Most unfulfilling sweep ever.

So, we won against the Twins with RDLR, Lester and Lackey. How do we feel about playing against the A's with Peavy and Doubront? (The good news is, Peavy and RDLR might not have as many home run problems in O.co Colliseum as elsewhere.) Not so sure about that... The ball flies pretty well at O.co during the daylight hours.

So Koji gets the win for probably one of his worst outings of the year, ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not to pick on Koji but: I thought he had some very hittable pitches in his save Mon. His "fb" looked pretty straight with no cut. I didn't see him this afternoon but I hope it was just an off day.

Koji's fastball has always been pretty straight. It's more where he locates it, his deception, and the fact that guys also have to think about the splitter that he manages to get away with it. Parmelee put a good swing on it, but Koji looked pretty Koji-like otherwise and it seemed more like a fluke than anything else.

Agreed. Looked like the same guy to me also. Only when he goes out there and buries the 1st 2-3 splitters in the dirt does the hitter have a chance and he get rocked, haven't seen that this season.
Man this team needs to just go and offer him a 2y deal for like 8-10mAAV right now. I could care less if he'll be 40 next year.

6.5 - Toronto's magic is fading. This Division could become a 4 team race within a week. If Sox can somehow pull-off a 6-4 or better roadtrip they should be in the thick of it. Then a nice 10 game homestand that includes 3 vs the Cubs.
Hold breaking up the team, pessimists. This ain't over yet.

The Sox are going to be sellers AND buyers - An interesting position to be in AND one in which he'll be vehemently criticized by every keyboard GM - Unless, of course, we win it all again.

Focusing on the pen:
We have one of the best bullpens in baseball. It's cost is $20.4m. We have Mujica signed for next year, an option on Breslow that I wouldn't expect the Sox to exercise and Tazawa arbitration eligible who will make somewhere near $2m+.
Mujica 4.75 (4.75 next year) Uehara 4.25 Breslow 3.85 (4.0 club option w/ .1 buyout) Capuano 2.25 Badenhop 2.125 Miller 1.903 Tazawa 1.275
I would guess that the Sox will spend between 20 and $25m on their pen next year. Miller, Koji and Badenhop are likely to cost significantly more next year than this year.

His "fb" looked pretty straight with no cut. I didn't see him this afternoon but I hope it was just an off day. Koji's incredibly consistent record the past 4 1/2 years is that occasionally someone will catch up to one of his pitches and hit it out. Otherwise, he's virtually impossible to score against. Yesterday was one of those occasions where someone caught up with one. I realize you're talking about how he looked rather than his results, but if he "didn't look good to you" and he still did exactly what he's been doing the last 4 1/2 years, that reinforces the legend rather than being a worrying sign. Wake me when he starts consistently allowing baserunners, and maybe even runs to score, through actual sequential offense rather than an isolated ball flying out of the park.

That doesn't bother me a bit. It may be a little irrational, but it's normal to want to get what you've earned, and Papi felt he'd earned a hit. Papi's supposed misplaced priorities certainly didn't get in the way of him going all out for the team and helping win the game, so where's the issue?

Not like he's helped the team at all in recent memory of anything...

Strange sweep, but the Sox needed it. Their offense just doesn't generate runs which is kind of amazing when you think about the fact that the Sox have stabilized the top 2 spots in the lineup with high OBP guys. I guess it's lack of clutch situational hitting, lack of power, and lack of speed that makes it hard for the Sox to score runs despite a decent OBP.
At least on the flipside the pitching has held up pretty well. The rotation is jumbled after Lester and Lackey but at least there are finally some intriguing possibilities. The bullpen is as good as anybody's in the game I would think. Strange season.
As far as Papi goes, I guess it's possible to be self absorbed and yet still be a clutch team player. With him, I don't think it's one or the other. He's egotistical and worries about himself a lot (and would be wiser to be less vocal about it) but at the same time this is the guy who rallied the troops together in the 6th inning of Game 4 of the World Series last year. You can't convince me that he doesn't care about his team too.
I think a lot of the best athletes are egotistical. I used to keep stats for softball and guys would complain about my "official scoring", and it's not like they were getting paid to play. I guess ego is ego. Doesn't make you a bad guy, but it can make you a pain in the butt to deal with. But I would say that Ortiz is well worth the trouble.

Comes back to the old adage about walking the talk. Thinking you're good at what you do, and thinking about it out loud, means having to back it up. Has any player backed it up more consistently than Ortiz?

Sox are 13th in the AL in slugging.
