I’m sorry. I thought Bref said this year. Yes, more expensive, but an important bridge to Cassas.

Joey Gallo. He’s my pick. Obviously, other teams are trying to trade for him as well. He’s only 27. I have two questions: 1. What will it take to get him?; 2. What’s his character? Really, really important. He’s a free agent after this year.

I'd say -- stick it out with what you have. Trade some on the 40- man for prospects not yet ready for the Rule 5 draft, where there is a squeeze. Bring upsome WooSox.
They've been a remarkable club this year. Fill from within; don't go over the luxury tax.
Trade/cut Andriese, maybe Workman, call up Ort, Houk. Maybe Valdez as a later callup.
Trade Chavez.
Convince Danny to go to AAA. If not, cut him.
Bring up Duran, Frenchy. If French can actually be an Lh-bat 1st baseman, all the better.
Marwyn? Maybe not so bad as a superior fill-in.

Giants Designate Luis Alexander Basabe. mlbtraderumors.com
He's out of options, and can't go to the minors unless he passes through waivers. We traded him to the White Sox as past of the Chris Sale deal. Rough year last year, but SSS. Worth a flyer for CF this year?

I like the idea of KK plus prospect(s) from the Rays. He's a high-energy player with great glove and legs. There's too much uncertainty with the idea of signing JBJ, and KK wouldn't cost as much (probably) as Jackie, at least in terms of the luxury tax.

Congratulations, Chaim! You hung in there. Some others here thought we could get 4-5 top 10 prospects. You aimed high, and we got it. Total cojanes. So sorry to see Mookie go but that’s the way it is. Vertigo-Downes-Wong is an OK package. I love Chaim as GM.

So, when — do we cut and run if JD isn’t signed? I think there has to be great value to him being on the team for ST — no? You have to know your teammates and, them, you, before the season starts. If that means you then watch JDM sign for 5/80 with the B’backs, so be it.

Why not Nick Castellanos?
From MLB Trade Rumors today:
"The Tigers pursued an extension with outfielder Nicholas Castellanos “to no avail” following the 2017 season, MLB.com’s Jason Beck reports. The 25-year-old slugger (26 in March) posted a very solid .272/.320/.490 batting line in a breakout campaign at the plate and gave the Tigers room for further optimism; Castellanos ranked fifth in the Majors in hard-contact rate (among qualified hitters), and Statcast credited him for the 10th-highest number of barreled balls in MLB. He has a projected arbitration salary of $7.6MM, per MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz, and is still under club control for another two seasons. Defensive question marks abound with Castellanos, as he’s rated poorly both at third base and in right field, but there’s plenty of value in his bat. The inability to come to terms on an extension only furthers the chance that the rebuilding Tigers trade Castellanos before he reaches free agency."
What would it take? I think I'd prefer him to JDM or Manny. No huge financial considerations at this point. Let him be the DH?
