If Farrell wanted somebody who could bunt Betts over, why didn't he just leave Kelly in the game? He's probably the best bunter on the team, and he wouldn't have wasted Middlebrooks bat. I get that he did a great job managing the clubhouse on the 2013 team, but Farrell is really a very poor strategist. He's not Ned Yost-level bad, but once a game he does something that leaves me scratching my head.

Very solid outing from Kelly. This is exactly what he was doing last year: doesn't strike people out, walks too many people, but for whatever reason is able to bear down and get the outs when they're most important. It strikes me as an unsustainable profile, but what do I know? Bear in mind that I've barely seen any innings from him, but it seems like a possible reason for Kelly's walks may be the movement on his fastball. It really showed some nice arm-side run tonight. With that kind of movement, if he tries to hit the inside corner on a RHB, it will end up as a ball. It's a bit of a stretch, but it seems somewhat like Webster in that you kinda want to throw it to the center of the plate and let the sink and tail do their thing.

Cespedes Napoli on and Ortiz up and will be walked, bases jamed. It's now or never let's get two.

Nice piece of hitting. Nappoli's such a professional.
Add: Well, that didn't take Bogaerts long...

Winning is fun and all, but we're supposed to be losing games for the draft pick. Don't lose sight of the objective team.

I'm ok sounding like a broken record on this point: the success of players like Joe Kelly and Xander Bogaerts is much more important to the Red Sox future than securing the #8 or whatever pick in the 2015 draft.

He is so professional and intelligent, but after the game starts his brain freezes. The pinchhitting of Ortiz, knowing he would be intentionally walked, was another bonehead move. If he left Nava in, then he might have had Ortiz to pinch hit for Vazquez. It's also possible they would have pitched to Nava and anything could have happened. It didn't matter as things turned out. but it could have. I do not want to see this team tank now. Winning next year begins now.

Two first pitch swings. Two good results.
Here's to Bogaerts swinging at the first pitch more than once a month.

Even on that line out in the 9th, Mookie looks like he just has such a quick bat that he can hit anything. He just looks like such a sure thing. He has the ability to get that bat head around so quickly, just as he gets great jumps on the bases, and he adds the ability to keep the bat level through the zone so long and beat out so many infield hits. Add the mature approach drawing a lot of walks and so many other aspects to his game and this kid just looks like a lock to be a real solid lead off or #2 hitter with decent pop even. He pounces on strikes. He's a strike assasin.
His base is tremendous. He may already be at his upside. He's that good. I think this kid could hit 300 in the majors right now. The best years of his career might be happening as we speak. I'm sure he still has some development especially defensively in the OF but considering everything, we could probably slot him at 3rd or SS right now and he'd be a lock there for the next 15 years.
We should be grooming him for whereever we need him in the infield. Give Middlebrooks a shot at 3rd this fall and send Mookie to 3rd all next spring training because if Middlebrooks does well we could still be confident in trading him. Mookie is a lock, whereever we put him, and to me he is optimized most in the infield.

Isn't this what we were all saying about Bogaerts about a year ago? Well, in fairness, it was looking that way until June. I don't know if the Red Sox win the WS without him and he was one of the best players in baseball the first 2 months of this season.

Have Bogaerts struggles this season altered our projections on what he will ultimately become? I haven't lost much sleep over it, as I just chalk it up with him being a 21 yo in his first full season in the majors. But what do I know. I'd love to hear a more "professional" opinion on the subject.

Winning is fun and all, but we're supposed to be losing games for the draft pick. Don't lose sight of the objective team. You mean the team gets no draft pick at all if it wins any games? You already know that. But for the others that aren't as experienced in the baseball field, we're in a race to the bottom for an incrementally better pick. And for those that say the better pick may not matter, we were one pick away from Sonny Gray and 2 picks away from Marcus Stroman. (Who knows if we'd have drafted them if they made it to us, I'm not an expert, but Gray/Stroman would look a little different in Boston than Barnes/Marrero)

I'm not necessarily disagreeing, but I'll add that it isn't one OR the other. There are other ways you can lose games. And while the nuances of the draft picks often don't matter (I'm not sure how important the extra slot money will be and rarely is there a great player that drops that you missed because you were one draft slot too low) but there's the danger of falling out of protected pick land, which may be important in the winter for addressing our starting rotation. We don't have to scoreboard watch other teams if we just lose ourselves.

wow, awful bunt by Will. Whos playing 3rd base next year?? Do we need a 3B who can bunt?

Not really, but we need a 3B who will hit over 200 and not strikeout 140 times a year.

Mookie sent down. Johnson activated. I guess there will be less bitching about Kelly Johnson sitting on the bench forever.

Couldn't they save a 40-man spot by placing Craig on the 60-day DL?

Couldn't they save a 40-man spot by placing Craig on the 60-day DL? It's more about protecting players from the rule 5 draft this offseason.

Our friend capuano spun a gem against the tigers. That figures. With the demand for pitching, can you believe: He flew through waivers with no team claiming him? COL traded him to NYY after success in AAA ... for a few dollars?
