I'm gonna go out and say I really like this move. I originally said this Offseason that id like to give Giolito the deal rodon got from the giants but this is even less then that so I'm not turning back now.

Hey, something happened! Sweet! Looks pretty good at first blush. If they can haul in Imanaga too I'll be very happy.

I’m pretty sure we can QO him if and when he opts out. I like it very much!

I don't think a pitcher for 19 mil and short term should preclude them from trying to pivot to Montgomery or Snell either. Especially when you look at this deal compared to what the projections on Giolito to start the offseason. Feel like most said he'd get 4 years and 20 a year. Perhaps he's betting on himself and took less though.

This is solid. Glad they kept it short term

I like it. Would’ve preferred if there was some kind of club option (maybe the option to supersede the opt out by tacking on an extra year or more money), just in case he turns out to have regained his form, but I think this makes sense for both sides. Especially if we can QO him if he pitches well.

Definitely like this. Him on 2 years or less is perfect

I like it too. Plenty of upside with Giolito. First SP to go under the MLBTR contract prediction too (I think).

So, let's say he opts out 70% of the time, and the 30% of the time he opts in he's worth $5 million on average. That makes the opt out worth .3 * (19-5) = 4.2 million negative value to the Sox. So this is equivalent to about a 1 year/$23.2 million deal. Pretty good contract, IMO.
If he opts out he is also telegraphing that he will decline the QO, so we will be able to pick up a draft pick for free in all likelihood.

Having a 3rd year option if somehow things worked out is obviously helpful either way but it would seem extremely unlikely that they'd exercise if somehow it came to it but hey why not build that in.

Yeah this is actually great. We basically have opt out insurance in the form of a QO draft pick

Wow, this seems like a really nice deal. If he bounces back, it’s great.

I'm tepid on this, though I would have been shocked if he went elsewhere. Anyone do a deep dive on how to get him back on track? I'm gonna light some incense and pray at the altar of Andrew Bailey.

The big hope now is breslow Bailey and co can get him back to his 2019-2021 self. Even if they can't he feels like a great 4th/5th starter who is gonna give innings and not be totally useless like kluber.

I liked him as a reclamation project and that is what he is with this contract. If we get him to bounce back it’s great for him too
Very glad they didn’t do something silly like 4/80

Every time I saw him pitch he was lit up bigtime so...Not so sure I like this signing, but will save my judgement for his performance.

I really like this one. He apparently went through a divorce during the all star break and had an ERA over 7.00 after it and being in three teams. He was much better before the break.

If he keeps them at his White Sox levels he can still be a very good pitcher If he keeps them at the levels they were at when his life fell apart (traded, divorced, waived) then he’s not a big league starting pitcher. But those are such enormous rates of HR that it can’t possibly be sustainable, especially with somebody we’ve seen have so much success at this level
