@scottlauber Farrell on Ellsbury's bruised left thumb: "Fully expect it'll be something he'll manage the rest of the way"
He's out tonight as is Salty (bad back - Farrell says he'll be out 2-3 days)
Lineup: Victorino CF; Nava RF; Pedroia 2B; Ortiz DH; Carp 1B; Gomes LF; Drew SS; Ross C; Middlebrooks 3B; Lester P

Inexcusable that Bogaerts is sitting out again.

1,2,3 from scherzer. Could be in for a long night.

The Red Sox will need to score some runs. Lester can't hold'em back.

Right on cue 1,2,3 inning for Lester. Lets get him some runs though.

Why is Farrell batting the pitcher 8th tonight?

He's probably going to let up 7 runs after I say this, but ... the most positive development of the second half of the season has been Lester's reemergence. It's not just his numbers, either - his stuff (fastball velo, solid curve, revamped cutter) has gotten better over the course of the year, which we haven't been able to say for awhile.
A healthy Clay would obviously be huge, but nothing has given me more confidence in the Red Sox than Lester getting "it" back.

I hear what Eck is saying. I know you're only going to get so many pitches to hit against this guy.
But still, under no circumstances is a 4-pitch inning acceptable as an offense.

Have to pinch hit for Ross here.

Ross had zero shot at any of those 97 mph fastballs.
BUT MIDDLEBROOKS!

Hell yes Middlebrooks. I thought for sure we were about to waste our one chance right there.

For those who can't watch the game, this is the best I've seen Lester in recent memory, especially from the 3rd inning onwards. His curveball and cutter have looked particularly nasty, and his command has been good. The Tigers have gotten a few bloop hits, but other than the Iglesias double, nothing has been hit particularly hard.

He was handcuffing righties with 92 mph cutters, and they were swinging over most of em. Even with the 8 hits, this was a downright impressive performance against probably the best lineup in baseball.

Dammit. Pitcher's laboring, just struggled with the last batter...so let's swing at the first pitch. Hate that.

See, rational bullpen usage would suggest that you bring in Uehara to face Cabrera, Fielder, and Martinez, but because the save exists, Farrell's going to mix and match with the pu-pu platter of decent setup men.

I would agree but he'd only threw 2 legit strikes to Middlebrooks and was all over the place with Ross.

Lester does the job again. But that doesn't say enough. I agree with jmei, best he's thrown in a long time. Now bring it home pen.

But pitching effectively in the ninth inning requires special skills. Not like pitching to Cabrera/Fielder/Martinez, which any chump can do.

Middlebrooks sporting some pretty unimpressive range on that diving attempt. That play should be made.
