Farrell just used 3 batters to get 3 outs. Laughably bad bullpen management right there.

See, rational bullpen usage would suggest that you bring in Uehara to face Cabrera, Fielder, and Martinez, but because the save exists, Farrell's going to mix and match with the pu-pu platter of decent setup men. I would also argue for a 4 out save here. Maybe if Tazawa's getting it. Uehara is the kind of reliever (old, potentially fragile) who I don't mind being limited to one-inning stints.

I mean I'd rather just use the best reliever (Uehara), but in the realm of things that are actually going to happen, that wasn't the worst way to deal with those three hitters, especially in a one-run game.

I don't have a problem with it now that rosters are expanded. The worry the rest of the year is that the game goes to extras and you run out of relievers by the 11th.

Well, I'm glad Farrell isn't the only one who occasionally tries to ride a starter too far into games.

Farrell just used 3 batters to get 3 outs. Laughably bad bullpen management right there. See, I don't see it that way this time. Farrell is obviously going with Uehara all the way in the 9th, and I suspect he feels he has one chance to win this game, and that's to win it 2-1. So he decided to do everything he could in the 8th to defend the lead. I am empathetic with the concept of bringing in the guy who's been lights-out to face the meat of the order. But that isn't the way the current world works. "Bullpen by Committee" has no more chance of being resurrected at this point than Lance has of getting his trophies back.

By the way, this game puts the lie to the "Sox can't win in the playoffs without a TRUE ACE". Lester has been an utterly average pitcher this year and Scherzer has been the best in the league. But here we are. Because the best pitcher in baseball can lose 2-1 game as well as anyone, and an average starter can have a night.

I'm surprised they didn't pinch run Quentin Berry for Nava there. Would've been the perfect situation to do so.

Let's get a big hit here and get some breathing room.

My imagination or just horrible with bases loaded lately? If by "lately" you mean "in the last 5 minutes" (the mean attention span of the U.S. citizenry), yeah, it wasn't great. Whatever happens in the 9th inning, this has been a FABULOUS game for the Red Sox farm system.

He went the correct way in a game Boston needed to win after losing a tough game one in another pitching dual. Don't want to lose 2 of these kind of games in a row and lose momentum when the Sox have a chance to put major distance between themselves and the competition.

Also awesome game by Lester. He's first 2 innings I was worried it would get away from him but did he right the ship. Hope he goes on a nice run to finish the season.
