SB now over so I thought it'd be a good time to turn to the Offseason. Besides, there is potential a BIG piece of news.
According to reports (Mike Reiss, for one), Patriots are in discussions to bring back Dante Scarnecchia to coach the OL. Huge!

Just thinking that they could bring him back for one year and have him train an assistant to take over the next. Pay him whatever he wants. On the other hand, Carolina's O Line looked even worse than the Pats a couple of weeks ago. I noticed that the Pats scored more points than Carolina and gave up less. Even though Brady got hit about 25 times, he still almost beat Denver. That says a lot about him. Anyway, I've never seen a swarming defense like that. Even the Bears in '85 didn't do that. I think that the Pats have to concentrate on getting a couple of really good fast receivers to stretch out the field. Give Brady a little time, and they'll be fine.

It seemed Newton had a lot more time in general than Brady. Brady got hit so often, but was also getting rid of the ball so much quicker. The fast receivers wouldn't help the Pats much at all with how little time he had. They're a luxury for when your line can give the QB more than 1.5 seconds, which is pretty much a certainty unless everyone is hurt and you're playing the best defense in years.

Mayo was nothing less than a class act on and off the field. And during his healthy years he was a sure tackling field general. Thanks Jerod. Best of luck in your next venture.

Great team player, sad to see his career shortened by injuries. Fun fact: his first season was the last season of Bruschi and Vrabel (with the Pats at least). That core also featured Adalius Thomas and now I feel old.

I don't think Cam had any more time, they were all over him all game long. I think Cam being able to move around is what gave him more time, he created more time with his legs. In the pocket Denver harassed him just like they did Brady. Denver's D is scary good, lets just hope they can't keep it together.

Rumors have the Pats in on several RFA's that wouldn't require draft pick compensation if offers weren't matched including WR Chris Hogan, RB Benny Cunningham, and RB CJ Anderson. All seem like they'd be solid additions.

Anderson gets an offer from Miami. Hogan and Streater (UFA) possibly today.

Buffalo has already declined their right of first refusal. Hogan is a Patriot.

I see Hogan as a solid signing. A young guy that's already being called "7 11" cause he's open 24/7. Seems to have issues dropping the ball, but did have the second best yards per catch average on the team. Only Watkins was better. Have to think there's a good chance Brady could make him look a lot better, but he'll have to cut out the drops Brady hates that.
The surprise to me is that they took 1/3 of our cap room to do it this year. With the Bills cap problems, I don't think they match a 3 million cap hit this year, never mind a 5.5 million hit.

Patriots also signed DL Frank Kearse and, as expected, we're awarded 1 3rd and 3 6th rounders as compensation for losing FAs last year.

Any implications for Amendola with the Hogan signing?

I see no reason Hogan should have anything to do about Amendola. We need Amendola and him and Brady are really just starting to click. How to you ask Danny to take a pay cut when Hogan has a cap hit of 5.5 million this year.

Looking like bringing back Blount and then drafting a couple of running backs is the best way to upgrade the position. I don't think Blount is going to get that much money and he was having a very good year until he got injured. Still think out of all the injuries Blount's was the one that cost us a title(most people seem to think it was Lewis). We need to bring in 2-3 backs to add a good amount of depth.

I'm w/ you on keeping tabs on Blount...and a few others still on the market, a number of which would fit in their RB rotation - www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/running-back/There's also Tyler Gaffney, who they were able to IR, this past season. Not that they all hit, but a number of players that "come out of nowhere", have similarly taken a slower path to a roster spot - blog.masslive.com/patriots/2014/07/nfl_draft_2014_patriots_prospe.htmlHere's another, still rostered from last season's draft, at big area of need - TE - www.rotoworld.com/player/cfb/132027/aj-derbyOn the defensive side of the ball, Darryl Roberts made a good early impression. that I'm looking for him to build off, towards providing some depth at CB, especially with both Butler & Harmon coming duefor new deals. He's yet another under the radar player already rostered up, that could be the one that comes out of nowhere, next season - www.nfl.com/draft/2015/profiles/darryl-roberts?id=2553353www.patspulpit.com/2015/5/2/8537485/2015-nfl-draft-results-patriots-select-marshall-cb-darryl-roberts-in

Asking Amendola to take a paycut 2 years in a row could be a problem. It's going to happen but its anyones guess how he will react.

Pats just traded Chandler Jones to Arizona for Jonathan Cooper (OG) and a 2nd round pick. Damn.

Preliminary reaction: real nice haul for a player who was likely to leave next offseason anyways and who I always thought was a little overrated.

Belichick seems always more willing to move on a little too early than wait a little too late. Pats now have back to back picks in round 2, 60 and 61. They now have 2 2nds, 2 3rds, 1 4th, 3 6ths, 2 7ths.

In fact, I think he's still a little underrated. He's a great player who will be missed, but this is truly a great haul all things considered.

The big question is: would you rather have Jon Cooper for a year, some cap space, and a 2015 2nd rounder or Chandler Jones for a year and a 2016 3rd rounder from compensation?
