Like every move it all depends on what else happens. But I've been on the record before saying the Red Sox should be more willing to trade away veterans on the major league team for young talent. This is the sort of thing you have to do if you want to remain consistently competitive.

What is with people saying below average defense makes a guy a future DH? Vaughn Grissom is highly unlikely to be a DH at any point in the next 10 years.
They’ve replaced Chris Sale with Giolito and a guy who looks like he’ll hit .300 a few times in his career. If they can use the money they’ve saved here and from the Verdugo trade then they’ve had a pretty excellent offseason.

I am glad you guys like the trade. I think its a horrible trade. I hope I'm proved wrong. I am of the opinion that this trade by itself really doesn't move the needle that much either way. Just on the face of it, I guess I'd rather have Paxton/Grissom rather than Sale.

I'm not sure why you're looking at ratings from before he jumped from A-Ball to hitting .291/.353/.440 in the majors in one year

Oh so that outdated box that says he’s currently a 20 hit tool as he hits .330 in AAA? Convincing argument. I’ll actually go with what he’s actually doing while playing baseball

He's carried a 45 hit tool his entire minor league career. His MILB career stat line. .320/.407/.477 In 2022 when he was still a prospect, pipeline had a 55 grade on the hit tool. He’s 22 (at least for another week)

Wonder if they make a quick move on Paxton now. If you are counting on Sale to be an injury risk #4, Paxton projects similarly. Swap Paxton for Sale for '24 and add Grissom for the long-term?

MLB says 55 and describe him as having “outstanding bat-to-ball skills with a very good approach.” Fangraphs just didn’t update his grade by the time he graduated, which happens when you jump from AA to MLB at age 21. There is a roughly 0% chance he hits .220.

IIRC Grissom is also from Aruba, which beg the question: How many languages does he speak?

Doesn't seem like a great deal on value, moving 10.5 mil of his salary for a player like Grissom.
Still, I am glad Sale is gone. Was so sick of him.

Let’s keep in mind the Braves somewhat butchered his development with making him jump extremely quickly to the MLB
He torched his first actual season of AAA last year as a 22 year old. He will turn 23 in like a week
Feel like people are sleeping on the potential of the player we just got here who we will control for a good bit

Another thought - based on the returns for 1 year of oft-injured pitchers like Sale and Glasnow, I have to think no one from that Luzardo/Gilbert/Kirby group of starting pitchers is going anywhere. Seems like the cost would be enormous.

That mlb link says 55 hit, no? Good catch, his 2021 MLB profile I looked at initially had a 45 hit tool so they adjusted. Fangraphs still had him as a 45 hit tool. Either way, his batting average is higher than his hit tool for scouting reports, which suggests either the scouts are wrong or a regression is coming. I've listened to Ian tell me multiple times on the podcasts not to get caught up with the stats and that's why I believe in the scouting report and a potential regression next season.

We joke we have no pitching, but now we literally have no pitching. Just can't get behind trading Sale for another future DH. Controllable pitching is a very valuable resource - just look how much we've shelled out for a guy who just put up an ERA over 5 to come get shelled at Fenway - and Grissom's defense is atrocious. Absolutely need Montgomery now. They have pitching: Crawford, Bello, Goilito, Houck, Pivetta, Whitlock. Now none of those guys are aces, they’re all likely three or four starters. But Chris Sale was no longer an ace and couldn’t be counted on in the least. So if you mean they don’t have a number 1 starter, well they did not have such a pitcher before this trade. I am not really sure that Montgomery is guaranteed to be a number one either.

Grissom can hit , defense is mehhhh, outfield experiment is interesting, I don’t want Paxton , don’t trust his arm and he was awful last nine starts

I wasn't clamoring for a Sale trade -- frequent visitor to Chris Sale Island -- but this looks like a tasty return.
I also have a hunch that this means they have an agreement in the works for Montgomery.

Can’t help but notice the amount of salary savings they are getting here is about enough to exactly cover 1 James Paxton signing
