The most common flaw in most offseason discussions is thinking that last year’s win/loss record is the best starting point for projecting next season’s performance. Anchoring to some sort of true talent measure is a more useful heuristic.

“We have a really good team” just doesn’t drive engagement this early in the season.

It’s also “up to $4.4 million” which suggests a chunk of that is incentive-based. For a rotation player and core special teamer, that’s a pretty team-friendly team.

The quality of the ball movement on this team is unreal.

If you were to draw up the ideal big next to Tatum and Brown, you’d probably lead with (1) a good multipositional, versatile defender, (2) low usage and moves the ball well and (3) ability to space the floor either horizontally (by shooting threes) or vertically (by being a lob threat). That describes Horford, R. Williams and G. Williams to a tee. There aren’t really any big men available who fit those characteristics and are good rebounders, so to add rebounding, you have to subtract something else. I’m not sure there’s enough of a net gain to make it worthwhile. Besides, plan A is almost certainly to see how Rob Williams fits before looking at external options.

Professional sports athletes are generally insanely competitive and generally surround themselves with insanely competitive people (including their agents). Not a surprise that they are psychologically primed to pursue the best contract that they can, especially since there’s a tendency to view the size of your contract as reflecting how much respect you deserve.

I am going to ask folks to move on from the ref discussion. No one is going to change anyone else’s mind and it is getting personal. Thanks.

It's not the refs, it's the execution tonight. Even this last minute, catching the ball on the 2 instead of letting it go into the end zone is just a terrible football play. They deserved to lose this game. Eh, you need the home run play there and Marcus Jones gives you a better shot of that than having the ball at the 20.

Good teams win games like that. This is not a good team.

Just a brutal sack there. No one was open but need to throw it away there.

I’m not one for the ref conspiracy stuff, but there have been a few big missed calls on Minnesota and some 50/50 calls that were called on New England that have materially affected the game. Donaghy level stuff Eh, you misunderstand my point. There are a lot of coin flip calls in any given game. They just happen to have gotten a lot of bad flips.

This secondary has always been a little smoke and mirrors, but the pass rush and the bad QBs they’ve played has helped cover it up.

I don’t understand that Hunter Henry call at all. Did the ball even touch the ground? Yeah I'm unable to get past this one, I understand the rule and have gotten use to it but...that didn't hit the ground? Even all the announcers repeatedly said while watching on slow-mo that his hand was underneath and then the ball comes loose as he turns. That is unequivocally, by the rules, a catch Ball did hit the ground eventually. His hand was under it as first but as it rotated, it scraped the ground.

Eh, I don’t really want Bloom making moves to assuage Red Sox fan angst. It sucks having to wait what seems like forever for the big moves to be announced, but that’s the rhythm of MLB offseasons these days.

Eh, feels like we should calibrate expectations somewhat. If Mac is even an averagish quarterback long term, that’s a great pick. This is ultimately still a developmental year for both him and the team in general. If they come out of it with a competitive season and a few long-term building blocks, that’s a successful season. Stevenson and Duggar continue to look like future Pro Bowlers, and, while it hasn’t been linear, guys like Strange and Jack Jones and Thornton and Marcus Jones still look very promising.

Consensus of the film review is that the offensive struggles in the Jets game were more on the offensive line than the QB. From a long-term point of view, that’s good news.

I should maybe plug that Patreon supporters get full individual rankings from each of the site staff, so if that’s something you’re interested in, consider joining. Wait, how is this different than the annual drive? If I knew there was Patreon, I would've been hitting it monthly instead of dropping it all once a year (if that's preferred). www.patreon.com/soxprospects

I don’t know that I would call a .500 season in which they were in playoff contention for most of the first half before being derailed by injuries a disaster. Disappointing, certainly, and illustrative of poor player evaluation during the offseason (most notably regarding JBJ and Dalbec) and a decision to keep the team together at the deadline that looks shortsighted just a week later. But disaster? Nah.
