I'm asking you to forgive me before reading this: If he's playing for the Macon Bacon and he can't do better than that, he's dead meat! That's going on my list along with the Toledo Mud Hens and the Amarillo Sod Poodles among others. If only MLB teams could have names like those!

Neck and neck with the Pirates for worst record. At 13-27, we're a half game back of them, but they have 3 games in hand. Couple of teams at 13-24 (Rangers, Nationals). This final month should be quite a battle. It's just so bleeping odd to be thinking of the season this way. I can't watch a game without hoping they win, but the next morning I look at the standings hoping for a loss. Just make this season go away please!

Yikes. I knew we wouldn't be good, but didn't think we'd be worse than Baltimore. Not a good look. OTOH 1 game back with 57 left!

A couple of items worth considering: first, this update on Eduardo Rodriguez that mentions heart-related complications from covid, and the fact that he is apparently fatigued after throwing about 20 pitches. Second, this discussion with an expert on long-term effects of covid who describes lung damage, shortness of breath, and fatigue as symptoms that have stayed with patients months after contracting the virus. This is mainly people who weren't even hospitalized, and didn't even necessarily have a bad case of the disease. He says that maybe 90% of people who get sick from covid are still feeling symptoms two months later, and there's a good chance that for many the lung damage may be permanent. It's just a reminder that "will they die or not" is not really the right frame for thinking about the covid risks for ballplayers (or the rest of us!). It's easy to imagine how these symptoms could disrupt a player's career. Get well, Eduardo. Given the situation I can't bring myself to hit the "like" button, but thank you for posting this. It IS scary.

The point stands. Getting tested and waiting for two days while you're circulating with live virus negates the entire premise of testing. There's latency to the development of symptoms, sometimes so mild that the person functions normally, and 40% never even show any. That's the case for Soto. That's going to play real headgames with teammates. Part of what makes SARS-COV-2 so insidious is just this variability. MLB needs a better plan. Heard a radio interview re Covid today on WBUR in Boston (a local program I think, not NPR) and under questioning it was stated that an infected person can test negative from 0 to 5 days before testing positive. That's true even if symptoms are already present. They referred to specific examples of this happening. Sorry I can't give better sourcing, I heard it while driving. It's a bit scary though.

the whole world seems surreal. There won't be CoVid normality until herd immunity and who knows what that will look like and when that will be. On a baseball note, I am starting to feel terribly depressed with the realization that Mookie Betts is not going to be on our squad From everything I've seen there won't be heard immunity. Just like the Flu, you might have it for that flu season, but it doesn't last long-term. I've seen from a couple of sources recently that Covid, unlike the flu, is a slow mutating virus. It is much larger than flu viruses (which one would think would allow it to mutate faster) but it has a protein (I think) that serves as a sort of spell-checker when RNA strands are copied. My non-medical grade understanding is there's a good chance that when a vaccine is available it will be effective against strains of this virus across many seasons. Nobody's going to know for sure until it happens though.

I played on a field with no LF fence and also never hit a HS home run. Going to leave that out there so folks can imply causation. You were far better than I was, Chris. I couldn't make the little league team and was assigned to the "farm team". I wasn't even a starter there!. I had a great stance at the plate though. The first 10 or so AB's of the season I walked every time. After that struck out. No hits ... ever! At a much later stage of life I took up running. I was slow but I could run a long way without tripping on myself. Qualifying (barely) and finishing the Boston Marathon a few times is far and away the high point of my life athletically.

Moncada turns 25 next month (note he's six months younger than CJ Chatham, for reference). There isn't much reason to think that his season was an anomaly. Also I was going to compare him to Devers last year then realized that Devers is two freaking years younger than even Moncada. Good lord I'm glad they didn't trade him. In addition to his obvious talent, as a fan it's just so much damned fun to watch a player who appears to be having so much damned fun playing the game. Hope we got to do that at some point this year.

That's a riot. I really love it when really smart people do really dumb things. It gives me delusions of competence.

The point of the call was bringing together the heads of businesses that sell tickets to events in large venues on regular basis. The point of the call wasn't to discuss the merits of the on-field competition of the legitimate competitive sports. Also Trump has a long-time relationship with WWE, with two of the early Wrestlemanias being held at Trump Plaza, his appearance in storyline at a more recent one about a decade ago, and Linda McMahon being current head of the SBA. If nothing else he was doing his friends a solid while perhaps stroking his own ego. In other words, no point to discussing the "is WWE a sport?" question in this context. I understand all that, and I knew that was the thinking. Demolition derby brings a lot of crowds also. By having that list published, it throws them all in the same category by my way of thinking. They could just as easily have had a second call with pure entertainment venues. Personally, I would love to see WWE paired with the Metropolitan Opera. Sheesh! And I thought I'd wandered off topic! :-)

Do you think that you might be working a bit overtime here twisting the pretzel on the definition of sport vs entertainment? Yup WWE draws crowds which we currently want to avoid to the greater good...but geez a sport? As you implied, it's a well choreographed, pre-programmed, result-determined carnival event. For some it is entertainment..on the level of a vaudville show. I get that. But a sport? Ahh, no. As to whether and under what conditions baseball will be played this year, it's anybody's guess. But I think that we will have a lost season...no games, at least with people in the stands. That's terribly sad especially for us oldsters, but a necessary sacrifice for the longer term, greater good IMO. With a vaccine, we can hope for a full 2021. I always viewed it as entertainment but entertainment by some fantastic athletes. That's a pretty fine line. Is golf a sport ? My take on this has always been that there are two components of sport. One is athleticism and the other is competition. WWe doesn't have the latter. I understand your question about golf. It requires certain physical skills (which I only wish I possessed!). It's arguable. I do think of it as a sport though. Most, though not all golfers are in very good physical condition. The same could be said about baseball players. I have more trouble with events that require athleticism and involve competition, but in which the average person cannot determine the winner by watching. There are numerous Olympic events like this in which art is as important as athleticism in determining the winner. One might as well put piano competition in the Games. To me the most annoying of those judged events is ski jumping because I don't see any reason for it. It would be quite easy to say the winner is the contestant who touches the ground furthest down the hill regardless of which part of said contestant hits first. Instead the winner needs to have style. I respectfully call BS!

And actually, Esplin entered a few weeks ago when we learned that Daniel Bakst had retired. At least, I think! Correct as usual, sir!

I think we have to start realizing that MLB is unlikely to play any games this season. Obviously a whole bunch of things to iron out financially and service time/ free agent wise. But does any of this really matter. It’s time society starts looking at what is really important. Family, health, food, friendship, community. This will be a good lesson for humanity. Baseball will be back, and when it does I hope we all appreciate it for what it is, but remember what is most important. Yes! As a friend of mine pointed out on FB the other day, if the worst of your problems is boredom and only seeing your family on video chats, you've got a helluva lot to be thankful for. I'm lucky enough to be in that category ... so far.

Massachusetts: "Baker closes Mass. public schools, prohibits gatherings of 25 people or more, bans on-premise consumption at bars, restaurants" Per the Boston Globe Yup. So much for St. Paddy's Day.

Bad enough for all these people to be home from work, but with no March Madness, no NBA, no NHL, no MLB, ... Hell with toilet paper, I'm surprised there hasn't been a panic run on liquor stores.
(BTW, if you just bought 140 rolls of TP just in case you get quarantined for 14 days, you should have seen the doctor long ago.)

It hit my town in MA yesterday with 2 cases. The schools are closed today (the victims had kids). The Boston Marathon, which starts here and is the oldest annual marathon in the world, is still scheduled for 4/20. From what I hear, the Boston Athletic Association is still planning to go forward with it but I doubt it's completely in their hands (which I hope are well washed!). We all understand how this is affecting the economy, including sports, but it's also squashing people's dreams in many cases without their having been sick. Weddings etc. Years ago, decades actually, I was working in a minor volunteer role for the BAA before Marathon Day. I happened to be walking through the registration area and saw a young African women given her number. She took it with a smile, turned to leave, but couldn't go on. She fell to her knees, completely in tears, of utter joy. Like many around the world, coming to Boston for this race was a lifelong dream and it was now official! I know there are more touching stories but this one hits me as a former volunteer and former runner (often in the same year). I hope they can get the race in but OTOH I know from experience what running 26.2 miles can do to one's immune system in the subsequent few days. [/off topic]

Denyi Reyes is listed in transactions as outrighted to Pawtucket on 2/3, but he's listed on the rosters and the rankings as in Portland.

Not sure who this is directed at but if it's me, are you seriously arguing that you think there's no correlation between improved strength and conditioning in athletes and the prevention of sports related injuries? Nice try but you’re changing the argument. You are conflating conditioning and strength with weight. News flash: you can be 200 pounds and not be strong or well- conditioned. Sale has never been a particularly heavy (bulk wise). That doesn’t mean he’s ever entered a season poorly conditioned or lacking in strength. Furthermore: adding twenty plus pounds to pitcher (especially one who is no longer in his teens and early 20s) is likely cause changes in his mechanics, which may increase not decrease chances of injury. I'm not a doc and I'm not going to pretend to be. (There is at least 1 doc who's a frequent poster here and maybe he'll chime in.) As a layman though it seems to me you're right that conditioning and weight are not something that go hand in hand in either direction (except at the extremes). OTOH if you are at a given level of conditioning and you lose weight due to an illness like the flu, the chances are pretty good that your conditioning has decreased as well. I think that was the point wk24 was trying to make.

Heyman is reporting that talks between the Sox and Dodgers are progressing. I think we'll see the trade completed today, pending medicals for the new piece(s) of the deal. I think I've heard this said in this thread 100 times in the last few weeks!!!

I think you might have missed one at the start of December when we did Perales and Cruz. I gotta remember to give you a heads up, sorry. No problem, that's up to me to notice. You guys are busy enough. I saw the update on 12/1, though nothing much happened on that one. Was there an update later in the month?

Again no changes in the top 20, but a few changes lower down.
Details
Summary:
- Jonathan Arauz makes his SP debut at # 25.
- Nick Longhi, last ranked # 13 in July of '17 before his move to the Reds organization, is back and in the top 60 again at # 37.
- Jhonathan Diaz fell from 38 to 41.
- Luis Perales, one of the "future contract" guys, had been ranked at # 60 for a few months and fell out off the list in November, but he's back now at # 43!
- Juremi Profar debuts at # 53.
- Robinson Leyer is ranked for the first time at 54.
- Devlin Granberg, Kole Cottam, Osvaldo De La Rosa, and Daniel Bakst all fell 3 spots, now at 55 - 58.
- Nathanael Cruz, at # 60, is the 3rd future contract player on the list.
Quiz: Who is the player (there's only one) who was ranked last time (11/1) who moved up this week?
