Looks like Sharp in Portland tonight. Will be interesting to see what they do in the rotation there with 6 starters. Sharp was the one I thought might head to the 'pen. Could Liu or Gambrell be among the short list of the next movers? It's hard for me to fully visualize because the rosters aren't updated yet (fairly, as they have yet to play games with the new rosters) but they both seem like some of the most likely candidates now that the huge wave of semi-obvious guys has come through. And I doubt Jake Faria is really blocking anyone. I was going to say that 50 innings was too soon to move Gambrell after he’s already been promoted once this season, but Drohan only got 58 innings in Portland before he got bumped to Worcester. Situations aren’t the same. Drohan was dominating Portland and Gambrell is just pitching well. But maybe they look at Gambrell’s lost time to injury and want to push him. I highly doubt that though. He’s probably in Portland for the rest of the season. Maybe Liu though.

First career home run for Gerardo Rodriguez. Batting .351 with a .894 OPS as a 17 year old catcher.

Has Wyatt Olds been fixed? Over his last 3 games (13 IP), he’s only walked one batter. I’m questioning whether he’s just taking advantage of poor FCL swing decisions by the batters, but he’s also only hit one batter in that time compared to 11 HBPs in Portland.

“Yet we’re 2-10 against the Pirates, Rockies, White Sox, and Cardinals, all of whom are putrid this year.” — To be fair, the Pirates were decent when the Sox played them (feels like a lifetime ago). It was the second series of the year. Hard to say whether they were decent or just off to a hot start. They played well for awhile but the underlying metrics of the team weren’t all that good.

They have. 4. Crews 6. Skenes 11. Langford 19. Jenkins 22. Clark 53. Dollander 54. Meyer 73. Lowder 85. Wilson 89. Troy 95. Shaw Going into the draft, BA had Veel ranked 10th on their draft prospect list, ahead of Shaw and Troy who come in at the back end of the top 100. Did they re-adjust since the draft? Is that why Veel isn’t on there? Glass half full says that he’s just outside the top 100 which is nice.

No pre-excuses. Have to beat sub-.500 teams in the coming weeks to be real. If they can beat the Rangers and the Blue Jays, they can beat the Cubs. You’d think so. Yet we’re 2-10 against the Pirates, Rockies, White Sox, and Cardinals, all of whom are putrid this year. And yet, we’re 12-1 against the Yankees and Blue Jays who are ahead of us in the standings. It’s part of the maddening behavior of the team this year. They beat the good teams and fall apart against the bad.

Coming out of the break the Sox are going to be facing the following teams.
Cubs 42-47 A’s 25-67 Mets 42-48 Braves 60-29 Giants 49-41
They Sox could come out how with that weak schedule and push into a Wild Card spot before the Braves and Giants series. If they come out flat against poor competition and then get smoked by the Braves and Giants, they’ll likely sell. They’re close enough that they could buy or sell at this point.
My problem with being a buying team is that this team is so damn bipolar. They lost 7 out of 10, then won 6 in a row, then lost 7 out of 8, and then won 8 out of 9 going into the break. They’re not consistent enough. Could they stay hot coming out of the break? Sure. Could they lose 8 out of 10 against poor competition? Also equally viable.

Armando Sierra is having a nice bounce back after a very slow start. One of the more interesting DSL guys from last year made his stateside debut this season. He’s a triple short of the cycle today and hit his first stateside home run. OPS up to .850. Good K and BB numbers.

Those two signings make me really hesitant to think that Call or Orloski is going to sign. Mike’s first round estimates had Rose and Wehunt going for 30k and 30k not 150k and 100k. (Not a shot at Mike. His guesses are usually spot on). That’s a big difference though, 190k to be exact. If that money doesn’t come back from somewhere else, I don’t see the late round high school guys taking that.

Draft signing are starting to come in. Braves and Angels signed their 1st rounders to announced deals and the Braves added a couple more.

I did some looking into the timeline for signings and debuts last year to see if there was anything to notice. Signing bonus information started trickling in during the week following the draft, with official contracts being signed in two bunches: one on the 26th (7 days after the end of the draft) and one on the 29th (10 days after).
The draft class can be broken down into three groups: high school hitters, college pitchers, and Chase Meidroth. Meidroth was the only college hitter that they drafted last year. The college pitchers was the easiest to describe. They drafted 13 of them. Six pitched during the 2022 season and seven didn’t. Some due to injuries and I would guess some due to enough innings already. The pitchers that did make an appearance all got their first innings between August 16th and 20th; about two to three weeks after signing. They all made only two pitching appearances. The top high school hitters (Romero, Coffey, and Anthony) debuted on August 9th-three weeks after the draft. Brannon followed four days later. Brannon and Coffey spent the whole time in Florida, but Romero and Anthony moved up to Salem after three weeks. Meidroth was his own special case. He made it to game action in Florida on August 5th and was playing in Salem on August 9th.
The Red Sox ended up with a little bit of a different group this year. 2022 saw 13 college pitchers, 5 high school hitters, and one college hitter. Their top five rounds went 3 high school hitters, two college pitchers, and one college hitter. This year, the Sox have done 6 college hitters, 4 high school hitters, 11 college pitchers, and 1 high school pitcher. 2023’s top five rounds were three college bats, two high school bats, and two college pitchers.
The interesting thing about this year is that the draft is 8 days earlier than it was last year, while the season still ends the same time. This will give the draftees another week of time this year. For the pitchers that do make an appearance, it won’t mean much. 3 appearances rather than 2, likely. For the hitters, it will have a bigger impact. I would expect the college hitters to get up to Salem quickly. Meidroth got 85 PAs in Salem and barring injury or contract issues, Zeel, Campbell, and Riemer could easily surpass that.

Couple of things to remember as the picks come in.
Don’t freak out if you don’t like the 1st rounder. Everyone had a cow when the Sox picked Nick Yorke and that worked out pretty well.
The teams have different boards than the media. MLB, Baseball America, and Perfect Game have great lists but they’re not what the teams go by. A guy could be 75th on MLB’s list and the Sox could see him as a top 20 guy.
You don’t always get your best guy in the first round. Let the draft go and fully come into picture before you start judging it. The Sox went under slot on Mikey Romero and that let them get Roman Anthony in 2022. They did the same in 2020 when going under on Nick Yorke let them get Blaze Jordan.
The Sox have been pretty good at this drafting thing the last few years. Hits on pretty much every first rounder (Yorke, Mayer, Romero), but also getting guys later in the draft. Drohan (5th), Hickey (5th), Dobbins (8th), Brannon (9th), I. Coffey (10th), Troye (12th), Guerrero (17th), Sikes (18th) have all made some sort of impact being Day 2-3 draft picks in the last couple of years.
I saw a tweet about this one and haven’t really looked into it, but this is supposed to be a really good and deep draft especially on the college level, thanks to COVID. A lot of the guys that elected not to go into the draft out of high school in 2020 due to the shortened 5 round COVID draft are becoming eligible for drafting for the first time since then. Makes it a deeper and better college draft than normal. Not sure about the validity on that one though.

The Trout injury is going to push the Angels into desperation. They need to make the playoffs to try to convince Ohtani to re-sign. Personally I think he’s as good as gone, but you don’t let Shohei Ohtani go without the biggest fight of your life. Either trade him now or go all in. They’re three games out of the last wild card spot. They don’t have a lot to work with in the farm, but I’d imagine they use whatever they can. The thing is that Adam Duvall isn’t going to be the move they make to replace Mike Trout. They need to make a big splash. Duvall could be a piece they go for. Paxton too. But I’d be waiting for a really big move.

Brooks Brannon is a very vocal teammate. He’s sitting in the dugout screaming after Coffey makes a nice play at third.

Perales struck out the side in the fifth. Gives him twelve through five innings. One of the best pitching performances I’ve ever seen.

7 strikeouts for Perales through 3 innings, 13 swinging strikes. ADD 9 strikeouts through 4 innings, 17 swinging strikes. He’s been filthy. It’s even more impressive considering the feels like temperature here is in the triple digits. He’s got a pre-inning ritual where he scribbles something on the foul line before he goes to the mound. Not sure what he writes.
