So, what's the over/under on when this deal starts to look like the Mike Lowell deal and people on this site are complaining about the rotting corpse of Dustin Pedroia?

So, what's the over/under on when this deal starts to look like the Mike Lowell deal and people on this site are complaining about the rotting corpse of Dustin Pedroia? 2017 2022, he'll be 38 and probably on his very last legs. 2017-18, probably we'll all be noticing a decline in his skills. Team is going to be paying him in total (figures are close) 122m over the next 9 years. Not nearly as bad as many of us figured it would be, especially with the preliminary reports being 5/100m. I was one set against 5/100m, a fact. 9/122m? I can go along with that, even if the las2, even a stretch 2 1/2 years are not the greatest.

Well there goes my plans for the 2016 draft pick.
Its not my money and you can always trade him to the Dodgers.

Pedey might not be earning his money in the end of this contract (hey lets not bet against him) but the AAV over the life of this contract makes it likely it could really pay of overall for the Sox. He pretty much got the money we all expected but for more years than we thought. The difference is Pedroia will likely retire in Boston and the Sox will have about 7 million more to spend every year (assuming that he could get 20 million in FA)

It could've been a lot worse I guess.
For context the Yankees gave Jeter half that total for 2011-2013.
Hopefully this is the one token long term face of the franchise contract and all long term deals going forward will be to lock up the Xander's and JBJ's.

“@bradfo: Pedroia and Red Sox have agreed in principle on extension. Starts in 2015 goes to '21. Comes down to approximatey 7 years for $100 million” The parties agreed to replace Pedroia's 2015 team option at $11, so effectively it is 6 additional years and approx. $90mm. No trade clause. Fair deal for both sides.

Instead of a gold watch as his retirement gift, maybe Pedey will get a flying car!

But, now we have to trade Mookie.

Reasonable deal and one which will pay Pedroia less than he probably would have gotten had he been healthy and productive through 2014-15. It's two or three years longer than I would have liked, but the AAV is reasonable. I probably wouldn't have offered it had I been the FO, but it could have been a lot worse and I understand the sentiment of locking up a very likeable guy through the end of his career.

It's a much better deal that I anticipated. Don't like the length much but the $/year is nowhere near the $20 million/year figure that was being tossed around. I keep telling myself he's the Red Sox version of Derek Jeter so maybe he'll age as well as Jeter did before he broke down in October 2012, at 38 years old. Given inflation, by time 2021 rolls around maybe his annual rate will be comparable to the average utility man.

When does Pedroia get named captain, anyways? Not that it really means anything in the big scheme of things, but you would think they would - an honor only bestowed upon Yaz, Jim Rice, and Jason Varitek.

How about the Red Sox let Farrell win the next three World Series and retire while in top. Then Pedroia becomes player/manager?

It's an expensive/LT contract, but you have figure Sox recoup a good amount of revenue from him. He is a fan favorite, came from the farm system, scrappy underdog player. He is the kind of guy you like to root for. It becomes much more rational to buy a jersey at those ridiculous prices if you know the guy will be here for the next 7 years. Think there is more to the contract other than his performance on the field.
Remember that time Pedroia slacked on that play? Yeah, neither do I.

Congrats to Dustin. Not as bad a contract as I thought it would be. He is an easy guy to root for. No more head first slides into first please.

I realize you're kidding of course, but Pedroia would be an awful manager. "Why can't any of you hit this guy? He sucks!"

Under for every dime I have. I don't like the deal. I love Pedroia, but I've never looked at the guy and seen anything but a player who's body is going to be completely spent by the time he's 32. We'll see.

He is going to be underpaid for the first few years of this contract and probably overpaid the last couple. So it is probably fair.
People will of course be complaining those last couple of years about the salary...
