Porcello is better than a) Cespedes and b) every pitcher currently in the Red Sox organization. If it's Cespedes for Porcello straight on, the Red Sox should do it. Not pulling the trigger because he's not better by the amount you want him to be better is kind of silly. Absolutely

He will be a free agent in 2017 and only 28 years old (29 in July 2017). Perfect time to extend/sign. 8 years with 2 team options with an OPT OUT after 4. Would love to get him. He's extremely talented, but has an injury history an is a 3-4 WAR player by any measure. Mookie is likely just as valuable (at least) and will be under control for longer. You posted that you were willing to do Bogaerts + Owens + Rijo for Sale. How about for Strasburg? Strasburg is only 8 months older. Switch out Bogaerts for Betts. I'd do it.

We may need pitching more, but there's a good chance Mookie is equally as valuable as Strasburg, while being less injury prone. And Strasburg is going to cost huge money to extend/sign. He will be a free agent in 2017 and only 28 years old (29 in July 2017). Perfect time to extend/sign. 8 years with 2 team options with an OPT OUT after 4. Would love to get him.

This team is bad. Rondo is not looking like a Max Contract Candidate and not helping his trade value. This Coach needs help.

Ill tell you what it takes. Mookie Betts, Devin Marrero, One of Owens/Rodriguez at the least. Wouldnt be surprised if it cost us more then that I'd do that for Stephen Strasburg

2 names that I think could be interesting are; Everth Cabrera - 28yr old switch hitting SS with 35+ SB potential, some off field problems Eric Young Jr. - 29yr old switch hitting OF/2B with 35+ SB potential

Strasburg had a 242:43 K:BB ratio last season. That's getting into Pedro territory. I don't think the Nationals would trade him for anyone who isn't named Trout. Can we get Mookie to change his name? Mookie Trout for Stephen Strasburg

I would not move multiple prospects for a shark rental. Just sign Masterson. Masterson would better off signing a 1yr deal with a NL Club.

I just don't see Beane trading Russell for him and then flipping him for anything less than a near top flight prospect half a season later That's why I think Beane is better off holding on to him and trading him to a contender at the trade deadline. I think he will get a better return.

Fair enough since I agree Samardzija is better than Cashner and was last year, but also figure in Kennedy was quite a bit better than Hammel last season as well (2.9 vs 1.7). Though I admit it was very difficult to find similarly ranked pitchers with similar control to make a parallel and Cashner & Kennedy were the closest I came up with. However, even with that resultant difference between the two packages, the value might be a bit mitigated since I believe people would admit that Addison Russell is a superior prospect to Blake Swihart. For the mid season rankings (most 2015 aren't up yet) Russell was a consenus top 5 prospect. Swihart was generally between 15-25 from what I could tell. I haven't found any top lists for 2015 as of yet, but I'd bet those numbers remain pretty similar. Overall, the point was that I think Beane over-paid by quite a bit in that deal. So while I'd like Samardzija, if we're setting his overpayment as a baseline for what we'd need to get a deal done, I don't think it's worth the cost. Seems reasonable when your chasing the World Series

Prospect Deven Marrero is said to be available in trades, Martino writes, and the Red Sox have a well-documented need for starting pitching, making the two sides a good fit on paper. www.nydailynews.com/blogs/baseballinsider/sifting-ny-mets-shortstop-options-blog-entry-1.2030011

100 win seasons mean nothing. 2 teams in the last 20 years that won 100 games won the world series. How could you justify not giving up two blocked prospects for a front end starter? How/Why are Marrero (24 with 3 options) and Cecchini (23 with 2 options) blocked?

Also, I'm not sure what the 5th year option is, but since Amaro gave it to him, I'm sure there's some kind of stupidly high buyout involved that will have to be paid and make the total contract bigger. $13M Vesting Option vests with 55 games finished in 2015 or 100 in 2014-15. He had 52 GF in 2014

You would? He's blocked for the considerable future and most likely will never hit at the major league level. If we can get any value for him, ship him out I don't think Marrero is blocked. I think Xander still needs to prove that he's a SS

Bradley Jr is probably the name in that deal I'd like to include the least. He should start in AAA to see if he can get his offense back on track, obviously. However, even if he cannot, as a defensive standout and a left handed hitter, he is the natural compliment to an outfield of Ramirez, Castillo and Betts. Utlimately if the trade came down to Marrero and Bradley for Shark and Oakland wouldn't budge on anyone else, I'd pull the trigger, but would prefer not to sell what I think of as absurdly low on Bradley. That said, a trade of Marerro and Ranaudo for Samardzija seems about fair to both teams in my opinion. Would also enable us to have some assets to trade for another SP, likely to fill in the 3 role, or for a very good bullpen arm. If that's what it takes, I hope we get this done. I think that would be a steal for the Red Sox. They would get a chance to extend him and if not give him a QO

I know we re-signed Koji, but I'm not super confident with him. We still have Mujica, Tazawa, and Workman as well. Looks to me like we could use a lefty. I'm not a big Tommy Layne fan. Are there any decent ones available? (Aside from Miller, whom I'd love to get back at the right price.) I'm also a big fan of moving RDLR to the pen. With his fastball velocity and developing changeup, I think he'd be effective as a setup man, and if he proves worthy, maybe he takes over as our long term closer. I don't really want to spend on a guy like Robertson, even though I think he's a good pitcher. What do you all think? The Red Sox just need Pitchers who can get a Lefty out.

Whats a "home town discount"? If a team was to hypothetically offer Lester 6 years at $25 million per with a $5m signing bonus and an option year with a $5m dollar buy out making it a guaranteed 6 year contract for $160 million dollars whats the discount rate? Match the signing bonus and buy out and discount the yearly per by $1 million making it a guaranteed $154m contract?

Mookie Betts for Stephen Strasburg
Is this to big a price to pay from the Red Sox point considering Strasburg is a free agent in 2017 & Scott Boras is his Agent but not enough from the Nationals point because Betts is still so young and unproven for a proven #1 SP?

Heaney's better than any starting pitcher we have in the system and you want to get him for merely a bench player? I know it's fun to pick on Loria, but this proposal is out there even by speculation standards. I agree that someone would have to be added to a Craig or Napoli deal for Heaney

Merloni made a good point on WEEI.... If we were going to spend 100 mm on Hamels AND prospects... Why wouldn't we just go get James Shields instead? I don't want Shields. I'd rather we get Leake or any number of other young Pitchers
