If the Sox fail to sign Groome (or even if they do), do they have a tampering claim against SD or whichever team allegedly had a wink and a nod agreement at $5M-$6M? No other sport would allow that level of negotiating with a potential draftee. I understand that the MLB system is different, but do they allow this type of interaction? I can see calling possible upcoming pick candidates and saying "What's your number" but that's about it. Perhaps they could ask if he'd sign for slot, but even that could screw a team that picks ahead of them hoping to sign him under slot (e.g. the team with the 12th pick is about to select and wants to know if the kid would sign for $500K under, a figure he might have accepted had the 13th team not called minutes before and asked if he'd accept slot). Under no circumstances should a team be able to call a player and say, "tell everyone you want $5M because they won't be able to pay it but we can at the 24th pick." Can't see how it's called tampering if he's not the property of any team. Does seem somewhat shady though. It's tampering because they held talks that damaged Boston's negotiations with its draft pick. Yes, he hadn't been drafted yet, but Boston, and others, held priority rights and until SD (or whoever it was) got to their pick they should not in any way act to harm those rights. It's really not much different in terms of impact on Boston than if they called up Groome today and said, "Don't sign with the Red Sox, go to JC, and we'll pick you next year for a $5M contract." He's thinking, "Someone else thinks I'm worth $5M, why should I sign for less?"

Of the 30 unsigned players in the top ten rounds (per MLB signings tracker), five belong the Sox. Well, two were playing in the CWS, two want overslot deals, and one has posted a picture of himself in Fort Myers with his hand wrapped heavily on Instagram. With the CWS done, the dominoes will start to fall now. (Not implying that you thought different, btw)

This time it is not convenient, because it's the Red Sox getting screwed. Every single team does this with the draft, just like every single team makes package deals with trainers for international free agents.

Buddy, Groom is not the problem. Indirectly, he could be. I can picture the Sox trying extra hard to use having to sign him as leverage to beat down other guys while "hopefully" working on a deal to sue those davings on a post 11 pick. i think we pretty much know that whatever's left after we sign our guys is going to get offered to Groome and he's going to take it.

It's of more of testament as to how quickly other teams wrapped up their entire draft.

After the Sox drafted Chatham, a few people said they were curious what kind of bonus Nolan Jones would get. He got $2.25 million, more than a million over slot. linkSo there was no way the Sox were every signing Groome and Jones.

The math for both Groome and Quintana gets increasingly difficult.

The math for both Groome and Quintana gets increasingly difficult. Yup, that was kind of the last chance to save a significant chunk of change...

Anderson signing for slot is disappointing. Another Maddox throwaway pick non-bargain. No chance Quintana signs barring a Groome disaster.

I wrote off Quintana once I had Shawaryn signing for 600k. Players around Anderson for the most part were signing for slot. Sadly we couldn't save 200k for Quintana and try signing him for 300k. A 10k sign instead of Nogosek would of been my preference.

Yeah it looks like Groome would have to turn down 4 million or very close to it.

I think they should try to subvert the rules and just give everyone $300K and slide the rest of the cash under the table. Seems foolproof, really.

You're replacing Hazen. The press conference is at 1 PM tomorrow right after the staged hug photo shoot with David Ortiz.

Wow Anderson sure looked like a $500,000 signing. I still can not wrap my head around this. Do the sox see something in Anderson that the rest of the baseball world is not seeing?
