This is one game where I question the accuracy of the various FIP models as tools to evaluate the pitcher's performance. When a pitcher gives up several runs on bloops and grounders, then yeah, it's fair to say that he's probably pitching better than his results. That was not this. These hits were crushed all over the park - or out of it. His ERA was 49 something. There is no stat that doesn't break when you give up 9 runs in less than 2 innings. Granted. I realize that. I'm just saying that the "he got unlucky" argument becomes irrelevant at some point when you get hit that hard. Yeah, luck wasn't on his side. He still sucked, and FIP misses that. Anyway, I've said my piece.

It's not meant to prove that he pitched great. It's meant to show how he probably wouldn't give up 49 runs if he pitched the entire game. And I would agree, if it actually said that. What it says is that he should give up 1.5 runs if he pitches an entire game at that level of performance, which IMO is silly. I would never say that xFIP determines anything in one game other than when it's so drastically different like that, he was a little unlucky. Because no matter how bad you're pitching, you don't give up 7 hits in 9 balls in play. I bet the batting practice pitcher would have a better BABIP than that. Pitching badly and bad luck are not an either/or situation. It can be both.

Benintendi and Leon reinforcing their two weakest positions has done a lot in terms of strengthening this team. Pushing Holt to the bench also makes it a lot easier to give slumping guys (Xander) a day off. Agreed, and if they bring Moncada up to play 3B, ridiculous conjecture as it may seem, it would help even more.

The bench right now is Haladay, Hill and Holt. And Chris Young is on the mend. I doubt they send Shaw down for Moncada.

I doubt they send Shaw down for Moncada. Shaw is looking terrible in August, I wouldn't be surprised if he is either injured or worn out. It is his first full season in the MLB and those look exhausting, so I wouldn't oppose giving him a breather.

Amazing.
Mookie's power is like if deepjohn's Kopech predictions actually came true.

At this rate, Mookie should have 2-3 more chances at a 4th HR.

Ok, time to take Betts out before they start throwing at his head. (Hopefully they are a bit classier than Baltimore)

My goodness. The lineup with Mookie, JBJ, Xander, Benintendi, Moncada, and Devers as the 1-6 in some order is going to be unstoppable.
Also, as a frequent Farrell critic, I have to give him credit for moving Mookie to 3rd in the order. Very smart move.

I just doubt Moncada comes up before then.

I thought Mookie could be a 30/30 guy down the road. He may well do it this year. Update, he may do it this month.

Another Hanley double that'd be a home run in any other ballpark.
This is fun, huh?
