To me, Xander has always had a higher upside but Mookie has a better base. As far as I'm concerned we could just pencil them both in the lineup for the next year. My point being that Mookie looks like he will quickly make a positive adjustment to mlb at least as a hitter and if he plays the infield I think he's a plus defender as well. As of now at the mlb level. We may well not want to blow service time with him but I don't see the point of Kelly Johnson at all other than to enable us to keep Mookie in AAA to keep his service time under more control.
I wonder if they keep slotting him in CF.

Couldn't they save a 40-man spot by placing Craig on the 60-day DL? What if Craig truly is an ankle sprain?

Regarding Kelly's start, One of the things I like about him is his competitiveness. When all is said and done, I think that ends up a real solid trade for us and one of the key moves in strengthening this team for the future. If they can extend Cespedes at a reasonable price also, I think we can put another winner on the field with the talent they have and can sign next winter. If we can land a top pitcher in the next year or 2, I think Kelly and Buchholz probably are ok. RDLR, Owens, Barnes, Webster, Workman, Ranaudo etc...etc...will result in at least 2 decent #3 or 4 pitchers. Land a stud pitcher and we have a shot.

What if Craig truly is an ankle sprain? You mean the walking embodiment of an ankle sprain, right?

Winning is fun and all, but we're supposed to be losing games for the draft pick. Don't lose sight of the objective team. I'm ok sounding like a broken record on this point: the success of players like Joe Kelly and Xander Bogaerts is much more important to the Red Sox future than securing the #8 or whatever pick in the 2015 draft. Yup. It's a no-win situation. I want them to lose but I want them all (especially the young'uns) to play well. In addition, I'm always happy when they win and ticked when the lose. What a messed up season.

Glad to see the Red Sox send Mookie back down as it made no sense to have him spend so much time on the bench when he could be playing every day for Pawtuckett. It amazes me how Holt continues to play every day even though he has been absolutely brutal the second half of the season, batting .197 with an OPS .513 and striking out 3x for the third time in the last 11 days. NESN is certainly reaching with those Brock Star promos as his star has faded to black. He is a nice utility guy, but the league appears to have caught up to him which is good in a sense that the Red Sox will recognize that he should be used in a utility role. www.fangraphs.com/statsplits.aspx?playerid=9345&position=3B/OF&season=2014

Tim Britton ?@timbritton 6 min. Betts’ locker is cleaned out in St. Louis, suggesting he’s the move for Kelly Johnson.

Tim Britton ?@timbritton 6 min. Betts’ locker is cleaned out in St. Louis, suggesting he’s the move for Kelly Johnson. Really is a shame. Johnson adds nothing to the team. A AAAA caliber player at this stage and of less use to this team than is Herrera (on the DL). Sox probably should have just DFA'd Johnson after Cashman took Drew's salary off the Sox hands, rather than waste a 40 man spot with Johnson. It's probably best for Betts to get AB's at Pawtucket it Farrell isn't going to play Betts, except USUALLY against LH pitching, but you have to wonder what is going on when one of the 10 worst teams in the league can't find full time AB's for it's best prospect over platooning him with a 31YO ultra light hitting veteran who is at best a 4th OF. The team has earned the last place position this season with managerial blunders.

I've calmed down since the deadline and want to go back to being more dispassionate about wins and losses as the team transitions to its future...but these kind of decisions leave you scratching your head. Are you sure this is just based on a Farrell decision? It seems to me the front office may also want to see if this guy could be useful for next year's infield depth, even though they will have no rights to him after season. or a waiver wire deal in case some contender gets an injury down the stretch.

Dob't really see how. Most teams already have a poor hitting, average fielding utility guy anyway. Boston doesn't really need Herrera and probably he has as much, if not more value than does Johnson with 3 years of control left, not that he has much value. Just saying. Neither is what would call any type of "hot" commodity, but the guy a team would think long and hard about protecting on the 40 man roster at the end of the year in herrera's case on some teams imagine.

If he plays, Johnson just takes at-bats away from players who really need them. I hope this is a short term thing, done out of decency and not any perception of need.

I like Workman in the bullpen. In the postseaon, he was magnificent for us. Hopefully we consider moving him back to the pen.

I'm starting think that way too. Especially because we seem to have quite a couple similar starters in the minors.

Bogaerts' approach is completely gone. His walk rate since the beginning of June is horrible. Shame his slump has gotten so far.

Hopefully next season we see mentally tougher and better disciplined hitters out of Bradley and bogey after everything they have been through this year.

Couldn't they save a 40-man spot by placing Craig on the 60-day DL? (1) By all accounts, Craig will be back before the end of the season. (2) There is no 60-man DL during the offseason. All players formerly on the 60-man DL revert to the 40-man roster.

Great approach at the plate. I remember the 2012 reports said there was a lot of hit or miss to his swing. I thought 2013 wiped that out but he is looking lost now.

Looking forward to more of that from Cespedes, wherever he ends up playing in the OF. His presence out there just turned a double into a single.
