I wonder if Homer Bailey isn't the SP the Red Sox should target.
2015 29yrs $10,000,000 2016 30yrs $18,000,000 2017 31yrs $19,000,000 2018 32yrs $21,000,000 2019 33yrs $23,000,000 2020 34yrs $25,000,000 $25M Mutual Option, $5M Buyout $96 Million guaranteed for 5yrs
If the Reds decided to trade Bailey it would free up the money they need to sign Cueto.
I wonder if a package built around Cespedes, & Marrero (2 needs for the Reds LF & SS) could work? Maybe add in Nava, Workman.
$96 Million over 5yrs seems to be more in the range the Sox were willing to be in.

Rubby to the pen is a distinct option, Rubby to Pawtucket is not since he's out of options.
Doesn't he have 1 option remaining?

I don't want a knuckleball pitcher coming onto the game with men on base. I don't care if he comes in to start an inning. I think having a catcher who can handle a knuckleball pitcher should be a big concern to a team. I think Wright should start and De La Rosa should be in the pen where I think he is better suited.

Everyone's so caught up with the question of landing either Lester or Hamels. What happens if we land neither? What's Plan C? Shields? If that's the case, I'd rather have Liriano.yuck & yuck

The broader point: if the backup catcher is going to play 20-25% of the reps at most, plus be injury insurance, is it worth spending valuable trade resources on a guy like Castro or Vogt or Jaso or Grandal? yes

Ian Kennedy & Yasmani Grandal for Yoenis Céspedes, Will Middlebrooks & Jackie Bradley Jr Where are you trading 1 of Swihart/Vazquez? Don't need to worry about it until next year or at the earliest the trade deadline. Vazquez & Grandal split the duties this year.

I still think Bradley can get a .370 OBP, not sure about the .430 slugging. The Red Sox really didn't handle him right. Right when he was on a hot streak they brought Betts up the first time and took away playing time. Then they send him down at the end of the year. I think you need to give a young player like Bradley more time to work through his problems. I can see it now, we trade him and a couple years down the line, he's an all star for the A's or some other well run team. I think they gave him that chance last year. I'm not saying he shouldn't get another at some point if the opportunity arises ( like Middlebrooks ), but I think he got time to work through his problems at the Major League level last year and now should work on them at AAA.

I'm suggesting that if the Dodgers were to entertain trading Greinke that his contract situation does not warrant more then a current Major League piece that fills a need for them and P(S)TBNL depending on what Greinke does after 2015.

There is no fair trade because the Dodgers are trying to win a World Series now and Grienke was hired help them do that. The Red Sox would have to provide a player who is as likely to help them win a World Series, and they don't have that. That's part of the problem, in fact. I think the Dodgers are looking for Bullpen help & possibly at Catcher. Tazawa & PTBNL PTBNL would depend on if Greinke opts out or not. If he does could someone like Jordan Procyshen or Jon Denney work? If he doesn't opt out I would think the PTBNL would have to be significantly better .

Looks more and more like we'll settle for big game james and then trade for a 2. Shouldn't it be "Blow The Big Game James" Gosh I hope they don't sign him

Having watched Owens pitch in Portland I have to say that while he got swing and misses on his curve ball I do not think he gets Major League Hitters out with it - YET -. I think they pick it up pretty good. When I was in the stands behind the plate I always new when he was throwing the curve from his body language and arm angle. Seemed easy to pick up. But it was good enough for/in AA.

OK, so lets say he opts outs. What's a fair trade for him on a one year deal making $25m? And would the Sox get a draft pick when he signs someplace else? Do they have to make a QO to him?

He has started at least 30 games 6 years running but what has happened to his K rate? He will be 29 in Feb and is a free agent after this year. The Brewers could use a 1B and a replacement at 3B when Ramirez retires they appear to be set at C, 2B, SS, LF, RF, CF.
Middlebrooks & Britton or Wilson

If the Dodgers decide to trade Greinke to make room for Lester should the Red Sox make an offer? He is slated to make $23 million next season in the third year of his six-year contract but may opt out in search of a larger deal next winter, when he is 32 years old. 2015 31yrs $25,000,000 May opt out of contract after 2015 season 2016 32yrs $26,000,000 2017 33yrs $25,000,000 2018 34yrs $26,000,000 What would it take to get him? Will he Opt Out? Should he Opt Out? If he Opts Out at age 32 would he get a better deal then 3yrs for $77m? Would the Red Sox hope he Opts Out? Is his Mind to fragile for Boston? www.mlbdailydish.com/2014/12/3/7331013/sources-dodgers-may-shop-zack-greinke-to-make-room-for-free-agent-scherzer-lester

Dobson to IR. Wonder whether we will pick up another receiver off waivers or the street, we're not exactly loaded with depth there. What a bust.

Ken Rosenthal @ken_Rosenthal Among the teams pursuing free-agent catcher David Ross, per sources: #Cubs, #RedSox, #Braves, #Padres. Others also involved. I continue to think he's the best pure backup on the market. Unless they're going slightly higher (think Jason Castro or Geo Soto-esque players), I'd prefer Ross over just about every other free agent (the only exception is Nick Hundley, who I'd be happyish with as well). Perfectly serviceable backup catcher who can step in and start in a pinch, though three consecutive years of sub-.290 OBPs and a 13.9 percent caught-stealing could hurt.

FWIW Mellen said on Twitter he sees Owens as a 3/4. Isn't that what his ceiling has always been projected as?
