Yes, he's a useful piece, but I don't think he's $4.8m useful. That's in the top 30 cornerback cap hits in the league, ahead of guys like Antonio Cromartie and Walter Thurmond. That's too much to pay for what you readily admit is more of a matchup chess piece than a clear-cut starter. Lets see where that Cap hit ranks by the end of this offseason... Top 30, of which rookie deals will not be apart of in most cases, really isn't out of bounds for such an advantage. Cornerbacks are trending upwards. Cap numbers are also misleading in a lot of ways. Yea it's ahead of a guy like Chris Harris in 2015, but Harris has his number jump to over 9m the following year. Is Harris way better? For sure, but it's not like the Browner contract is more expensive than the Harris one although that's how the 2015 cap hit makes it look. Cromartie is a free agent so you have to see what his contract is first. And Cromartie signed last year for so cheap because he was coming off a bad year and a hip injury. Even if he didn't realy miss time due to the injury it was a big concern and his play was off as a result. Thurmond is also a free agent and is coming off an injury this year. Revis was the biggest factor in turning that secondary around, but Browner was also a big part of it. They should be able to work with the number. If they needed to cut someone to save money, then I'd cut Arrington way before I'd cut Browner because you have in house replacements for what Arrington does. Browner gets paid a premium because of how unique he is. if you want that dimension there is only one of him. Personally, I want it.

Of course all they need to do to make me happy is to resign Revis... They can cut anyone they want within reason to make that happen. If Browner needs to go, see ya.

Browner gets paid a premium because of how unique he is. if you want that dimension there is only one of him. Personally, I want it. I used AAV cap hits and directly compared him to two guys (Cromartie and Thurmond) who were free agents last year and signed one-year deals, since those would be most similar to Browner's situation. And it's not like Browner doesn't have injury and suspension issues of his own. There's a reason the Patriots are letting Browner explore free agency options on his own instead of trying to shop him themselves as a trade option-- because he's overpaid, even if it's not by much. Cutting Arrington opens up much less cap space (just $1.4m if pre-June 1st, $3m if post-June 1st). Arrington is also a key contributor on special teams.

In other news, Vereen to sign with the Giants. The Patriots have been connected to Roy Helu, who I think is very underrated and I would love. He'd cost them a compensatory pick, though, which means I also wouldn't mind Reggie Bush.

Albert Breer ?@albertbreer 54s55 seconds ago Per source, Brandon Browner won't take a paycut to stay in New England. So they either exercise his option as it stands, or cut him by 4 ET.

He's a north/south guy who can also catch the ball well.

Not Patriots related, but Patrick Willis is one of my favorite players ever and I'm sad to see him retire. It's rare to see linebackers who are both such great playmakers but are also so disciplined. The 49ers were pretty bad when they first drafted him and he put up insane numbers, especially in total tackles. But as they added talent around him, Willis was a huge reason players like Aldon Smith got to make big plays. Willis would always be filling the right gap and would never overpursue. His eight-year career was basically a linebacker clinic.

Browner's option NOT getting picked up, according to sources. He's now a free agent.
Also, Schefter is saying that NE feels that Revis is going back to Jets. Ugh.

So a year after bringing in Revis and Browner and winning the Super Bowl they might lose both. That's so dumb and inexcusable.

The NFL has gone nuts.
LeSean McCoy for Kiko Alonso. Jimmy Graham for Max Unger. Nick Foles for Sam Bradford.
At least the Ravens and Lions are still doing business the old way - Ngata for picks.
(Also, Sam Bradford? Really?!?)

Yeah, also the Seahawks are going 3 years without a 1st round pick... Harvin, trade down (Bridgewater) and now Graham (they get a 4th back).
Anyway, Shane Vereen to Giants for 3y/$12.35m.

Unlike Wilfork and Browner, Amendola doesn't have an option bonus that establishes a deadline for his release, so that one is a TBD for the moment. I think he restructures or gets cut at some point this offseason, though.

Four teams in on Revis are the Pats, Steelers, Jets, and the mystery team.

@benvolin: I’m told Revis wants $40 mil guaranteed over 3 years and the #Patriots balked at the full guarantee
If true that's absurd they won't pay him

Adam Schefter ?@adamschefter 31s31 seconds ago Well, this is interesting: Bills also expressing interest in free-agent CB Darrelle Revis, per sources. Rex does love his CBs...
He's gone. We're back to the good ol Ellis Hobbs LCB days.

Interesting fact. Pats have never won a SB without an all-pro at safety and corner.
