Here it is - Fangraph opening day power rankings blogs.fangraphs.com/fangraphs-power-rankings-opening-day-2024/We and the Angels in Tier 5 - no man's land - 80-82 The two teams in this tier feel a little lost, stuck in that limbo of not yet rebuilding but not being good enough to compete this year. Boston’s chances of making some noise in the AL Wild Card race took a hit when Lucas Giolito was lost for the season with an elbow injury. The Red Sox signed Brayan Bello to an aspirational six-year extension, and they’re hoping the early returns are promising. They’re also expecting the adjustments Nick Pivetta made late last year carry over, and maybe Tanner Houck and Kutter Crawford take a step forward. That’s a lot riding on a bunch of hypotheticals. Boston won’t be bad, but it doesn’t seem to be good enough where it counts, either. The same could be said for the Angels. With Shohei Ohtani out of the picture, the Angels decided to invest heavily in their … relief corps? There were so many other areas on their roster they could have bolstered that their commitment to spending on so many relievers was a bit comical. Of course, the success of their season will hinge on whether Mike Trout, Anthony Rendon, and Taylor Ward are healthy and contributing. But even if they are, and the lineup is scoring runs, the pitching staff is weak enough that it probably won’t matter.

McAdam/MassLive’s season preview: www.masslive.com/redsox/2024/03/what-to-expect-from-the-2024-red-sox-mcadam.htmlI think it’s a pretty solid overview. A lot of potential, some guys with upside to outperform expectations, and overall a group that can be better than people think, but enough question marks that some bad injury luck and underperformance from a key player or two can bring it all crumbling down.

The whole offseason plan that's driven a lot of people crazy has meant we have 3-4 lineup spots for guys 25 or under (Casas, either 2B, Cedanne and maybe Abreu unless they end up kind of platooning with each other) around a 27 year old star hitter signed for a while, plus 3 starters in the rotation in Crawford, Houck, Whitlock who are locked up under cheap team control the next 4 years along with a 25 year old opening day starter we just signed to an extension for even longer, and even have 4 pre-arb bullpen guys who look solid. We traded 3 guys in Verdugo, Sale, Schreiber to acquire and open up PT for younger players and added only one healthy short term vet in O'Neill (unless you want to count Anderson or Joely). I don't disagree with the Sox placement in the rankings, plenty of people might not think these players will succeed (and not all will), but idk how you say we're not finally rebuilding and put us in a bucket with the Angels who are running >30 guys like Aaron Hicks, Miguel Sano, Drury, Ward, Rendon out there around the awesome but still 32 year old star hitter in Mike Trout.
