Shawn Chacon at least punched out Ed Wade. They may erect a statue of him in Philly.

People need to cool it with the stuff about Doubront being taken out of the rotation - we're still a month (or two) away from that being a realistic possibility.

Real tight strike zone tonight. Maybe it's just the angle on the NY feed, but I've seen at least a half dozen borderline pitches called balls so far.

It's not just the NY feed. It appears as though everyone has Pedroia's strike zone tonight.
edit: The strike zone doesn't matter when Lester's sucking this much.

It's tough for Lester to pitch well when he's not getting that outside fastball/backdoor cutter against righties. He doesn't have the stuff to live in the middle of the plate or the command to work the edges of a tighter zone.

Strike zone is tight, and it's probably making him steam as always when he doesn't get calls. Regardless, he looks pretty off tonight. He's far from a true ace, as the lack of consistency and emotional control on the mound indicate.
Big double play right there, nice grab by Drew and turn by Peds.

Isn't this really the same 'old' Lester we have seen for years? Lots of pitches goes 5 innings. This series scares me.

I'm so glad there's no instant replay in baseball. The umpires in this league are way too good for that to be necessary.

Lester hasn't been a 5-inning guy since about 2008. He's inconsistent, but he generally goes deep into games.

Napoli is a useless bag of meat who has lost whatever plate discipline he had and can no longer hit lefties. He is what he was last year,

In 2008, went pretty deep into games, much more so than in 2011 and 2012. This year, he's been better, but he's had a few discouraging starts lately.

He's far from a quality middle of the order first baseman, but he's not a terrible offensive contributor. The plate discipline has disappointed me, don't get me wrong, but he's still seeing as many pitches as anyone in the game. It'd just be nicer if our lineup could afford to hit him 7th (which is actually where he spent a lot of his time during his amazing season with Texas) instead of 4th and 5th. But the dude did carry us throughout April.

Apparently the borderline strikes are only going one way tonight.
MLB umps are sooo bad at their jobs.

Napoli has a lot of swing-and-miss in his bat, but he also has impressive power and I expect his walk rate will start to rise as the year goes on. Plus his defense has been better than expected. He's far from elite, but he's an above-average regular, and getting paid at a reasonable rate, too.

Egad, C.C. has been dealing. Always liked him, a power house work horse who also knows how to pitch. To think some believed he was too heavy and would age fast. Not really fair for Bradley to be facing him.

This team has struggled against lefties. Because Napoli, Gomes, and Middlebrooks are not a force against them.

Looks like the ump got it right on that play, or at very least is was so close you cant really tell. Weird play for Girardi to get run on.

Obviously pitchers will adjust, and Iglesias will come back to earth, but my god has he been impressive in this stint. The kid is making a serious case to play every day, and it's really damn fun to watch.

Jonny Gomes is a useless, tatooed bag of meat who cannot hit lefties or field his position. I could be just as great a clubhouse guy for 1/20th the price. Someone suggested to me last week that the Sox should jettison Gomes any way they can and trade spare parts for Jason Bay. I laughed. Then I looked at Bay's numbers vs. lefties this year - in Seattle. Now I do not laugh. I weep.

Jason Bay is a reasonable trade target. He still can hit lefties. Also he is cheap. We don't need to give up too much to trade for him.

Agreed. I actually think if he came back to Boston it would (somewhat) revitalize him - starting against lefties only.

Lester should not have been brought out in the 7th. He already was at 109 pitches. What purpose did it serve?
