overall Pick, Player, Projected Bonus 1. Kyle Teel $4,250,000 2. Nazzan Zanetello $2,500,000 3. Antonio Anderson $2,000,000 4. Matt Duffy $500,000 4. Kristian Campbell $492,700 4. Justin Riemer $200,000 5. Connelly Early $150,000 6. CJ Weims $10,000 7. Caden Rose $30,000 8. Trennor O'Donnell $10,000 9. Blake Wehunt $30,000 10. Ryan Ammons $10,000
After 10th round, above $150K 11. Nelly Taylor $300,000 ($150k counts against the cap) 15. Phoenix Call $600,000 ($450k counts against the cap) (closest call)
After 10th round, possible $150K or less signs (count $0 towards cap) 12. Max Carlson 13. Cade Feeney 14. Jojo Ingrassia 16. Isaac Stebens 18. Zach Fogell 19. Stanley Tucker
Total spent towards cap using these projections: $10,782,700 Red Sox Cap: $10,295,100 Red Sox Cap +5%: (no draft pick penalty): $10,809,855
Super wicked early projected not to sign 17. Dylan Schlaegel 20. Robert Orloski

What's the thinking on Call? He looks like a classic insurance pick

A reminder that the signing deadline is July 25 at 5pm. I'd bet Kyle Teel and maybe Zanetello and Anderson will be at Fenway for the Mets series July 21-23.

Hope you’re right! As long as 1 of the 3 high schoolers taken today sign I’m good, but Call would obviously be the preference. I’m still skeptical Tucker signs for the reasons I laid out in the Day 3 thread, but would love for him to.

I think the real question here is where does that $450,000 that is guessed here as going to Phoenix Call end up going? Before that pick, my guess (based on nothing other than just being too free to offer my opinions on things I know nothing about) was that Antonio Anderson would get a couple hundred thousand over 2m and then maybe someone(s) in the 11+ rounds get maybe $200,000-250,000 and maybe Justin Reimer randomly costs a little more than that or something - no unexpected signings in other words.
Sure do hope it's a guy named Phoenix who ALSO happens to have an all-time great last name for prospect puns. The gameday threads will write themselves, iakovos11 is salivating.

Call me crazy, but I love some good prospect names you can have fun with. And as awesome a name Nazzan Zanetello is, that's tough to work with for Gameday threads. Donatello? Shazzam?

Petition to divert SP Donation Drive funds into a new Soxprospects NIL fund where we funnel some royalties to Call every time his name is used in a game thread title to help entice him to sign

I did some looking into the timeline for signings and debuts last year to see if there was anything to notice. Signing bonus information started trickling in during the week following the draft, with official contracts being signed in two bunches: one on the 26th (7 days after the end of the draft) and one on the 29th (10 days after).
The draft class can be broken down into three groups: high school hitters, college pitchers, and Chase Meidroth. Meidroth was the only college hitter that they drafted last year. The college pitchers was the easiest to describe. They drafted 13 of them. Six pitched during the 2022 season and seven didn’t. Some due to injuries and I would guess some due to enough innings already. The pitchers that did make an appearance all got their first innings between August 16th and 20th; about two to three weeks after signing. They all made only two pitching appearances. The top high school hitters (Romero, Coffey, and Anthony) debuted on August 9th-three weeks after the draft. Brannon followed four days later. Brannon and Coffey spent the whole time in Florida, but Romero and Anthony moved up to Salem after three weeks. Meidroth was his own special case. He made it to game action in Florida on August 5th and was playing in Salem on August 9th.
The Red Sox ended up with a little bit of a different group this year. 2022 saw 13 college pitchers, 5 high school hitters, and one college hitter. Their top five rounds went 3 high school hitters, two college pitchers, and one college hitter. This year, the Sox have done 6 college hitters, 4 high school hitters, 11 college pitchers, and 1 high school pitcher. 2023’s top five rounds were three college bats, two high school bats, and two college pitchers.
The interesting thing about this year is that the draft is 8 days earlier than it was last year, while the season still ends the same time. This will give the draftees another week of time this year. For the pitchers that do make an appearance, it won’t mean much. 3 appearances rather than 2, likely. For the hitters, it will have a bigger impact. I would expect the college hitters to get up to Salem quickly. Meidroth got 85 PAs in Salem and barring injury or contract issues, Zeel, Campbell, and Riemer could easily surpass that.

I’m going to be honest. I mostly want Nelly Taylor to sign and climb the ladder so I can see all the minor league Gameday Thread titles that Joel will come up with using a reference to one of the great Rap artists of our age.

I'll do the research, but could use an assist here. My rap tastes are stuck in the 80's/90's. I've heard of Nelly, but give me some De La Soul or A Tribe Called Quest.

Some of his stuff was so popular and omnipresent that nearly everyone has heard it even if you aren’t a fan of the genre. Big songs that even a casual listener will know…Ride Wit Me and It’s Getting Hot in Here. There’s plenty of others and he’s collaborated with tons of others on music that isn’t “his”. www.udiscovermusic.com/stories/best-nelly-songs/End of thread drift.

This thread has turned into one of my favorite traditions around here. Love the optimism on Call. So much of this draft is going to come down to what the first 3 picks get, so if a couple of those guys sign we should have a much clearer picture of what the Sox might be able to do with the other HS selections.

Who are, if any, some twitter accounts to follow that break these signings?

Who are, if any, some twitter accounts to follow that break these signings? Jim Callis the main one, but Carlos Collazo and Jonathan Mayo, too.

I wish I declared myself for the MLB draft after my senior year in college and picked up an easy $10k from a team looking for an underslot deal. The wouldn't even have to let me play.

Sox offered above slot to Call before drafting him and as of tonight, he is weighing the offer to sign. His commitment to UCLA is not as strong as once believed.

That’s one good thing about the Red Sox kids still love the organization. The tradition behind this team still holds. Very very good.
How much fun is it when we can play around with the draft board. I get so sick of the usual 6 teams doing this every friggin year.

The best part we don’t have to wait for the dumb commissioner to approve over the slot deals. My lord what a process. Drove me bonkers

Sounds like maybe Orloski wants ~$500k, which he will get offered if Call doesn't accept the offer?
