Also, saying you have "sources" without providing any context is crap. What kind of sources? Do they have direct knowledge of the negotiations? Is it an agent who says he's heard something second-hand? Is it Alex Verdugo's mother's third-cousin, twice removed? Context matters. No offense, but aren't you the one posting tweets from "padrenymous"... btw, I like those posts

I'll care more when another reporter has this. I don't follow mlb rumors much. Does he have a history of headline grabbing but unsupported rumors? Or are you just looking for confirmation from other sources? Thanks!

I'd say 2011 was a lot worse. In 2011, the Greatest Red Sox team evah, Champs, that team had injuries and fluke things like Steve Blass syndrome happen to that team. This team was more talented than the 2011 team. They won 108 games a year ago. Like they were the greatest team ever, not just a saying before they fell off the earth this year. Yeah, this comes down to whether you think being out of it early makes the season worse or getting knocked out at the last second via epic collapse makes it worse. Pedro, you hate the slow torture. I get that. Personally, I vote for 2011 as being way worse. I remember that night so vividly. Just awful.

PBP guy doing ok. Not Orsillo quality but an improvement nevertheless. Is DOB just getting a break or was he suspended? He's doing some games for the ACC Network. Will miss quite a few games in Sept too. From the Globe: "NESN play-by-play announcer Dave O’Brien will miss nine games in the coming weeks to call football games for the ACC Network. Tom Helmer, who has done studio work at NESN, will work the Rockies series with Todd Walker. Alex Faust, who calls Los Angeles Kings games, will handle Sept. 7 game against the Yankees and the Sept. 14-15 series at Philadelphia. Will Fleming, who has had games on the radio side this season, will have the Sept. 20-21 games at Tampa Bay and Pawtucket Red Sox broadcaster Mike Monaco will be on the Sept. 27-28 games against the Orioles."

And so it begins......... If the Sox pulled it off, it would be just as great as the 2004 comeback. eh, no.

Listening to this conversation between Walker and OB - "Hernandez can hit lefties." "So can Brock Holt". "I guess Cora just wants to get Owings into a game so he doesn't sit for too long". WTF is that? And this is a big game? Ugh. Also a little surprised they didn't let BJ swing with 2 strikes

Could last week be the low point and this team and is going to show starting today? Maybe? I'm all for this, but unfortunately we also need a few other teams (Oakland and TB) to struggle.

I remember when JBJ was one of my favorite prospects. He was slow to adjust to each level, but when he clicked he was so good. I thought he could be a guy who could be truly special at 27. I hate every day I see him in a Red Sox uniform. Uh, you just see him throw out Billy Hamilton at third?

Given that Sox pitchers are worse than average this year, the argument here must be that Sox pitchers are disproportionately affected by the new baseballs, right? Are there some reasons why that might be the case? For example, Porcello and Sale (recently at least) are both getting hammered, but they have pretty different pitching profiles. I think HR suppression is almost completely random now and it's the main thing that matters. When any batter can hit any pitch for a HR no matter who the batter or pitcher is and no matter how good or bad the pitch was, what else can it be? I don't know. It'd be nice to see (and maybe it exists) a deep dive on the impact of the new baseballs on different pitchers. Chris Sale's HR/FB rates are insane this year (19.6%). That's 70th out of 74 qualified pitchers. Last year, out of starters with at least 130 IP, Sale was ranked 10th in HR/FB at 9.3%. Porcello's HR/FB has actually dropped year over year (2018 = 13.8%, 2019 = 12.8%).

Cashner just isn't very good. This is just what baseball is now. If they don't fix the baseball I won't be watching many more years. It's garbage. Every bad pitch- is a home run and every great pitch can also be a home run. It doesn't even matter who the pitcher is.

I get this, but you're also playing for the games after the one-game wild card too... With the high prices, being cautious with only the one-game wild card.

The idea that Casas or Mata shouldn't be included in a deal for a player like Syndergaard or other elite non-rental talent is wildly over rating their value imo. I get what you’re saying, but I disagree. It all depends on control years. Syndergaard has only two left after this year, and his arb costs are going to jump. He’s also been completely middling this year. The Sox need to save $ for Mookie and arb raises/extensions for guys like Beni, Devers, Rodriguez, maybe even Vazquez in a couple years. Thor’s great, but I don’t think they “need” him, and I wouldn’t sacrifice payroll fluidity (which they do need) for the upgrade he’d (hopefully) provide. Mata especially, and Casas (in 2-3 years, when they’ll need a JDM replacement) fit their timeframe and fill actual needs, specifically a 5th starter at no cost, and a possible middle-order bat at 1b. Sure, maybe the Sox don't need Syndergaard, but he was talking about it from the Mets perspective...there's no way they make a trade with the Sox without Casas or Mata in the mix.

A lot of teams are struggling with their bullpens. That's what happens when home runs go from 1.1487 per game in 2018 to 1.3790 per game in 2019. Runs are also up 0.38 per game. (per team) True, but the Yankees, Rays, Twins, Indians, Astros, and Athletics all have top 10 bullpens in MLB with respect to ERA and FIP. Tough competition...

redsoxfan2, I thought your idea for a 'the math of the red sox' thread was a good idea. Consistent updates on playoff odds, etc. Useful. Man oh man, for some reason you have decided to entrench yourself in this doom and gloom narrative. If you're just perpetuating it because you've dug yourself so deep that you feel you need to stay committed to that viewpoint, we are all offering you a chance to come up to the surface. Join the light. It's nice up here!

Did the laser also hit Edelman in the hands? It hit all of the coaches that face the Pats in the eye all week while preparing for the Pats. Gold.

So Kimbrel's blown save allowed Giles to get hammered, Moreland and JBJ to homer, Xander and Mookie to get hits..... See - there is a method to Kimbrel's madness (ha ha) Gents, learn from this. Our man ‘67 has brilliantly found a silver lining. Perhaps another silver lining...after this game DD decides to go get bullpen help?

I didn’t want to jinx, so I waited... Giles sucks. Karma dictates that Toronto will receive zero value for Osuna. I feel like the bad karma should be directed towards Houston...
