I don't mind Farrell giving Ortiz the night off. I mind him giving Ortiz the night off when he's in the middle of an insane hot streak. Francona used to do this all the time - and the player would seemingly always go 0 for the next 6 games. Maybe it was one of those "scheduled" days off or maybe he asked for it, but not a lot of players want to sit down when the bat is finding hits. Alternatively, Ortiz has run the bases a lot in the last few days and needs a breather for some minor aches and pains.

Pretty poor start by Lester so far. If he fails early, who's the long man tonight? Rubby?

Whenever I start to think Gomes might not be bad at defense after all, he goes and does something like that.

I don't care how many diving catches Gomes makes. The guy is a bad outfielder. That has little to do with that last terrible play either.

FWIW, Gameday has Lester getting squeezed by the ump on that Maxwell AB.

Didn't we get to the point with Beckett where we realized it was useless to think he'll regain his form? I feel the same way about Lester. What he was, is gone. He's too thick-headed to become a pitcher instead of just having a power arm. Not sure he's in my playoff rotation if Buchholz is healthy. Clay, Peavy, Lackey and Doubront. Lester is our 5th starter. Might make it somewhere else. San Diego, SF or Seattle. Days of being a dominant pitcher in Boston are over. With his pitching accumen, he's a 4-5. We've got those coming up who will make 500k per year. Not 15m.

I'll turn this game on if they put Rubby in.

Who else would they put in but RDLR? Workman is spent, Wright optioned. Breslow could probably give 3 innings but that likely won't be enough.

Lester's bounced back nicely. Offense needs to string together a few hits off Chen.

I'm still not too happy with Lester. He was pretty lucky, for instance, that that line drive was right at Johnny Gomes. But he does seem to have some idea of where the strike zone might be, now, which is certainly an improvement.

Offense needs to string together a few hits off Chen. Junk ball lefties give the red sox problems. We know this.

According to game day, there wasn't a single pitch in the strike zone on that at bat by Napoli. So at least he's consistent.

Ells, Salty, Nava, Drew, and Holt can't hit against lefties.

Crappy lefties and the Red Sox don't mix. They have a good bullpen too.

Well on the bright side, Lester has gotten through 6 after that brutal 1st.
