Chad Hardy is actually listed as a catcher. Could that be accurate? It's a mistake, per Ian Cundall on Twitter

Am used to being ridiculed on this board, yet as a long time Sox fan keep coming back. Was bang on with Marrero when some of same people were harping his merits.. Same with Brian Johnson. Tate Matheny believe is another illusion. Dalbec? Please.
I enjoy this site, but the blind faith in what the front office does? That goes too far.

I don't think anyone is saying they have a ton of faith in Dalbec amounting to anything. In fact, I think most posters that are in disagreement with you are admitting his chances of a major league career are quite slim. You're missing the larger points though: A) its a 4th round pick not a 1st or even 2nd, B) a good draft process probably involves a blend of relatively low-ceiling, higher-floor types (think solid reliever profiles like Nogosek), and also high-ceiling, low-floor types like Dalbec. So basically, those in favor of the Dalbec pick (myself included), don't mind that type of gamble when there is a 70 grade power tool attached to it. The fact that he has a chance to make the majors as a reliever is an added bonus and also needs to factor into the evaluation of his 'floor.'

I think most posters recognize that these are all lottery tickets. As Ram said, they are a mix of low ceiling/high floors and high ceiling/low floors risks. There is an art to balancing a draft class. I would like to think that the BoSox scouting group has earned some credit with their track record overall. From the beginning, this year's draft was GROOME and the rest. Let's get GROOME signed, and figure out if any of other signees turn into good lotto tickets.
Re: Dalbec specifically, IIRC he showed + power in last summer's Cape league. Read that the Arizona coaches tinkered with his swing some. Yes, he is a big swing and miss guy. But what if someone on the BoSox (Chili Davis?) is his swing whisperer? Maybe Dalbec is the Joey Gallo monster thumper we've coveted. And if he can't hit, he's got an arm. For a fourth rd pick, lets let Dalbec/Malbec breathe a bit before we pass judgement on him.

Brian Johnson has been pretty damn good and could have been an important cog in this year's rotation with all the trouble they've been having with #4/#5 starters - which he is especially made for, except for the car-jacking at gunpoint which created anxiety issues (maybe getting hit in the head with line drive factored into that, too?). I'm sure you foresaw all that, though, which makes your insights even more incredible. If you're going to toot your own horn, at least know what you're talking about. So, likely right on Marerro, likely wrong on Johnson. Metheny is still up in the air, but pretty much everyone hated that pick anyway. And most people didn't like the Dalbec pick either. But you're Nostradamus?

When I made my post on the last page I typed Dalbec -- I know it. Gol' durn spellcheck must have changed it to Malbec in the translation.
But I'm not going to w[h]ine about it.
I like the Dalbec pick if only for the 2-fer. He may not like pitching now, but if he falls on his face as a hitter and can see the possibility of $2M + paychecks out of the bullpen I bet he'd take a shot on the mound.

But seriously, Johnson has been a pleasant surprise Also, I'm not sure the names he mentioned are like the Daibec pick. Everybody he mentioned were considered "safe" in some way as they have something that gives them a high floor. Daibec's floor is quite low, just like his ceiling is quite high. The people who hated those picks should be loving this one. As Amfox( ) said, he was a fringe first rounder before the season started. Sorry if I'm wrong about who said that or who it wasa about.

Blind faith on who the front office drafts in the 4th round when they can't sign anyone over slot? Not sure what you're expecting out of a 4th round pick in that situation. I think it's probably a little too much. Dalbec is a lottery ticket similar in value to the Mega Millions tickets that I wasted money on. I'm not really expecting anything and I doubt anyone else is either. Your post tried to cram as many strawmen arguments as possible into a few sentences.

I'm pretty sure people here universally hated the Matheny pick. He's a fourth outfielder at best and has been treated like it pretty much by everyone.

The Matheny pick was and is a meh sandwich. But if he were the become a moderately useful bench player in the majors that's not a bust for where he was selected.

I get everyone's point in that, it's giving 4-5th OF's 500k. More likely another organizational player, or someone that can be found on the waiver wire at most anytime during the season. Like to see them attempt guys with high ceiling, if are long shots. Organizational guys they have and always will. Don't be afraid to end up with another Myles Smith, or Madison Younginer. Sometimes the high ceiling and low floor guys are much better than those safe picks and those organizational guys are always around looking for milb deals every year.

I get all that, but an organization should try to balance its portfolio of prospects. The high miss rates inherent to the "lottery pick" style draft selections could lead to big gaps in the tranches of talent in the system if you ignored relatively high floor but moderate ceiling picks.

Interesting. Nick Quintana at Fenway tonight, via Abraham tweet. Lets hope we have anything to offer him beyond 100k. Recall we brought in Ryan Boldt to Fenway as well and it didn't amount to anything. I'm a really big Quintana fan....from what I can tell, he seems to have legit power and seems to really love the game/play hard.

If they are eventually going to make him an offer, he's got to have taken the physical. Doesn't mean that he's there to negotiate. They may also just be playing "getting to know you" in case they want to re-draft him down the road. Might as well take advantage.

I still put the odds of him signing with us at <5% (hey, I did that right). As was stated above, they bring in guys to meet them and let them attend a game. Maybe one of them will fall in love with us enough to change their mind? I wouldn't hold your breath I think I've heard around 300K as an estimate on him. Not sure how eralistic that is as far as him accepting it, never mind prying that money away from Groome.

Jonathan Mayo @jonathanmayo ICYMI, redsox signed 10th-rder Santiago Espinal. Bonus was $50K (Pick 298 value=$157,200). Assuming this report is true, at this moment I calculate that the Sox have about $982,000 of "over slot" money available. That would be enough to pay Dalbec slot, Shawaryn $500,000, and leave Groome with a bonus of about $4,050,000. If Shawaryn were to sign for slot, that would save about $125,000, which could be given to Groome, or the Sox could give $4,000,000 to Groome and have about $175,000 over slot to throw at Quintana or some other player(s) after round 10. That seems to be what we're looking at going into the last 6 days.
