Who needs Big tiket free agents (Encarnacion etc) when your farm system develop superstars? We need more small ticket FA like Ortiz. Or small ticket acquisitions like Sandy Leon.

Porcello's had a lot of long innings to wait through, and it's a hot August day. I know Porcello is good for seven or eight innings, but I'd like him to get pulled after six and Elias put in to finish it out.

I was not aware that a pitcher could have a negative game score. Greinke with a -12 today. Porcello cruising with 61 pitches through 5.

Since we were talking Greinke's xFIP earlier, thought it would be fun to do a similar exercise for Mookie Betts through 4 ABs:
1.000/1.000/3.250 (4.250 OPS), 1.734 wOBA, 1066 wRC+, 2.250 ISOp

69 pitches, 52 strikes for Porcello. That is ridiculous.

I'd like to truly, and personally apologize to Rick Porcello. I know he had a bad year last year, but this is the first true year of his $20 million dollar extension and he has truly been the ace we needed.
Way to go dude.

Things that amaze...
I just heard a commercial for Donelands Supermarket. They must have grown, when I was a kid, there were 2 stores, Littleton (original) and Acton.

I'm about to be 11-4 on games this year and this is definitely one of the most fun games ive been to. Top 2 along with one of the Yankee games I went to.

Some Mookie stats “@jlundbladespn: Mookie Betts is the youngest player with 3 HR & 8+ RBI in a game since Fred Lynn in 1975 (also for the Red Sox)” “@timbritton: Betts joins Michael Saunders as the only major-leaguers with 8 RBIs in a game this year. Last Red Sox with 8+ in a game: Bill Mueller, 2003.” “@ianmbrowne: The only other redsox player to have two three-homer games in the same season? Ted Williams, in 1957.”

Jeremy Lundblad @jlundbladespn 24m24 minutes ago Mookie Betts is the youngest player in MLB history with multiple 3-HR games in a season Out of the 20 players who have done it a total of 21 times (Johnny Mize did it twice, the first time twice on the same homestand). Only 19 players in MLB history have had 3 HR, 4 H, 4 R, and 8 RBI in a game. Amazingly, this is the 5th time it's been done by the Sox: Ted had the identical line on 7/14/06. And they needed it, beating tyhe Indians 11-10. Bobby Doerr went 4/6, BB, 4 R, 8 RBI on 6/80/50. Sox beat the Browns 29-4. Norm Zauchin went 4/5, 2B, 4 R, 10 RBI on 5/27/55. And of course Fred Lynn went 5/6, 3B, 4 R, 10 RBI in Detroit on 6/18/75. Those are probably the only four better games in Sox history, if you value HR and RBI. And in fact no one has matched the 13 TB, 4 R, 8 RBI without hitting 3 HR. Two more contenders: Dustin Pedroia's 5/5, 2B, 3 HR, BB game against the Rockies on 6/24/10, just before he got hurt. 4 R and only 5 HR, but the HRs were dramatic. It's the 2nd highest game in WPA (after Ted's) with 13 TB, 4 R, 4 RBI. And JBJ last year in Seattle, 5/6, 3 2B, 2 HR, 5 R, 7 RBI. Only player so far to be have been involved in 12 different runs. And now it looks like Mookie will get another PA ...

Unless Holt lines into a DP, Mookie will get another shot.

I'm surprised they don't walk him after playing the infield in.

It's still bizarre to me that Holt was batting 2nd and Benintendi 9th. But what a day for Pedroia and Mookie. And yet another outstanding start by Porcello. I guess the "Would YOU trust Porcello as your #3 in the playoffs??!!" noise has quieted a little.

I wonder if it could have anything to do with the fact that Holt has hit second before and Benintendi has not?
Seriously, we're talking about a manager who watched his leadoff hitter slug .544* through August 9th, knocking in just 14 R on his last 12 HR's, before finally deciding he should bat 3rd or 4th. The 2 HR today with multiple men on matched the number in his previous 17 HR's. *Now .561.

Per Scott Lauber, Wright to the DL retroactive to Monday, which means Buchholz gets the start Thursday. Elias optioned. Presumably Hembree gets recalled and Young activated.

Seems like when the bottom third of the lineup produces good things happen.
When the bottom third gets going for multiple games, it seems to ignite the top of the lineup.
