Some pretty exciting pitching matchups in this one. Should be a fun series. So true, the matchups lined up perfectly, fun series to watch. I have to say, I'm impressed by the Yankees success. I really thought they had a bad team at the beginning of the year, but their pitching has had good results. Kuroda has been a godsend for them ... |

Well, despite all the ink spilled about Vernon Wells and Lyle Overbay, the Yankees offense has actually been about as bad as people predicted - they're 11th in the AL in runs, and tied with Houston (?!) for 12th in OBP. The Yankees pitching has really held them together. They've allowed the second fewest runs in the league, and they have walked the fewest batters.

Wells has certainly fallen back to earth.
.911 OPS in April, .610 in May.
I hate to wish struggles upon a guy, but thank-fucking-god. If I had to watch one more washed up has-been find Michael's Secret Stuff in the Yankees clubhouse I was going to give up altogether.

We should have made a run at Kuroda. It would have hurt them and helped us. He's been extremely consistent and durable in his last 5 years or so and was available under a 2 year deal. That alone would have knocked them out of playoff contention and put us right in the mix.
But that #7 pick was just too tantalizing. We can all see why they didn't push that option but I would have looked at up to $20 mil per for Kuroda. Yeah, if necessary. Make it painful for the Yanks. Except for losing such a great pick it was an ideal scenario.

Pettitte and Hughes are more talented than those three Red Sox pitchers, and Hughes hasn't pitched all that well. 2. Nova has been awful. He should be a reliever. 2011 was a fluke. 3. David Robertson certainly isn't a no name anymore. Him getting MVP votes in 2011 was dumb, but his K/9 rate has been up near 12 for years now. I'd take him over any reliever the Red Sox have. That gives the Yankees two relievers better than the Red Sox best one, which makes it easy for guys to comfortably slot in behind them. The Red Sox could overcome that difference if Farrell didn't follow Girardi's overly rigid bullpen structure, but that's been discussed to death. |

Stole the words (about Robertson) out of my mouth. His stuff is very good and everyone who faces him knows it. The idea that he's some sort of scrub is silly. Have to disagree about Rivera, however. Hits/9 rising to almost 9, K Rate continues to decline - currently below 7.5/9... the rep is still there but the stuff is nowhere near what it was. I think Robertson is better right now. As for the Sox' contingent, as a group they're right up there with any in the AL East.
I really believe the closer tag is near useless and I'm glad that the Sox' aren't afraid to have Uehara, Tazawa, or even Miller take that on every once in a while. But a pitcher with great stuff is still a pitcher with great stuff. Robertson is just that.

No my good friend I am making an educated guess based upon facts. Webster hasn't pitched since the 24th and I can't find any evidence that he's hurt. He's not scheduled to pitch tonight either. Doubront hasn't been the model of consistency and they are technically short a pitcher in the bullpen because they used Morales on Thursday. It would be perfectly logical to call up Webster and either have him start or be the first man just in case Doubront has another awful start. The only other logical pitcher to be called up to fill out the pen would be Wright and he isn't available having gone 5 1/3 last night. It's called offering a conclusion based upon the analysis of given facts or otherwise known as thinking. You should try it some time as opposed to bombthrowing. |

OK. I'm good with the theory. I know they like Felix start last time despite the dingers. Webster's last meltdown makes me think - barring an emergency - he's not up again until they are confident with his control. Don't personally think he's turned that corner but I've been wrong before.

But Guidas being wrong is against the groundrules here at Sox Prospects  I wouldn't blame them if they were disturbed by his meltdown. A solution to that would be to have him be the long reliever on Saturday and keep him up for Sunday. He is realistically the only pitcher they can call up since Wright pitched last night. |

What about Stephen Wright's year (or career for that matter) keeps putting him in these discussions for promotion?
In all my time following prospects I've never come across a player I understood less than Wright.
I wouldn't assume they've kept Webster back to line him up, I feel like they might have just kept him out to try to find the comfort zone that gave him the control he apparently lost against the Twins. But that's just my speculation.

Webster is being held out of select games all season to keep his innings total under control. I don't see him being called up to be used out of the pen.
Not to mention Doubront seems to have tuned a corner.... If they were going to bump anyone it would be Buchholz with the injury issues, but he says he's feeling a lot better.
I suppose they could have Webster on standby in case there's an injury to a starter or Buch isn't fully healed and can't get warm or whatever, but I still think it's unlikely.

He had excellent results in AA and has held his own at AAA. And a spot start or emergency long relief gig is not the same as an earned promotion. |

I didn't understand adding him to the 40-man then and I still don't. And I also don't get excited about a 27 year old pitching well in AA because of his gimmicky pitch, and surprise surprise his results in AAA thus far are just about on line with the rest of his miserable minor league track record. If an ERA north of 4.5 and 6+ walks per nine are indicative of "holding your own" they should give Pete Ruiz a call, at least he strikes people out.

ADDED: Apparently tweaked a groin on the 5th steal last night (doht!). Says he hopes only to miss 1 day.
This blows. Not only was he heating up, you now have a 7-8-9 of Ross-Bradley-Iglesias.
