9/13-9/15 Red Sox vs. Yankees Series
|
Post by Guidas on Sept 16, 2013 15:52:44 GMT -5
I think Cleveland is getting in. Their schedule is stupidly easy down the stretch and TB and the Rangers play each other 4x, not to mention the Rangers and Rays have been reeling lately. Might be a little early to count the MFYs out just yet. They've got 9 of their last 12 games against last-place teams. They are just about cooked, but the flame will be turned down as they drift to the end of the season. I am really pulling for anyone but Tampa and KC at this point. Yankees I'd be fine with. It will be SO interesting to watch what they do regardless in the off season. I think Steinbrenner is under pressure from the other siblings to sell and that's one of the reasons for them to try to get under lux tax level. Whatever the motivation, they will have multiple holes to fill with no reliable solutions readily available coming up, especially with pitching. One of Garza/Santana/Bailey will cost them #2 starter money and probably at least 5 years. And just think, they could be the one's with Cliff Lee if they had only relented and traded Derek Jeter's heir apparent in 2010.

I wish we were playing those devils (stand in for what I really want to say) every game from here on out so that we could blow them back to below .500. What a rotten mess they're in, and I don't mind being shadenfreudistic in my reaction to that.

It's pretty crazy to me that, on a day where he looked visibly uncomfortable and wild, Buchholz still lowered his already-obscene ERA. Not sure if that says more about the nastiness of his stuff or the quality of the Yankee lineup. It mostly says something about what a stupid stat ERA is.

In some ways (many) it's really nice with the W/C teams beating each other up every day like this trying to get in. Texas? Right now they look awful. Oakland took them to the cleaners, even at Texas. I'd still rather see them(Texas) and T/B out of the mix and the Tribe and a KC or Baltimore in the PO, just not some team with superb pitching that is even capable of shutting down an offense like TB can on occasion.

The A's have a real chance to beat out the Sox for the best record in the AL. They're currently 3 games behind the Sox but have only 2 more losses. All their remaining games are with the Angels (6), Twins (4), and Mariners (3). None of those teams have anything to play for.

That is if we take 2/3 from them this week. Then they have 4 at TB. 3 vs Toronto at home and 2 at Colorado isn't so tough either.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Yanks completely reloaded this winter with FA talent. Even 5-6 guys total and potentially 3 of our guys. They have to be looking at McCann / Salty. Ellsbury has merit for them and they seem to be enamored with Napoli after what he has done to them recently. With the cost of tickets in Yankee stadium, and the quantity available, they should have tremendous incentive to restock and it's not coming from their farm.

I believe their cap hit was near 40 million this year.

With the cost of tickets in Yankee stadium, and the quantity available, they should have tremendous incentive to restock and it's not coming from their farm. They are desperate to stay under the luxury tax threshold. They'll spend, but only under the threshold. Beginning next year, they can/will ramp back up. They have approx. $70mm in room, but have only seven players (Rodriguez, Jeter (assuming player option is exercised), Wells, Teixeira, Sabathia, Soriano and Ichiro). Obviously, if Rodriguez is suspended, it will free up a lot of money. If Cano is re-signed, that's $15-20mm; Kuroda would be another $12-15mm; and Robertson and Gardner will cost another $9-10mm combined. Now they have $25-36mm in room and eleven players under contract (assuming Rodriguez on the roster). Add some minimum-salary guys like Pineda, Nova, Kelley, Betances, Warren, Phelps and Cervelli, and you're at $21-32mm in room and eighteen players under contract. Starters: Sabathia, Kuroda, Nova, Phelps, Pineda Bullpen: Robertson, FA, FA, FA, Kelley, Warren, Betances Lineup: Gardner, Jeter (SS/DH), Teixeira, Cano, Rodriguez, Soriano, Wells/Ichiro, Cervelli, SS FA Bench: Ichiro/Wells, TBDx3 BTW, I see no chance they are in the hunt for Napoli. They don't have a spot for him, with Teixeira at 1B and Jeter at DH (at least half of the time).

I've been onboard with one way of cutting salary is to just let Cano walk as soon as the bidding gets to 7-8Y and 125-150m range, then switch gears to Ellsbury. Ells, in that stadium and hitting 3rd will hit 20HR for them and steal 30-40 bases.
The offensive numbers Ells can put up at Yankee stadium would be comparable to Cano's and he would allow them to trade Gardner for help in other areas.

Ellsbury has topped 50 SBs his last three healthy seasons and that doesn't appear to be slowing down anytime soon.
The two areas the Yankees need to upgrade are shortstop and catcher. I could see Drew and Saltalamacchia being prime targets.

The Angels did us a favor last night though.
