Uehara the only bright spot this season, he is so good! Badenhop says hello: Jon Shestakofsky ?@shesta_Sox 21m Longest relief streaks without an ER in Red Sox history: Koji Uehara, 33.2 in 2013 Dick Radatz, 33.0 in 1963 Burke Badenhop, 30.0 in 2014 All the more amazing with Hopper being a contact pitcher. I remembered MDC starting one season making it thru April without letting up a run, then found out he just didn't let up any earned runs and had 2 unearned ones. 2009 season, MDC went until 5/3 14.1IP without letting up an earned run out of the pen. Fellow reliever Ramon Ramirez went 16IP and until 5/4 without surrendering a run. That's the only 2 guys I could remember with any kind of streak. Anything nearing 15 is great, 30 is monumental, especially for someone like Hopper who isn't a K pitcher.

Buchholz has lost several MPH from his fastball. I think the fastest pitches he has thrown this year have been around 92, but most of the time his FB has been around 89 or 90. When he could dial it up to 96 or 97 his other pitches became much more effective. Right now there isn't enough speed separation among his pitches, especially between the fastball and the changeup.
Also, add to that that he has lost the incredibly good command he once had, and none of his pitches are as crisp as they once were.
It is like he aged five years or more in the last year or two. I'm not optimistic that we'll ever see Buchholz back to what he was. But if he get that command back and get a little more speed separation among his pitches, he still could be a solid starter.

Buch has been between his current 91.0 average and 2011 92.6 according to fangraphs. His big dip was 2011 after 2010 at 94.1, then 93.6 in 2009.
I agree the drop in velocity is some of the problems, all pitchers have to work much closer to perfection and make fewer mistakes without any velocity, such as both Buch and Doubront now are faced with.

At least Buchholz can be somewhat effective minus the velocity. Tim Lincecum lost 5 mph and became a nightly train wreck waiting to happen.

2007 0.8 1.0 WAR in 22 IP 2008 0.8 -1.2 WAR in 76 IP 2009 1.1 2.0 WAR in 92 IP 2010 3.5 5.6 WAR in 173 IP 2011 1.1 1.9 WAR in 82 IP 2012 1.5 0.9 WAR in 189 IP 2013 3.2 4.3 WAR in 108 IP 2014 0.2 -1.3 WAR in 50 IP over close to 1/2 the season That's 1 1/2 seasons of very good pitching, 5 not so good if you include this year, and his 2007 hot start. Fixed it for you. He shouldn't be recalled until his mechanics are both fixed (which appears to be the case already) and reasonably consistent (not yet the case), or his rehab time runs out. But assuming that happens, there's no doubt he's one of the five best pitchers in the organization. Which is not that shocking, figuring that a year ago at this time he was the best pitcher in baseball by a wide margin. Thanks, Eric. You actually made my point much better than I did for the most part. My only objection is that if he does come up when his rehab time runs out but he's not yet consistent, he should start back in the bullpen until its there.

De La Rosa has now had two mediocre starts and two dominating starts. Eh... I guess earned runs are your only evaluation tool? I would say he has had one dominating start (his first), two good starts (yesterday where he had some luck and vs. the Tigers where he had none) and one mediocre one (and even then he posted a 7:2 K:BB ratio).

Stephen Drew already has the 9th-highest fWAR among Sox position players.

@chriscotillo: Sources: #RedSox likely bringing up Garin Cecchini. He will be in Boston today. Unclear who he is replacing.

I.e. you can't call a guy up if he is suspended.

Who takes the spot on the 40 man? Depends on how Holt does. Could be Betts. (ADD: speculation)

My guess is that Cecchini is the guy who will be optioned in a day or two when Workman begins his suspension and the Red Sox need to add someone (Doubront, probably?) to pitch during Workman's turn in the rotation.

They'll certainly wait until a call-up (or DFA worth grabbing) is needed. Was thinking Betts if they felt he could be an effective part of a platoon in CF. And as JMei says, they'll need the 25-man spot for a spot starter, so no need to rush anything.

Does anyone have an answer to this? It seems like the smart move would be if Workman was to be suspended and it would take a roster spot, to option him now and recall when he come is reinstated, that is legal... I am guessing that the suspended days don't count towards the 15 days a player needs to stay in the minors.

Brock Holt, CF Xander Bogaerts, 3B Dustin Pedroia, 2B David Ortiz, DH Mike Napoli, 1B Daniel Nava, RF Jonny Gomes, LF Stephen Drew, SS David Ross, C
If you predicted that the Sox would ever use this lineup at the beginning of the season, you probably live in one of the nicer hotels in Vegas.

Or you were very drunk at the time. I'm questioning the positioning. Why Gomes over Bradley against RHP? Wouldn't be as big of a deal if we didn't have an infielder starting in CF. Add: must want to get Holt some exposure. I know JBJ doesn't hit, but with his defensive value he is still more valuable than Gomes against RHP.

According to this, an optioned player would not count for a spot on the 25-man active roster. However, I imagine that it would be poor form to appeal a suspension and then option the player in question right before that appeal is resolved. That would be a pretty bald-faced attempt to get around the punitive effect of having to keep a suspended player on the 25-man active roster.
