I don't think anyone's trading a top tier ace. I don't think the Mets are touching their top guys, Oakland is probably a year or two away on Gray, Sale and his contract is the type of guy you build around if your Chicago and the Indians didn't budge on Carasco with rumors of a very good offer from the Jays. It's either catch lighting in a bottle or go get one on the FA market.
I'd make a run at Price first then Cueto. I wouldn't worry about going over the luxury tax bc we have guys coming off the books soon. I'm hoping Sandaval has a good offseason and rebounds next year and someone bites on a 3 year deal when Moncado should be ready. Maybe Benintendi takes the Conforto path and his league minimum salary replaces Castillios $10+ million in 2017. Dom hasn't been afraid to trade MLB pieces in the past for help elsewhere.

I'm really anxious to see how Kelly does the rest of the year. He's been pitching pretty well lately and if he keeps it up I think he sticks in the rotation. Porcello seems to be saying he is going back to his 2014 mix too.
I'm starting to think it goes something like 1 FA signing / Trade 2 Buch 3 Porcello 4 E Rod 5 Kelly
Dom keeps saying power arms so I think Miley and Owens could be on the block. Who knows maybe Buch could be traded as well.

The way Margot is hitting in AA I'm not sure he could headline a deal right now. At least not for type of starter we need.

Did anyone notice who was standing off to the side while Butterfield was instructing Hanley? Why it was Blake Swihart, wearing a 1st baseman's glove. I noticed that as well.

So Joe Kelly?
Edit for Edes tweet
Scouts absolutely raving about Joe Kelly last night. One scout who saw him in May said he could not believe the transformation. 6:39pm - 25 Aug 15
Another scout raved about Kelly maintaining his velocity into the late innings and called his secondary stuff "plus-plus"

I think it was Bowden and Duquett on MLB radio yesterday saying if scouts think his tools vs top international pitching (95+ MPH/breaking balls) are similar to Kangs a posting fee would be in the $12-15 million range and then 12-15 a year on a five year deal.

As someone who wanted Sandaval dumped at the deadline I've flip flopped on him and Hanley. If we got rid of Panda we'd need a 3B but Hanley doesn't have a position. Keep Panda and try like hell to get him into shape. If he does and gets back to above average in both areas we could be looking at an asset on a three year deal going into next offseason when Moncada could be ready and possible at 3B.
Dump Hanley and go Betts/JBJ/Castillo.

I think we struck gold with Benintendi. In the a law/Speier podcasts linked in the Dombroski thread Law brought up the fact after the draft scouts from two teams told him he was the best hitter in it and we're trying to keep it a secrete leading up to it. Also it looks like his lack of track record played into our favor. I forgot who the talking head was but they mentioned if he'd have had a good cape summer or another sec year for scouts to judge him he'd have been in consideration for 1-1.

There are four viable options for next year. C) Trade him for a better 1B, by a combination of eating salary and adding prospects. You would think about a swap for two absolute studs with insane contacts, Miguel Cabrera and Joey Votto (I mean "think about" literally; I'm too busy to even consider whether that could be a good idea or is doomed to be a terrible one). There are many other viable candidates. I've thought about a Votto trade. The Reds are rebuilding and he isn't going to be on their next competitive team. A Hanley for Votto trade takes about 130ish million off their books and maybe more if Rameriez rebounds and they can trade him. There's only a few teams who could take on Votto and while paying him $25 million as a 39 year old isn't great I think he will hit and get on base the majority of the contract. According to fangraphs he has been worth over $40 million a year the last few years minus the one he missed time.

They were just talking about Park in MLB radio. They said due to Kangs success if scouts think Park looked similar vs international pitching (95+ mph and breaking balls) he probably gets a $12-15 million posting fee and something in that range a year for five years.

A Porcello rebound would go a long way in fixing the 2016 team.
Gammo tweet Scout watching Rick Porcello:"After 2d inning, he was really good. Two fastball/curveball/changeup mix, excellent change." Mix they want

How far would you go to get rid of Hanley and put his money towards another upgrade? Would you package him with a prospectt if a team took his money and gave a little back? This was from Gammons article a few weeks back and I can't help but think that AL west team talking about Vazquez is LAA. Who could use Hanley. www.gammonsdaily.com/peter-gammons-depth-and-defensive-upgrades-fuel-surging-blue-jays/Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington has singled out defense as his primary focus on improving his team, which is why they will give full shots at Jackie Bradley, Jr., Mookie Betts and Rusney Castillo in the outfield, await the return of Christian Vazquez (whom one AL West team considers the best defensive catcher in the league) behind the plate and figure how Hanley Ramirez, Pablo Sandoval (“Pablo, meet Mark Verstegen …”) and David Ortiz fit.

I think just about everyone is game except Betts, Xander and Rodriguez at the the MLB level. I could see one of JBJ or Castillio going if we can't get rid of Hanley and the infield isn't doable. In the minors I want to keep Moncado and Devers. I would put Espinoza there but given his age, size and distance from the majors if a team wants him as a headliner I'm thinking hard about it. I'd be surprised if Margot makes it to Fort Myers and right now I think we sign a top FA starter.

I think we'll sign either Price or Cueto now. Price is probably getting just over Scherzer money while I think Cueto is more on par to Leater. Maybe a little more. The back end will always be a huge risk but hopefully we have cheaper starters coming up and whoever we sign can at least eat innings.
Say we trade for a #2 on a good deal like Carasco or Quintana it would be easier to pay for a top FA.

“@ken_Rosenthal: Rival executive says he will be “shocked” if Dombrowski names anyone other than Wren as #RedSox general manager.” Hoping this is still a lazy projection bc their past relationship. In the front office somewhere great but let's get a younger guy in there with a different view point. I think Ben made a mistake not at least giving it a year under Dom. Sure he wouldn't be the final voice but he could learn a lot and it would be better on his resume. If he ends up with Brewers that's career suicide bc that division is so good and farms not great.

I agree with the poster who thinks Margot is the most logical trade chip. I don't think he's Belre but he has little AA experience and no sure thing. if Dom thinks Hanley is best served in LF again and can't dump him I could see one of JBJ or Castillo going but would rather it be Margot.
I'm warming up to Eric's thought of Swihart since Vazquez is so good behind the plate and will probably get on base. I still think we can keep both and maybe play Swihart somewhere else some.
Curious what Doms first few days are like as far as a time frame? When will some GM interviews get leaked out and how fast will he get some of his guys in?

I've brought up the possibility with Pablo but would you be willing to trade Hanley for Votto? Does Dom try to put his stamp on the team by basically doing a reverse Kinsler/Fielder trade? Votto's a risk but according to fangraphs he has consistently put up $40 million a year of value and I think he'll be able to hit and get on base into his upper 30's.

im fine with DD and think there has to be a middle ground with the farm but Wren? Rumors have him being hard to get along with on top of being mediocre. Get a balance and bring in DiPoto.

Bob Nightengale @bnightengale 16s17 seconds ago Frank Wren is the leading contender to be GM under Dave Dombrowski with the #RedSox now that Ben Cherington is leaving. John Harts done a heck of a job cleaning up Frank Wrens mess in Atlanta. That would be awful.

It's tough to say trade him bc I think it's obvious he's a DH only now. I'm not sold he could handle 3B or 1B but we need to try this year.
Curious who would want him? Could the White Sox take him with a little money for Laroche? A subsidized Hanley plus prospects for Carasco?

Say we can pry a starter via trade (hopefully with 2 or more years of control) how would you feel about Kazmir as a signing? He isn't going to command the money of Price, Cueto, Grinkie or even Zimmarman. I think if we have a 2/3 of him and Buch with a similar type arm in a trade the rotation could be fine with Porcello and Erod at the end.

I'm so excited to get to watch Logan Allen and Espinoza in A ball next year. Yep. I live in Columbia and the Mets Sally team is moving in. Of course it would have been Boston a few years back but Greenville swooped in and built their stadium.
