Is there a softer pitcher out there than Felix Doubront?

You never run yourself into an out. What's the point of sending him home with 0 outs and Ortiz coming up next? This game has been extremely frustrating. Also, Napoli strikes out WAYYYYYYY too much.

This 3rd base coach needs a punch in the throat.

I don't know who is at fault (i.e. whether it was a called play), but the safety squeeze with Saltalamacchia at third base and no outs and the top of your order coming up has to rank among the stupider strategic decisions possible in that situation.

Yes. Atta boy, Shane. Weird decision to take out Oliver before facing Ellsbury. Keep it going Petey

I doubt that Diaz bunts of his own volition in his first major-league game, so it's definitely Farrell's fault, since either: (a) he called for the safety squeeze even though Saltalamacchia is one of the slowest players on the team and he had the top of the order coming up or (b) he just meant to sacrifice Iglesias to second and Saltalamacchia was supposed to stay at third, but apparently noone told Salty to stay at third.

Thank god for Victorino. This has been quite a frustrating game.

This would be an enormous victory if they can pull it out.
On another note, I was at the game last night - Toronto fans might be the worst human beings on the planet. I'll never get over when those scums started a Farrell chant while Lackey was holding his arm in pain.

Should the Red Sox be fortunate enough, who would close today? Miller?

It's one thing to strike out, but that's just inexcusable Napoli.

Gift wrap this game. I hope Diaz doesn't play the rest of the year.

Butterfield and Farrell made awful decisions that ended up costing us the game. You don't send Victorino home with no outs (knowing Bautista has a cannon and that Ortiz is up next) and why in the world would you squeeze with runners on 1st & 3rd with no outs? If you don't trust Diaz with the bat in that position, bring in Gomes against Oliver (LHP) and have Snyder take over at 3B after the AB. We ran ourselves out of two innings with the potential of being big.
Napoli needs to seriously start making more contact. He's striking out WAY too much plus he's not hitting for power anymore, it's becoming quite ridiculous.

There are a handful of brutal games every year, this is one of them.

It's funny how the Farrell has a roster that's tailor made for tactical pinch hitting, but he utterly refuses to do it.

LOL at Cafardo calling for the Red Sox to resign Ellsbury. He's so, so bad at his job.

LOL at Cafardo calling for the Red Sox to resign Ellsbury. He's so, so bad at his job. I agree, mostly. I mean I totally agree about Cafardo. I'm really interested to see Ellsbury's second half. In 2011 his power surge really got into full effect in the second half, with 23 of his homers coming after July 1. IF a similar type of situation were to occur this year, it would solidify the idea that Ells would be a really hard guy to replace. I'm not clear on who our corner outfielders are going forward. I'm not sold on Brentz at all. Let's say he ends the year with 763 PA, puts up a slash line of .328/.375/.535 from here til the end. That gives him an OPS of .306/.366/.473/.839 for the year. It's wishful thinking, but not out of the realm of possibilities especially considering his second half numbers in 2011. With his speed and range, moving over to left field probably, I think it would be really hard not to try to work out a contract. That is not an easy bat to replace. Granted, not really a discussion worth having unless he actually does pick it up in the second half.

Granted, not really a discussion worth having unless he actually does pick it up in the second half. 2011 was a huge outlier season so projecting numbers based on anything from that season probably isn't the best approach. For his career Ellsbury has been fairly consistent pre-All Star break vs. post-All Star break despite 2011 and his 07 call up year when he put up huge numbers in a SSS. He's received a bit of a power bump, but nothing that would make me comfortable with projecting anything close to .535 the rest of the way. Career stats: Pre All Star break: .294/.354/.415 Post All Star break: .300/.346/.463

2011 was a huge outlier season so projecting numbers based on anything from that season probably isn't the best approach. You will hear no argument from me. I think the odds are significantly against this occurring. I would just say that while 2011 is an outlier, there isn't exactly a huge track record to contradict it either. I'm just saying we should hold off and look at the whole season of work before LOLing at the idea of retaining him. It is at least possible it ends up being a worthy pursuit. Edit: Also, keep in mind that he has picked it up significantly in June, posting an .890 OPS, but still missing the long balls.
