the jersey sales in Fall River alone make this worthwhile

If nothing else Campbell has a real solid mustache I won't take that from him.

Trading a young position player with upside for a reliever should be a cardinal sin of baseball Travis Shaw says hello.

Not too mention the lower leverage relievers were a mess the last two years. Getting a solid young arm that can eat up some of those Ort/Garza innings is a start to improving on a weakness. I'd also bet this means a trade for a top tier second baseman is around the corner.

I don't hate the trade or moving on from Urias, but even mediocre middle infielders are incredibly difficult to come by. Through the end of July last year, Red Sox second baseman collectively hit .252/.286/.377, good for a 74 wRC+, 26th in baseball. That came from Arroyo, Valdez and Pablo Reyes. Then Urias can in and hit to the tune of a 98 wRC+, which is perfectly fine.
As long as they replace him with someone solid I have no issues, but I'm a little skeptical given how terrible 2B has been for about 5 years now.

I'd also bet this means a trade for a top tier second baseman is around the corner. You could enter the year with a group of like Nick Robertson, Zach Kelly, Chris Murphy & now Campbell as your AAA relief depth, which feels way better than what it’s been in recent years.

Wonder if they are looking at Jonathan India who the Reds might be looking to move. Fills 2nd base and righty bat. Not sure about his glove though.

If Merrifield is a 1 yr deal I’d be fine with it, hard no on anything more than 1 yr

Don't see what would be wrong with trading Urias on 1/5 for Campbell and then signing Merrifield for 1/10

Edman had a negative UZR at 2B this year and isn’t a good hitter either. I know he is a bigger name, but I would rather aim higher offensively.

I am pleased. Not fond of Urias. To me this is the start of turning the page.

Yeah, I love the 25 walks in 89-1/3 against 106 k’s over the 3 years in the minors. He did walk 13 in 28 innings at the mlb level but seems like he should limit free passes

It is possible they are clearing the way for Rafaela to play 2B until Mayer is big league ready, then Story back to 2B?

Just when I thought we were past the Bloom-induced brain rot of making a huge deal out of every marginal move, we have a borderline freakout over Rule 5 protections and criticism over trading one of the most replaceable players on the roster and getting a return from him instead of just non-tendering him outright.
Now if they turn around and sign Whit Merrifield to a 3/27 deal or something then yeah, this deal looks like part of a less thrilling plan. Or maybe this becomes the Renfroe trade where they don’t end up filling the voided position in a meaningful way. There are certainly ways this deal ends up being a slight negative! But the odds of that are so low and the level of actual harm this could do is so minimal that I just can’t imagine caring enough to question it until we have a clearer view of the plan at large.

meh I don’t really see too much consternation
I think there are things to like about Urias and I could see him rebounding in Seattle. It was clear they don’t really like Urias though so it’s better to get a reliever with options and control than nothing!

I like this trade.
I was never really impressed with Urias and it seemed obvious to me that Cora and others in the organization weren't impressed by him either.
If they had been we would have seen Urias play every day and we wouldn't have seen Valdez and Reyes as much as we did in September.
Urias drew walks and he had the two grand slams but did nothing else.
For 5 million he's no slam dunk. He's a gamble. He could be what he was with the Brewers in 21 and 22, which was decent, or he could be a guy whose hit tool becomes so bad that the walks will decrease and the power as well. There's a lot of variability there.
I think the Sox want more certainty even if its mediocrity because they dont want to take a chance on 2b becoming a black hole of suck like it was last year. I'm thinking they either sign Merrifield for 1 or 2 years or they trade for Jonathan India. I think they like some RH power so I can see India as a more likely target. Would love Torres for Verdugo but that's not happening.
But to turn Urias into a potentially useful reliever is a win.
Campbell has had good numbers everywhere he's been. His walk rate with Seattle was a bit high but his track record in the minors shows good control.
He could become a reliable arm that takes some of the load off of Winckowski and Schreiber. He was encouraging with Seattle in a relatively short stint.
I know trading for middle relievers is frowned on but I think the Sox did well here. They were going to DFA Urias anyways, so to turn nothing into a potential real world useful asset is a good thing.

Here's a quiz: Why was Breslow hired? What was the Sox biggest weakness last season? Is it possible to get something for nothing? Is this the beginning of the off season or the end?

Looks like Campbell has a nasty slider but the fastball could use some work. Maybe Breslow sees a path there.

Looks like Campbell has a nasty slider but the fastball could use some work. Maybe Breslow sees a path there. My understanding is that fastball shape/spin is probably the one “stuff”-related thing you can’t really change. You can add velocity up to a point, you can tweak and improve break and shape of offspeed stuff, but fastball shape is typically relatively unchanging (combination of arm angle, delivery, and the way the ball comes off your hand), at least without major mechanical overhaul.
