Little end goes with the little number and big end with the big one.
E.g. the length of this conversation > necessary.

Michael Lananna @mlananna Asked Bobby Dalbec if he's going to miss pitching when he goes to pro ball (4th round, #RedSox). Told me, flatly: "I don't like pitching."

Per Mayo on Twitter: Alan Marrero gets 160K from redsox in 8th rd (pick 238 value=$180,300). VG defensive catcher from PR HS ranks @mlbdraft

Can we just take a second and enjoy that we have a bunch of smart people on this site perhaps with advanced degrees who frequently discuss relatively advanced baseball stats and we spent a good chunk of posts discussing greater than vs. less than?

I "think" the sox want him for his bat and view pitching as a backup plan. I don't know if it was ever confirmed, but I thought I heard somewhere in one of these threads that he had his swing tampered with and that could be causing the horrendous contact rates. Let's tinker with him in a professional way and give him a chance to get used to his new swing and see what we have? After that, if it doesn't work out, I'm sure he'll try pitching and like it if it means he may get a major league career out of it.

Bet he likes it better around June 2018 when the alternative is getting released. Or as his coach said: “An athlete—that’s what he is, in terms of competitiveness, in terms of heart, in terms of discipline,” Johnson said. “And he just happens to be able to get the ball up there at 93 mph with a changeup that’s a major league ready pitch right now and a breaking ball that’s making some of the best hitters in college baseball look bad. “So I think if he keeps doing that, he might like (pitching) a little bit more.”

Don't understand that one at all. What don't you understand? I think what he doesn't understand is the projection was 50k and this is significantly more.

Vince Arobio wants 175K. He was supposed to pitch on the Cape this summer so the Sox could watch him. He went: and then left the team. He just surfaced in Lodi, CA in the Great West League.

Here is Take #3 of my projections for the 2016 signing season. Disclaimer disclaimer, yada yada yada. Signed2 CJ Chatham $1,100,000 6 Steve Nogosek $250,000 7 Ryan Scott $10,000 8 Alan Marrero Unknown, projected @ $50,000 9 Matt McLean $10,000 Top Ten Rounds (entire amount counts towards bonus cap)Round, Player, Projected Bonus1 Jason Groome $4,200,000 3 Shaun Anderson $500,000 4 Bobby Dalbec $400,000 5 Mike Shawaryn $600,000 10 Santiago Espinal $50,000 After 10th round, above $100K (first $100,000 does not count towards bonus cap)11 Nick Quintana $250,000 ($150,000 against cap) Total spent towards cap using these projections: $7,320,000 Red Sox Cap: $6,997,400 Red Sox Cap +5%: (no draft pick penalty): $7,347,270 So, Marrero added $110K to this, putting us about $85K short. Where might that be recovered? You could see Anderson signing for $450K or less, and if they could get that down to $410, the above works again. But I could much more easily see them not signing Quintana. That projection is 190 slot money for a guy who was ranked 114, 107, 65 by BA, MLB, PG and has a commitment to Arizona. I just don't know why he would sign for that. I think he was in part the fallback plan if they don't sign Groome; instead of going $1M over slot for Groome, they spend $500K of that (or more) on a Quintana deal at $600K+ and then use the rest to pick off a few of the guys drafted 29 to 38. Now, if they can sign Anderson for $400K and Groome for $4.0M, then Quintana is marginally in play again (he'd fit at $465), and that's the other reason they picked him.

I know the initial excitement and expectation in here was the Sox had a real good chance of signing Quintana because they drafted him so high. But it makes just as much sense that you'd draft your back up there. If you have a guy you really like, and you want to make a run at him if you lose out on Groome don't you kind of have to take him in the 11th??? instead of taking the risk that he falls elsewhere.

To the best of my knowledge, the sox have always had a price they feel each player is worth. If they'll sign for that, then they sign them. If they won't sign for that, then they won't sign them and probably won't draft them in certain rounds. I don't see them losing out on one guy and throwing the money at somebody who doesn't deserve it, in their opinion.
The only "back up plans" I've seen the sox employ is drafting multiple later round guys who could come down to their range. The first to come down, if any, are the ones who sign. This puts the leverage in our favor slightly as if you really want to sign, you better hurry up before the opportunity to do so is gone. Throwing money into an investment that doesn't warrant it is bad business.

I'm also bearish on them signing both Groome and Quintana. The math is increasingly difficult, unless you think Groome signs for not that much more than slot (which I don't think is likely, if only because Groome's agent will want to protect his credibility).

So what do you guys think of Matt Gorst signing? With us looking to save money I'm surprised he got 115,000. In grand scheme of things shows they like him and it's only 15,000. I do like idea of a young pitcher with great control that throws strikes.
