Doubt it's an offer sheet. Most likely a trade (where NO would be able to give less than #11). Butler would have to sign the RFA tender and then get traded. He's not under contract at the moment. You're probably right that this is the most likely scenario. Time to draft another corner. I trust Bill, I think he'll find something there at the second corner position.

It is just a visit, could we be getting ahead of ourselves? A little?

He's unsigned and not pleased about it. Pats just committed serious money to another cornerback.
Not saying he's gone but I don't see how this is "getting ahead of ourselves" any more than ANY discussion prior to an actual transaction.

There are literally no "Patriots plan to keep Butler" reports out there. That's disconcerting.

There were no "Patriots plan on going after Gilmore" reports either. Pats just don't advertise their plans a lot. It's certainly possible they are letting other teams do the negotiating for them but that's a LOT of money invested in the CB position.
They can do it (and sign Hightower) but it's not their typical MO.

Volin suggest it will cost 32 + either 42 (2nd) or 76 (3rd) for NE to trade Butler.

Volin suggest it will cost 32 + either 42 (2nd) or 76 (3rd) for NE to trade Butler. So they want more than it cost to get Cooks who has two years of team control. As players I think Cooks and Butler are both top players at there positions. You have to get a lot for him, otherwise just keep him. He's going to play 100% because he's playing for a new contract. This was a big fear after getting Gilmore. Makes you wonder why they didn't bring back Ryan. He got paid a little more than he's worth, but it was only 3 years 30 million. Getting Gilmore and losing both Butler and Ryan is a big downgrade, not an upgrade. I don't know, maybe they have another Vet they will bring in or they use pick #32 to get a corner.

If you take Ryan out of the equation (did ANYONE think we were going into the draft with him in the fold):
Lose Butler Lose our 3rd Gain Cooks Gain Gilmore Gain 4th Gain NO 2nd or 3rd.
Ryan is a loss but not an unexpected one.

Ok maybe I am just having separation anxiety and I am trying to remain optimistic he comes back. That CB combination would go a long way towards another SB run. MB for less than 4 million for 1 year is a great deal, obviously!

Ryan is a loss but not an unexpected one. I never thought he would be back, but I also thought he would get more like 5 years 50 million. I also thought they would bring in a Vet to replace him, so Gilmore was awesome. The thing is Gilmore seems to have been brought in to replace Butler. I never thought in a million years both Butler and Ryan would be gone.

Oh, and I'm not suggesting I'm happy with the DB's as is (unless Butler DOES play under his tender).
More that I figured, at this point in the offseason, we'd have a starting CB (granted, Butler instead of Gilmore) and picks and abilty to sign a vet to compete with Rowe. That's where we would be(as long as you think Gilmore can replace Butler) if this scenario plays out as Volin suggests, and we'd have Cooks.

Field Yates just posted that the Pats signed Rex Burkhead, formerly w/ the Bengals. Saw him a bit at the end of this season, and he looks pretty talented - but pretty similar to what Lewis and White offer this offense.

Lead Cincy in ST tackles. Brandon Bolden likely gone. Still may see a big back.

If Hightower leaves we could look at Zach Brown, Kevin Minter, or Manti Te'o.
If Butler leaves we could look at Morris Claiborne, Alterraun Verner, Darrelle Revis, Brandon Carr, and Sterling Moore.
We could also look at DE like Connor Barwin, Devin Taylor, and Mario Williams.

He shouldn't be signed as anything more than a camp invite type contract that you can cut if he's not good or healthy...
A torn Achilles is no joke and he wasn't that great his rookie year.
Not saying I wouldn't take a flyer but he shouldn't be relied on.

Well most of the players I listed are that type of player. You add them for depth, but they might not even make team like Knighton last year. The Patriots usually add a bunch of those type of players each year.

After reading his scouting report I like the move if he replaces Bolden. He seems to run with more power than White and Lewis. It's a nice little upgrade over Bolden who is not the runner he was years ago.

I'd like to see the contract but considering what the Pats pay for backs i am sure it's not much in which case I do really like the signing as well.

Jets have biggest offer to Hightower. Hopefully Hightower isn't looking for the biggest contract out there.

Hightower has done his due diligence to try and maximize his next deal, today is the day he resigns with Pats IMO.

It looks like, still waiting for official contract details, Burkheads deal is 1 year 3.15m. He supposedly left more money on the table elsewhere but it's still a pretty large 1 year deal for a Patriots RB...
I highly doubt he's simply a Bolden replacement. You don't pay special teams guys that money. It makes me wonder if they will sign another running back. Burkhead makes sense in the Blount role that can double as a receiving option which makes the team very dangerous. Now when they are jumbo with Gronk, Allen, Devlin and Burkhead plus Cook out wide, you can now audible out and spread that formation... if a team goes big, good luck having the bodies to stop Gronk and Cooks going deep...
