The reports say Glennon turned down more than 7 million. If I had to guess I say he gets 10-12 million a year from Bears. It won't be a horrible deal if they limit the guaranteed money. It does take away another bidder though. Still think Jimmy gets traded for 2 second round picks. We don't have to trade him so even if the field of teams dwindles who wants him, if 1 team wants him enough it doesn't matter if the Bears, etc, drop out of it.

According to Ian Rappaport, the Pats are trading for Dwayne Allen TE Indianapolis
EDIT: But don't take Michael's estranged brother's word for it. Ian Rapoport is tweeting it to. (DOH!)

Allen for a 5th rd pick is a big time move.

It's a 4th and they get a 6th back, technically.

This Allen deal is classic BB. Fill a need affordably with a veteran in his prime.

I hope Dalvin Cook falls because teams fall into his supposed poor combine... guy is a beast

RBs usually drop on draft day, so it could happen.
I'm sure this will change the more prospects I look at, but right now Evan Engram has caught my eye. I know we just got Allen, but he's more of a blocking TE. With Gronk injuries we could use another very good pass catching TE.
Engram sounds a lot like Hernandez, without the baggage. More of a receiver than Blocker. 6'3'' 234 ran a 4.42 40 and has a 36 inch vertical. He put up big numbers for Ole Miss.

With those combine numbers some team is going to get excited and reach for Engram, my guess is he will probably be gone before the Pats would value him worthy of a pick. Another reason to trade JG this year is the draft is supposedly deep with all the positions the Pats have needs. Edge guys, secondary, big backs and TE. I would think that would come into the thinking.

Tight end is no longer a need. Allen is 26, but that doesn't mean they won't take one. A pass catcher would be fine, but part of what makes the dual threat they have now is the blocking and receiving ability of both. They get to go big and run it down the defense throat if they stay smaller or spread them out if they go big. We didn't get to see it a lot last year due to Gronks injury.

I'm at the early stages of looking up draft prospects.. I will focus first on linebackers... they need line-backing help even if 54 resigns and if he doesn't they they are in a world of hurt. The first guys on my radar is Jarrad Davis from Florida and Haasan Reddick from Temple. I really think they will target an inside guy earlier. Hightower has injuries, is flexible to move and they need another young guy potential starter in that spot.
I love the cornerback class but looking around the league at the success rate of first rd corners and the plethora of late round and undrafted guys, it worries me to take a corner so high.

My early dark horse - "what are they thinking?" pick for the Pats in the first rd is Forrest Lamp OL from Western Kentucky. He's a left tack in college but can play guard and some think center as well. In theory, the Pats offensive line is both all-set and good. Solder is a good (not great) left tackle in his early Prime. Thuney needs to be better at left guard but he had a very promising rookie year and big improvement is expected. Andrews is a 2 year starter at center and is a smart player which is important for a center. Mason, was a top 5 right guard the second half of the year. In short he looks like a stud for years to come. Cannon, was an all-pro RT from week 2 on and has a nice extension.
So what's the reason? Depth, insurance and the potential to replace the weak link on the line. Solder is in the final year of his deal and has battled a lot of injuries. Having a true starting caliber tackle to back him up is very valuable. We've seen how disastrous it can be without him. Also protects against not getting an extension done. If Thuney doesn't progress, you have a strong replacement for him. Obviously, I'd work him out first but if he can snap or shows the ability to learn well and the intelligence to play center then upgrading Andrews is a huge net gain. He's clearly the weak link and it can be really ugly at times. We cannot let teams move their best pass rushers inside next year and abuse us like Houston did and Atlanta did a little. The right side of the line is set and dominant.
It's not a prediction just strikes me as something BB might do. Depending on the draft board value.

Patriots current draft picks:
1 - 32 2 - 64 3 - 96 3 - 103 5 - 163 5 - 183 6 - 200 7 - 239
A couple things of note. The trade of Allen continues a Belichick trend of giving up a higher pick in order to get back a lower pick. He values the number of picks he has because it allows him to do his constant maneuvering.
He also hates having big gaps in his draft board so we can basically bank of him getting a 4th round pick at some point whether it's on draft day or before.

Wow. Schefter reporting Pats to sign Stephon Gilmore

On the draft, I agree that NE will take a TE at some point. It's such a deep draft at that position (especially if you're looking at pass catchers).

I love Logan Ryan but Gilmore is better... has injury issues in the past but young talented corner.
Of course my lasting memory of him is him pulling up and yelling at his safety instead of diving for Hogan to tackle him in a game this year but that's ok

I hope this isn't a sign they think Butler is gone after next year.... just saying....
Add: keep in mind you cannot franchise Garropolo and Butler.

Per Schefter, the number is over 14m per year.... my lord... Malcolm days here are numbered then.

For some reason I find it crazy that Gilmore is actually younger than Butler.

They do have the cap space, and Gilmore is a really good player who is still just 26 years old. The structure of a contract is also fairly important, especially a long-term one (Gilmore's deal is reportedly five years, per Schefter). Could be something like 5/$70M with $20M guaranteed over the first two years but all non-guaranteed money in the last three (with the team option structure that the Patriots like to use to rack up compensatory picks). But $14M a year is still a lot (the source for that number is Rapoport, not Schefter, by the way, and he describes it as the "expected price tag," which suggests that it's subject to change).

Butler was an old rookie, his path to the NFL is a great story. I'm sure Butlers age is partly the Patriots concern. He's a year older than Gilmore and a year out from free agency so they could look at him as 2 years older and do they want to pay a 28 year old corner bigger money than they can pay a 26 year old corner. I say bigger because next year the number may be 15-16. So now you get a year of them both and have your in house replacement if Butler leaves. Layering their number 1s...
I love Malcolm tho and think he's a perfect player for the team with his grit and work ethic... I don't know enough about Gilmore on that end. As a fan, I hope Butler is here a long time too.

I told myself after the Super Bowl that I will not question what this team does for the next couple years but if they lose Hightower I will be nervous. I'll believe in them but I'll feel better if he's resigned.
