Knock on wood, but this is a credible Koji impression so far.

This win with two Holt runs-scored and no runs after the third? Nice Pitching: [/b]which has to dominate to beat anyone these days.

Couldn't have won this one without Jonny Gomes.

I don't know what's more incredible... Brock Holt as a center fielder or Edward Mujica as a closer.

Like I said, perfect decision, going with Mujica.

What, you guys don't trust Farrell? Farrell is perfect. I mean I would have put JBJ in for Gomes rather than Nava but look how perfectly Gomes played that last ball! Nava might have botched it! Farrell is a god!

Mujica's stuff looked terrific tonight. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come. His fastball has great tail down and away to lefties and he was peppering it at the bottom of the strike zone.
Maybe we just shouldn't get so worked up about a two month sample with a reliever??

Seriously, though, the offense needs to start scoring some runs. Since that 10-run explosion, they've gone 2, 2, 1, and 2 runs scored.

Counting on the pitching to carry you every game won't get you where you need to go. Still not much in the way of offense, but that pitching sure has been something. Mujica was very effective for the bulk of last season. Relievers are so variable it's hard to know what's going on. But just as it can take a starter 50 innings to feel comfortable, the same can happen with relievers though that's a much larger chunk of their season. This one was hopeful, especially since they can't possibly expect Uehara to come in night after night.

Now that the fabulous Muhlah is back I guess we can sell high on Koji. Or is 10 minutes against a aaaa team too small a sample size? We may need to run that calc thru Watson.

I think that's promoting a guy to his level of incompetence. It wastes his versatility an exposes his bat. If Holt is something like a .280/.340/.380 true-talent player (certainly very plausible, and not that much higher than his .284/.335/.374 Steamer RoS projection), he'd fit in perfectly as the long end of a platoon at 3B with Middlebrooks, with the ability to fill in at 2B/SS/OF as needed. Based on his entire career, Clay Davenport has him at a peak .291 / .351 / .392. Furthermore, the separate minor and major league-derived lines are almost identical. That's essentially average for a MLB 3B, a tick above average at 2B. Steamer seems to be putting way too much weight on 2013, clearly an outlier.

Badenhp is now 2nd all time Red Sox for consecutive scoreless innings. He's now 1/3 of an inning behind Koji last year (33.2).
Also of note, 3 out of our arguably 4 best relievers are free agents at the end of the year. Badenhop, Miller, Koji. Of those, only Tazawa is under control. Win or lose, next year will be a bullpen rebuilding year.

Hopefully they re-sign most of them. The back end of our bullpen has been a strength all year, as it was last season.

Badenhop is not as good as he's shown so far. He doesn't strike guys out much, so he's very dependent on the defense of his infield to get outs. He's also had what looks to be a flukily-low home run rate so far this year. He's a really good middle reliever and probably their next best reliever, but I wouldn't put him on the Tazawa/Miller/Uehara tier.

Realizing of course that there's no room on a major league staff for a guy that's a ground ball machine, I didn't put him on a tier, that's your interpretation. I said arguably 4 best relievers. Who do you think has been better ?

I wasn't disagreeing with you my man. Just adding some additional thoughts.
ADD: I even said right there in my post that he's been their next best reliever.

Yeah by I think you are bordering on paralysis by analysis there. He's been every bit as valuable as the other three if you don't buy the save concept. Maybe slightly more so because he has 20% more IP.
EDIT Make that the other three except Koji, came to my senses. It always amazes me that the Brewers traded him in the first place, he's been a consistently excellent reliever for several years. They didn't even ask for much.

If there's a runner on first already I might prefer to bring in Badenhop though.
