Kyle Martin: Senior from Texas A&M. According to Callis he was a side arm RHP until last summer when he switched to a 3/4 deliver and showed more velocity, but had less success this season at A&M. Noted, that he is an interesting guy if the Red Sox can fix his delivery.

Maybe he could play 1B. Because SOMEBODY'S got to play 1B in the lower minors.

He has LOOGY written all over him. The Sox have a history of drafting soft throwing pitchers, how many have panned out? The question is why? What do they say the definition of insanity is? Agree 100%

I think you are getting one more underslot senior in the tenth. Then they start to see who they can get to sign in the 11th.

Are there no decent position prospects left?
After the first three, and other than the size of the players (is there an obsession with height here?), this draft doesn't look very impressive.
There seems to be some different philosophy at work now, but I can't tell what it is. It may be that I don't understand the dynamics of this new draft system and how it affects selections.

Every organization needs org guys. They can't all be prospects. These are below slot signs to help with the higher upside prospects. He'll likely fill a useful role within the organization.

I understand the rest of these picks aren't going to be sexy, but I'd like to see the Sox take at least one more gamble with a signability guy. What do they have to lose with wasting a pick #264 on Ryan Boldt? ? (assuming he stays on the board) All of the signability guys will be taken after the 10th round when you can offer overlot money to guys and don't lose your pool money when you don't sign them. Sox are gonna sign most of these 6-10th round guys for way less than slot and use the money to sign an earlier guy like Denny who may require more than slot money or a post 10th round signability guy. Just look at last year's draft strategy.

Ok...so far our 'haul' from #7 draft position seems to be Ball, Stank, Denney and maybe Smith. The rest appear very marginal flotsam on the surface.

You can take any unspent money from the top ten rounds and use that money on players rounds 11-40. The difference is that after the first ten rounds, only the money over 100,000 goes against the pool and you do not lose any money for failing to sign them Say the tenth round pick has a slot value of $150,000, but the Red Sox sign a guy for $10,000. They can then can then draft and sign a better player in the 11th round to a $240,000 contract. If you string enough under slot contracts together, you might be able to get enough to convince a Rudy Tellez to bypass college.

They also have the 7th pick in the 11th round. they guy might be a second or third or fourth round talent. remember, the money that does not go to the top ten rounds can be rolled over into the later rounds.

Callis or Mayo stated in their draft conversation that Boldt had a $2.5M asking price. That seems very unlikely to buy him out of his commitment.

Anybody mad about all this senior signs direct your angry letters at Bud Selig who gave birth to this c.r.a.p.

I just understand how so many people can follow the draft into the 9th+ round but not bother to read even a brief explanation of the rules...or bother to read any of the explanations. People have explained the dynamic way too many times already.

By my calculations, the Red Sox have saved approximately $800,000-850,000 by taking easy signs in picks 6-10. Hopefully a large chunk of that is being saved for a sign-ability guy in round 11.

Anybody mad about all this senior signs direct your angry letters at Bud Selig who gave birth to this c.r.a.p. I find it fascinating. There is a lot of game theory on who will be available when. It makes what was a very boring, straight forward draft into more of a chess match.

I know this system theoretically is designed to even things out between the rich teams and the rest, but, really, are there any poor teams anymore?
I think it is designed more to protect the owners from themselves, to do some price-fixing so the players who really would command a lot more money can't get it.
In any case, in execution it just seems a little ridiculous.

Though as for last year they found one guy that they will sign *likely* overslot and popped him by round 4. I am hoping for a Yaz like signing. I loved the kid Paroubeck like many others liked. Oh well, we'll see what can happen tomorrow.

We can only hope. I would like to think that we will have a better draft than last year's apparent debacle. Our lower minor teams are terrible and seem bereft of prospects so far. To me Webster, De la Rosa, Barnes, Owens and Workman are less than sure things. Ranaudo is partially resurrected. Position players Bradley and Bogaerts will play and perhaps to a lesser extent Brentz. Hope our coffers are full. Papi will likely be done after next year and we will need reinforcements. HELP!

Old friend Chad Jones just got picked. Very cool story, forgot about him in relation to baseball, what a gruesome injury that was. Good for him.
