Are the Reds doing that though? They just acquired young talent in the Latos and Simon trades. It seems like they are blowing it up. I wouldn't be surprised if something like Kelly, Ranaudo, and Marrero (or a lower level prospect) were shipped for Cueto.[/b] I would. And I would LOVE it

What are the chances someone like Kelly ends up in the pen now that we have an abundance of SP? I know it could all change with a telephone call, but since he's fairly superfluous and has experience as a RP in the minors, it could happen. I would be fairly happy if it did too- I think his fastball is a difference maker and we have dealt pretty much everyone with a good fastball in the last 6 months. I know that it takes more than throwing hard to be a good bullpen arm but we have no one who can really put a charge on the ball in the pen.
??
I only count 5
Buchholz, Porcello, Miley, Kelly, Masterson
9 if are you are counting Ranaudo, Rodriguez, Workman & Barnes
Those 4 do not equal an abundance

Who/what would you flip?I think Buchholz + Kelly in a Cueto deal makes sense. Gives Cincy 3 years of both and some upside as well. I would like Zimmermann but Washington doesn't need depth right now at SP. In Hamels case it makes more sense for Phillies to get prospects. They're not contending in the next 3 years. None Makes no sense for the Reds at all. The Reds are clearing space to sign Cueto long term.

Maybe they view Masterson going back to the bullpen? Insurance for both SP & RP I would think

No, but I would include him or Betts for Stasburg

I think the shopping could be pretty much done. Team just needs a back up Catcher and maybe a couple of Bullpen arms.
13 Position Players
Vazquez Napoli Pedroia Sandoval Bogaerts Ramirez Castillo Victorino Ortiz
Craig Nava Holt/Betts (1 down to AAA - both have options) Acquisition (Catcher)
12 Pitchers
Buchholz Porcello Miley Kelly Masterson/Competition ( Wright, Workman, Ranaudo, Barnes, Rodriguez, Owens, Johnson)
Uehara Mujica Tazawa Layne Acquisition/Competition (Masterson, Wright, Workman, Ranaudo, Hembree, Escobar, Britton) Acquisition Acquisition
Unless they can trade for a Starting Pitcher who is young and under control for multiple years (I.E. Stephen Stasburg, Gio Gonzalez) I am happy enough with this construction of the team going into next year.

So Morosi says Tigers are working on a trade for a Reds pitcher. Additionally he is reporting Marlins are closing in on Latos. Cueto to Detroit? They are probably both after Latos

I like this trade. I like it better if he gets extended.

Pedroia for Strasburg
As long as the team gets to negotiate/sign him to an extension first.
Buy out his last two years of arbitration and add on 8 more years after that. Allowing him to opt out in 2021 at age 32 with 4 years left on the deal.
Sox would have him for 6 years ages 26/27 - 31/32 before he could opt out

If a team needing a 2B (Nationals,Marlins) call should the Red Sox listen on Pedroia? Could moving Pedroia & Cespedes in separate trades for SP be beneficial? Leaving Betts at 2B and in RF Victorino/Nava/Craig/Holt?

Really doubt we end up with two of Leake, Porcello and Niese. Niese alone is probably like a 5% chance at best. Those are some weird rankings my friend
Others I would trade for if I had to look deeper are; ( in no particular order)
Scott Kazmir, Hisashi Iwakuma, Dillion Gee, Ian Kennedy, Tyson Ross, Andrew Cashner, Wade Miley, Natan Eovaldi
The only available free agents left that I would Sign; ( and only if it was for 2yrs max)
Brandon McCarthy, Ervin Santana
Pitchers I would sign to an incentive loaded contract due to injuries;
Josh Johnson, Kris Medlen
I would pass on both Shields & Masterson

My trade preference for Starting Pitching in order would be;
1) Stephen Strasburg 2) Gio Gonzalez 3) Anibal Sánchez 4) Cole Hamels 5) Jon Niese 6) Homer Bailey 7) Johnny Cueto 8) Rick Porcello 9) Mike Leake 10) Jordan Zimmermann
Preferably I would like to get one from the top 4 and one from 5-10
Realistically I think we could end up with 2 of Niese, Porcello or Leake

I don't think Amaro trades Hamels without getting one of Bogaerts, Betts, Swihart + Owens & + Bradley. Add in Bastardo and Coyle would have to be added.

The bonus is for $30MM, Jayson Stark of ESPN.com reports, amongst other updates regarding the precise workings of the deal. That includes $20MM up front and another $10MM spread over the life of the deal. Lester also receives a full no-trade clause, Stark reports. The vesting clause is actually for $25MM and comes with a $10MM buyout. It can vest with a 200-inning season in 2020 or if Lester racks up 400 total frames over 2019-20

With enough hitting, do you need an ace? Baltimore, for example, has tons of hitting that covered the lack of any ace KC - none, bullpen LA - weird mix of 2/3s like Weaver, Wilson, Richards Oakland - Sonny Gray and cobbled together until Lester/Szamarjia, after which they dropped Detroit - the gold standard Pittsburgh - Liriano and a potential future ace in Cole St.louis - Wainwright Yes, but after that Lance Lynn Washington - Strasburg Yes, Zimmerman, Yes LA - Kershaw, maybe, Greinke, yes SF - Bumgartner, borderline, rest is bunch of scrubs I say the Sox cobble together a rotation this year, no Hamels, sign Shields, Maeda and Masterson, and a bunch of bullpen arms. In the American League East you hit your way into contention for the playoffs and pitch your way during the last 6 weeks of the season towards a championship

Couldn't disagree more. Sandoval and Hanley took discounts to come here. They wanted to be here. Lester was always going to go to the highest bidder in my mind. You're seriously blaming ownership for not paying lester 6/150? Be my guest and root for the Cubs. I'll be rooting against them. Henry met with him and wanted him here. 6/135 is a very fair offer. I think it was until San Francisco offered 7yrs for $168 million. Lester wasn't leaving 1yr & $33 million on the table.

I think Gio Gonzalez should be the target 2015 29yrs $11,000,000 2016 30yrs $12,000,000 2017 31yrs *$12,000,000 $12M Team Option, $500k Buyout 2018 32yrs *$12,000,000 $12M Vesting Option becomes guaranteed with 180 innings in 2017 Some kind of package built around Holt, De La Rosa & Marrero (I seriously doubt these 3 alone are enough) read this article: districtondeck.com/2014/12/05/gio-gonzalez-national-league-ranking-2/I'd actually rather go after Strasburg but he would be more expensive.

Yes! It's like blaming/crediting BC with the drafts ... really, how much of that is him, and how much is Sawdaye? It's fine to personalize "Red Sox Baseball Operations" in the person of Ben Cherington - in the end, the buck stops with him - but let's be clear that's what we're doing. "He" inherited a team with a very high payroll, high expectations, but a deeply flawed roster. The farm system had a long dry period, leaving the team completely bereft of young players entering into their prime at a time when the free agent market was producing fewer and fewer of those. He made a very bad decision in Bobby Valentine (yeah, yeah, maybe he wanted someone else, but remember, he's getting credit/blame for everything here), and that cost the team. He pulled off a great trade, packing a big asset in Gonzalez with a couple of albatrosses in Beckett and Crawford to clear some space, and picked up some promising pitchers in the mix. Then, just about every decision he made in the winter of 2012-2013 came up roses ... extraordinary, rarely-to-be-repeated. It was like pitching a perfect game. But even mediocre pitchers can pitch a perfect game once in a while ... He had one glorious blaze of success and some mixed results this past year, obviously. AJ Pierzinski looked like a bad idea from the get-go, and the Drew signing was a total panic move that was somewhere between a mistake and a disaster. His bullpen construction has actually been pretty good consistently (as much as people complain about individual moves), but he clearly underestimated the transition for JBJ and Bogaerts and put too much faith in WMB. But he also was crushed by a rash of injuries and underperformance by guys who should've been the core the team (Victorino, Pedroia, Napoli, Buchholz, etc) But that's almost all in the volatile side of the equation, free agent signings and other things that are inherently risky. On the fundamentals, Cherington has the Sox positioned really, really well. They have a ton of payroll flexibility because of his smart management . They have a young core of players who look like possible All-Starts in Bogaerts, Betts, and even possibly Swihart, if he keeps developing next year. They have a stocked farm system because he has developed a set of players very well and has added to it with some good draft picks and international signings, with young, high upside guys like Margot, Devers, Chavis, etc. To me, he looks like a guy who can implement a long-term plan really, really well. His ability to maximize the opportunities that plan creates is still TBD. He was dealing with a relatively poor hand the first couple of years, so it's tough to know.
in the person of Ben Cherington - in the end, the buck stops with him - I believe it stops with Larry He made a very bad decision in Bobby Valentine - I think this was Larrys decision He pulled off a great trade - I think this was Larry just about every decision he made in the winter of 2012-2013 came up roses - I think this was Larry Cherington has the Sox positioned really, really well - I think this is because of Larry payroll flexibility because of his smart management - I think this is because of Larry he looks like a guy who can implement a long-term plan - This is Cherington & still to be TBD His ability to maximize the opportunities that plan creates is still TBD - agree

19. Took a nightmare of a payroll situation that was left for him and turned it into a World Series championship in a little over a year while holding onto the prospects that had us in the top 5 of baseball along with an incredibly flexible payroll situation moving forward.I'd say that was more a doing by Larry Lucchino
