Id take that and think having Willis as our pitching coach could be a plus. Like you said he's cheap with upside but we would still need to sign or trade for that top tier guy.

Why trade and hope to re-sign Cueto? Figure odds are low anyone two months from free agency is going to sign.
Red Sox Stats tweet
Globe: The Red Sox are "all-in" on Cueto, hoping to trade and sign. They have been in talks for Carlos Carassco, Sonny Gray & with the Mets. 1:15pm - 25 Jul 15

After last night "performance", Fat Pablo is now exactly worth a -1 WAR...Hanley on the other hand is OBPing .309! Four more years of this is gonna get me killed... Out of the 162 players who qualify on fangraphs Hanley and Sandaval are 161 and 162 in WAR. Hanley can at least hit but we need to get out from Panda's contract somehow.

So of the 162 players who qualify for fangraphs WAR Ben locked up the 161st and 162nd rated players this offseason. He needs to get out from under Sandavals contract. Sign or trade for a RH 3B and let him split time with Holt. Chris Johnson could be had and guys like Freese and Uribe are FAs. Everyone but Cherington saw 4 straight years of declining numbers but as soon as he got hot in October we heard rumblings we were going after him. 2/3s of the way through the season he's sitting at career lows in OBP and slugging and that's getting away from a pitchers park in SF.

in Speier's blog he said teams were asking a lot about Holt and some said he'd get more than Zobriest.

Yan Gomes is still pretty young they may not even want Swihart. I think Margot then Owens or Johnson and another piece is close if we take back Bourne or Swisher.

Id trade Margot and Johnson plus another lesser prospect for him in a second. To me this seems like a Dodger trade with Puig though.

“@ken_Rosenthal: Sources: #Dodgers, #RedSox among many teams asking on #Indians’ starters. CLE not motivated to act; would need to be “very compelling deal.”” I wonder what Willis thinks of Bauer? He'd be the cheapest to acquire and still has upside.

I've seen some rumors the Nats are interested in Zobriest and even Chapman. Both would be expensive but maybe a Holt/Koji deal would be cheaper. Would a Joe Ross be too much to ask for a Koji/Brock combo? Nationals have a few interesting prospects they'd be a nice target. The Nats rotation is in transition with Zimmerman and Fister free agents after the year and Strasburg after next season. For that reason I don't think they trade Ross and maybe not even Cole who's more of a back end guy. I think you'd be looking at Feede or Lopez + and I'd try to pry Victor Robels from them. He could be a top 15-30 prospect next year.

I'm going to hold judgment on this and think/hope Ben is just doing his due dillagence and that a contender probably tops our deal anyway. I wouldn't hesitate to deal Margot/Owens types but I want a younger/cheaper starter coming back. A Carasco or Salazar from Cleveland type.

“@jeffpassan: Sources: Cleveland has been willing to listen on pitching, particularly Carlos Carrasco. May be a match there with Toronto. They've talked.” This is a guy id trade Margot+ for.

Sounds like we could match up well with SD. Marrero, JBJ and Margot. Although I don't think I'd trade Margot for Ross. I don't trust SD pitchers. I could see an Alonso trade though since we could use a 1B.
Rosenthall tweet #Padres biggest needs: SS and CF.

While Swihart would be fair I don't do that. They can't get rid of Chris Johnson id try to take on his salary to back up 3b/1B and keep our top guys out.

I agree but he's a former top 5 prospect who has a few good years under his belt and signed to a team friendly deal for 5 more seasons. I think they'd ask for Swihart but I'd try to deal from Vazquez, Johnson and JBJ types.

KCs Jason Vargus has a UCL tear. Maybe Miley would be a fit with Holt.

Curious what type of starter we could get this offseason with a hypothetical Margot plus one of Johnson or Owens package. Again not whether you would trade Margot but if/When he's on the market what type of starter would you expect?

“@bradfo: Joe Kelly will start for Red Sox tomm. Miley on Wed. Everybody else pushed back” I'm guessing he gets on a run and wins the Cy Young.

Has there been any whispers about Hanley moving to 1B? I remember seeing last week a report saying the front office thinks he could pick it up fairly quickly. Would 3B be out of the question for a year until Papi retires?
I've thought about what Miley could bring back as well. Good back end pitcher but I think next year a 4/5 combo of E Rod/Owens/Johnson/Wright could be similar. Porcello a #3 with two better top end guys. A FA and trade.

Good write up AmFox.
Someone like De Aza could be paired with Holt if KC wants a cheap option to replace Gordon. I'm still waiting on the compensation picks to be assigned and hope some of the bigger starter pitchers are traded so we wouldn't lose a pick if we sign one. I was also thinking Buch could be an Aug trade.
How far would you be willing to go to trade Sandaval? Any contracts match up? Would he and Shields be a wash? Melvin Upton? If Cincy wanted to get out of Votto long term bad enough would you trade Panda for Votto? 8 years and just under $200 million but he's going to hit and get on base. Maybe something like the Fielder- Kinsler trade where Detroit is paying $30 million over the last 5 years.

Finnigan seems like a good start but man I'd rather have a different return than a LHP. We could always deal from a strength though and maybe KC gets a competitive balance pick when they come out which should be soon.
