Do we even offer Bailey a contract next year? Too many good arms coming up to waste a roster spot on that fat bastard.

I wish Farrell would of got thrown out of the game earlier so he didn't make these stupid decisions tonight. Why force Webster thru 6? Why go to Bailey?

So as we watch this game and reflect on the conversations of the past couple weeks just remember - if you're disagreeing with jmei you should probably rethink your position.

I mean, to be fair, Bailey looked good versus Reyes and Bautista and Encarnacion does happen to be one of the better power hitters in the league. But Farrell repeatedly stated that Bailey would work in some lower-leverage situations, and then he throws him into a one-run game against three of the better hitters in the league. I get that Bautista and E5 are righties and so maybe you don't want to go to Miller, but as we discussed in the closer thread, it would be the exact situation you want a manager to use the best right-handed reliever available. Even if that's not Uehara, Tazawa should have been in there.

I agree on Bailey - but throwing Webster out there in the 6th was the right move. The Jays manufactured a run on one single... not much you can do about that.

I just felt that we got some positive from him. Why push it and build on it. He didn't give up the lead.
I guess it time the offense pick up these pictures.

Is there any word on Drew's Injury tonight?

Uehara is something else man, 15 pitches, 13 strikes. If this team needs bullpen help its more arms for middle relief not a "proven" closer who throws "hard."

Uehara at closer is fine by me.
Miller, Breslow, Tazawa are all nice middle relief options. Would be nice to get another RH relief ace, could be via trade or it could be a guy like Rubby or Workman later in the year.

Is there any word on Drew's Injury tonight? @brianmacp: Stephen Drew (hamstring) is hopeful he won't miss more than a day or two. Great win.

As pissed off as I am at Bailey, if this team can get him right his track racord is of a dominant RH reliever. I'd rather take my chances with Bailey (after you get him straightened out) then with a minor leaguer or trade. Farrell just needs to give Bailey a couple games where we're winning or losing by 7.

I think Bailey used to profile as a dominant RH reliever. He had an incredible rookie season, an outstanding second year. Got hurt and slipped a little in his third year. The A's wisely got rid of him. He's been injured and pitched poorly for a year and a half now with Boston. Save a couple of weeks early in the season. With relievers you can't look at what they were 4 years ago. What is he now? Dominant reliever is about the last thing that comes to mind. From the eyeball test, it doesn't even look like he's in great shape. Not that you have to be a reliever. But, he looks rather chunky in uniform. Anyone have a pic of him out of uniform? That would be a better look. www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bailean01.shtml

Bailey has battled injuries and inconsistancy. before his DL stint this year he was pretty damn good. He's still K'ing guys. I have a hard time believing the guy has nothing left as a bullpen arm. Do I want him to be my closer? No. But I think he can be effective especially against RHH. Right now he is suffering from Confidence induced suckitude more than anything else. I would give him some game that are not close, or send him to Pawtucket for a stint. You don't give up on a guy with his track record, who has shown flashes, is still young and still has options. Relivers can be pretty volatile and guys who throw like Bailey don't grow on trees. Fix him.
Is he out of shape? maybe.... how about getting him into shape so you have a pretty good arm for the stretch run.

No, it isn't confidence, it's that when he came off the DL, his fastball velocity was down a notch (92-93 instead of 94-95). He also didn't have any feel for his breaking stuff, so hitters could sit on the fastball. In his latest performance, his FB velocity was back to where it had been previously (touching 96). He didn't throw much of his breaking stuff, but he got Reyes and Bautista to swing through some fastballs. He did leave a fastball over the plate against Encarnacion, who hit it a long way, but the fact that Bailey had his velocity back is a good sign.

The Bailey/Melancon/Hanrahan experience should really inform the discussions about what closer the Red Sox are going to trade for within the next month or so. And by "inform", I mean "end".
