The team is playing like a champion. They are in a very tough competitive stretch and they are going toe to toe with some excellent teams. Getting into extra inning games. Coming back with a relentless attack. Showing decent pitching. One of the best records in baseball and solid run differential. We are absolutely in this guys. It does appear that we could use another good starter though. Some sort of upgrade. To me having 3 really good starters in the playoffs is extremely important. Our ace in the hole might just be one of these prospect starters stepping it up at year end. It could even be a Webster, RDLR or a Ranaudo. Guys other teams haven't seen. The Beckett phenomena when he was a rookie. Like when Price came up as a rookie in relief. We are absolutely in this thing. I was thinking in may be one of the guys in the minors. But they will probably start to burn out by Semptember let alone October. I think the Red Sox need to go out and get a number 2 to slot behind Clay.

Do you believe the team this year is good enough to win a world series if only they have a Cliff Lee? If you do then you can trade for that one guy. I think this team is very good but not good enough to win a world series. History shows it rarely is the case a single player puts a team over the top. It often is role players acquired at trade deadline that end up having more impact than a front line bat or starter. I think they should hold on to their pieces and see what they have next year. I don't know if you've noticed this but 85 win teams win the World Series all the time now.

I don't like our chances with Middlebrooks and Drew playing the way they are. We have a huge hole at the bottom of our lineup and good teams shut those guys down.
I wouldn't trade Ranaudo. He could be in boston to take a spot in the rotation in 2015 when dempster and maybe lester leave. We need several young arms. I wouldnt bet the farm on Lee.

Lots of teams are in the middle of things in June that aren't in the middle of September. Not to belittle what the Sox have done, because they have done great and beyond reasonable expectations, but the season isn't halfway over yet. The fact that THIS team is the best offensive team in MLB, even at this point in the season, tells you all you need to know about the effect of PED's on the sport in the recent past. This is not a great lineup by any stretch of the imagination.

This is not a great lineup by any stretch of the imagination. Umm... isn't MLB about to suspend like 100 dudes for PED use? Correlation = causation is a weak arguement to begin with, it's worse when the correlation is weak at best. For that matter, it seems to me like balls go as far as they ever did when players square them up, but leaguewide strikeout rates have been skyrocketing the last few seasons. But it's not like pitchers would have any use for drugs that make them stronger or help them recover from injuries faster, so let's not worry about that at all...

Few teams have three OBP machines in the line up as good as Nava, Ortiz, and Pedroia.

To start thinking now about trading for Cliff Lee by giving up 3 prospects is the exact short-sighted thinking that gets teams in trouble. WAY too early to start thinking about being one guy away from winning it all.

When was the last time a Sox starter not Buccholz smells the 7th inning or beyond? it's unbelievable how much they burn this bullpen when Buccholz isn't pitching.

Miller has really turned himself into a pretty great relief pitcher. His stuff was electric tonight, got a ton of swings-and-misses from a very good Orioles lineup. PS: I'm glad Farrell has started to move beyond the one-inning-per-reliever orthodoxy. I think that he can do that with Miller and Tazawa from time to time or out of necessity...and if a low pitch count, Breslow on occasion

Aceves is a spot starter and they don't call him Five inningFelix for nothing. That being said, you're absolutely right. I agree with what other posters have said though. They need to fix or improve the pitchers we have first and only if that fails look elsewhere. Mainly, Demps and lester need to get better.

I was thinking more along the line of being one guy away from staying near the top of the AL. The Red Sox have been fantastic so far this year. I am just concerned with the starting pitching moving forward the rest of the summer. They need another good pitcher who they can count on for 7 innings. As for trading prospects, it's going to happen. Sad? Yes. But you have to give talent to aquire talent and the Red Sox have a number of young arms in the farm system.

Evan Drellich ? evandrellich 50s Red Sox will bring up an arm for tomorrow, Farrell says Stephen Wright would be my guess, so you do not need to make a change on the 40 man roster. You're probably right, but it could conceivably be Britton, right? And also could be a Pawsox reliever who is added briefly before being DFA.

Ciriaco traded to SD for PTBNL, per Gammons.

Geez, I wasn't ready to give up on Middlebrooks, but if it's to be Ciriaco for Headley I guess I can throw in with that.

I'd rather have him be the next Pedro Martinez than Paps , but I suppose either would do in a pinch

With a plus plus change up, a plus fastball, an a pitch that is projected to be plus, I would rather he be starting tonight's game than coming out the pen. Unforunately he is not ready to go five or six innings yet

Just a quick note on the team's bullpen usage:
Tazawa is on pace to throw 74 innings. Or 10 fewer innings than he pitched between AAA and the majors last year. Uehara is on pace to throw 64 innings. He had 65 IP in 2011. It's also the number of innings Joe Nathan threw last year.
Tazawa's 31 IP leads the team in relief innings, but place him in a tie for 32nd in the majors in that category (22nd in appearances.
Basically, this: there is nothing special about their usage.

When the trade was made a lot of people thought RDLR was the centerpiece on our end. He hasn't got enough street cred. His stuff is the closest we've got to Buchholz. They have been taking it slow with him. He may not be the most durable option due to his size but his stuff is excellent. He may not even be really airing it out yet either. I think this is a great time to bring him up. If he does well and we stay in it maybe they can shut him down for a couple weeks and then crank him up again for the PO.

To me it is best to carry 12-13 pitchers at this point in the season. That depends upon having several guys who can back up at several positions but the advantage of having another guy in the pen really helps. It means we don't have to hurt guys by throwing them out there when they are tired or make a short reliever go 3-4 innings in an extra inning game.
I love positional flexibility. It's the craze.

I have been really impressed with Wilson. He looks like a guy who might end up making $10 mil or so in his career. Good for him! He can help a team.

If WMB continues to struggle, I'm not against giving Xander a shot at 3b. Like Baltimore did with Machado. I didn't see any of their games. But, didn't he play a little 3b in the WBC? Middlebrooks only had 163 PA in AAA between the end of 2011 and his hot start in 2012. If Xander stays hot, why not? Have Iglesias at SS. If guys like; Nava and Salty continue to rake. And, a bat like Carp on the bench. It's really getting to the point that there isn't a reason to not play him. If he fails, still have Drew to fall back on. Don't want to use any prospects for a veteran at 3b when we may have an in-house answer.

Was there really a reason to use three separate posts there? As I suggested he's getting paid by the post. I guessed Atlanta for Ciriaco not SD but its not like it matters. We aren't getting anything that will amount to more than depth somewhere.

Flashback to the mid nineties when a 5-11 (and considerable scrawnier) dominican pitcher was put in the bullpen by the dodgers because he was too short to be a starter. The Expos traded a very good starting second basemen to the Dodgers for him, with the Dodgers thinking it was a good deal for an elite bullpen arm. Said pitcher goes on to win 3 cy young awards and post division 2 of the 3 most dominating single seasons by a pitcher in the history of the game, even whithout considering he was pitching a the most offensive heavy division and most offensive heavy league, at the absolute peak of the most offensive heavy era ever. I know he isn't Pedro, but he has the most dominating stuff of anyone we have had since Pedro.
